Zola Vs The Don for Hammers job

September 10, 2008

First there were thirty, then there were four, and now readers, West Ham are down to just two. Or if you believe The Guardian, just one. Michael Laudrup skipped his interview with the West Ham board to go manage in Russia, while Slaven Bilic’s offer to run both the Croat national side as well as managing West Ham was not deemed good enough by the board. Which leaved former Italy manager Roberto Donadoni (experience) vs former Chelsea favourite Gianfranco Zola (attacking football). The Hammers are expected to plump for the latter.

It might seem odd that a player voted by London rivals Chelsea as thier greatest ever player would be ahead of The Don, who has club experience as well as international experience. But Zola is held in such high regard in England for his football, and his loveable personality, that we even allowed ourselves to forget that he scored against us back in 1997. But then, we got through anyway.

The Don also apparently underperformed in his interview. We’ve all been there Roberto. Didn’t have a shave before the interview or iron his tie perhaps. Maybe it was that annoying question about what you can bring to the team. Although that probably would be relevant in this instance. Maybe his references weren’t as good? I Don’t imagine The Don’s last employers would give a glowing reference.
