USA eliminated from Futsal World Cup with 5:3 loss to Thailand

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – The USA was eliminated from the FIFA Futsal World Cup, surrendering two goals in as many minutes midway through the second half to fall to Thailand 5:3 on Saturday.

Lertchai Issarasuwipakorn and Panuwat Janta scored in consecutive minutes to give Thailand a 4:2 lead in the 30th minute and end the American chance to advance. The loss was the USA’s third in as many games.

Eakapong Suratsawang and Prasert Innui gave Thailand the lead late in the first half but Mike Apple and Denison Cabral replied for the USA to equalize by the 22nd minute.

After Sermphan Khmthinkaew increased Thailand’s lead in the 39th minute before the Pat Morris pulled the USA within two again.

In other games, three-time champion Brazil won its third straight, 7:0 over Russia; Japan handed the Solomon Islands its third loss, 7:2; and Italy defeated Portugal 3:1.

CONCACAF still has two teams with hopes of advancing, Cuba and confederation champ Guatemala, both of which have split their opening games.

Cuba next faces Japan on Monday while Guatemala plays China on Tuesday.
