Gravesen exits Celtic

GLASGOW (AFP) – Scottish champions Celtic confirmed Monday they are parting company with Danish midfielder Thomas Gravesen.
“Celtic Football Club, Thomas Gravesen and Thomas’s representatives have agreed that he will part company with the club,” the club said in a statement.
“Thomas wishes Celtic every success and, likewise, the club wishes Thomas all the very best for the future.”
The 32-year-old signed from Real Madrid in August 2006 but was unable to establish himself in the first team at Celtic.
He returned to former club Everton on loan last season but failed to win a permanent move to Goodison.
Gravesen was given a surprise start in a pre-season friendly against Manchester City but was not involved in either SPL game against St Mirren and Dundee United.

Brazil crush Germany to make Olympic final
August 18, 2008
SHANGHAI (AFP) – Brazil came from a goal down to stun Germany 4-1 Monday and book a place in the women’s Olympic decider, avenging their painful defeat to the European powerhouse in last year’s World Cup final.
Formiga, Marta and a Cristiane brace did the damage, cancelling out a Birgit Prinz strike to set up a gold medal match against either defending champions the United States or Japan in Beijing on Thursday.
Prinz got the opener on 10 minutes, making the breakthrough after a nervy start by both sides.
As she so often has in the past, the German captain used her brute strength to muscle her way past a defender and into the box before calmly rounding goalkeeper Barbara and side footing home.
Rattled, Brazil looked to their three most creative players – Cristiane, Marta and Daniela — for inspiration and they duly delivered.
Daniela was proving a handful down the left and it was from her efforts that the South Americans almost got an equaliser with five minutes left in the half.
Her deep cross dropped at the feet of defender Simone only for Germany’s Kerstin Garefrekes to make a crucial tackle and put the ball behind for a corner.
The near-miss sparked Brazil into life and three minutes later they were level after Cristiane sent a low cross into the box to the advancing Formiga who smashed the ball into the net from 20 yards.
It panicked the world champions who let their guard down again barely a minute later, allowing Marta to strike a long-range effort that goalkeeper Nadine Angerer did well to tip over the bar.
Brazil came out after the break just as determined and were ahead within four minutes after Marta picked up the ball just inside her own half and went rampaging down the middle of the park with Germany caught napping.
Drawing the defenders, she laid off the ball to Cristiane in acres of space and the 23-year-old made no mistake for her fourth goal of the tournament.
Brazil had another on 53 minutes when Marta rounded two defenders as she cut into the box on the right before burying the ball with the outside of her left boot.
Germany’s back line was at fault again for the fourth goal when Cristiane danced past three defenders before cooly placing the ball past the oncoming Angerer with 14 minutes left.
Brazil and Germany have been the nearly-women of Olympics football.
The Brazilians lost the Athens final in 2004 in extra time by 2-1 to the USA while Germany have won bronze in their last two Games; they defeated Brazil in the third-place play-off in Sydney in 2000.

McFadden not interested in Old Firm move
August 18, 2008
GLASGOW (AFP) – Scotland’s Birmingham striker James McFadden on Monday ruled out a move to either Old Firm club.
The 25-year-old former Motherwell player has been linked to both Celtic and Rangers in recent months after Birmingham were relegated to the Championship.
Speaking ahead of the friendly against Northern Ireland at Hampden on Wednesday, McFadden was reticent about his future at Birmingham but is not keen to move back to his homeland.
“To be perfectly honest I wouldn’t entertain a move to Glasgow,” he said.
“I’m happy to be playing outside Scotland at the minute, especially with the kind of press that’s been going about for Rangers and Celtic. I’m quite happy to be away from it.
“I read the papers and I watch the television and there has been some bad press for Rangers recently.
“I’m afraid that’s what you get at the two biggest teams, there is always stories to be written, whether they are good or bad.”
He added: “It’s hard to tell (if he will be at Birmingham when the transfer window closes) but at the minute I’m there unless I’m told otherwise.”

Woodgate misses England training
August 18, 2008
LONDON (AFP) – Jonathan Woodgate was the only absentee from England training ahead of Wednesday’s friendly with the Czech Republic.
The 28-year-old Tottenham defender is not a doubt for the Wembley encounter but was excused a formal session at Arsenal’s London Colney training ground on Monday because of his history of fitness problems.
The remainder of Fabio Capello’s 23-man squad were present, including 12 players who featured in Premier League on Sunday – Michael Carrick withdrawing after suffering an ankle injury during Manchester United’s draw with Newcastle.
Capello is still to name his captain for the game and the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Croatia which follow, although it is believed to be between centre-half duo Rio Ferdinand and John Terry.

Redknapp rules out Hammers return
August 18, 2008
LONDON (AFP) – Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp on Monday dismissed suggestions he is being lined up to return to West Ham.
Hammers boss Alan Curbishley remains under pressure despite a 2-1 win over Wigan at the weekend, while Redknapp is one of the favourites to be the first Premier League boss to lose his job this season.
Redknapp’s name has been strongly linked with a return to the club he previously managed and played for.
But the Pompey chief, who shunned a move to Newcastle last year, insists he has no intentions of quitting his side.
“I am not interested in going anywhere else,” he is quoted by the Daily Star. “I have had some offers before but I am happy where I
am.”
