Estrada scores three, Guatemala beats China PR 10:1 at Futsal World Cup

BRASILIA, Brazil — Carlos Estrada scored three goals and led Guatemala to a 10:1 victory over China PR on Tuesday, leaving it to beat Argentina in its final group game to advance at the FIFA Futsal World Cup.

The victory was Guatemala’s second and gave it six points in Group C, one point behind Ukraine and Argentina after three matches each. Two teams from each of the four groups advance to the quarterfinals. Guatemala plays Argentina on Thursday.

Guatemala is the only team from CONCACAF remaining in contention for a berth in the second round. The USA lost all four of its first-round games and was eliminated along with Cuba, which lost its second on Monday. Cuba has one game remaining but no chance of advancing.

“We desperately wanted to win today,” Guatemala’s Carlos Merida said. “Now we can focus on the game against Argentina. It won’t be easy but our main aim is still to reach the next round.”

Erick Acevedo scored his third goal in as many games to give Guatemala the lead in the second minute and Daniel Tejada scored the eventual winner, and the first of his two in the game, less than two minutes later. Jose Gonzales scored the first of his two in the 10th minute to increase Guatemala’s lead to 3:0.

Luis Castro added to the lead in the 11th minute and Estrada scored his first 10 seconds later. Estrada and Tejada added goals to give Guatemala a 7:0 halftime lead, and Marlon Noj, Gonzalez and Estrada tacked on second-half goals to complete the rout.

Ukraine used an own-goal in the eight-minute to take the lead and went on to beat Egypt 5:1. In Tuesday’s other games, Iran defeated Uruguay 4:2 and the Czech Republic defeated Libya 4:2.
