Real´s Diarra out for two to three weeks

November 10, 2008

MADRID (AFP) – Real Madrid’s Mali international Mahamadou Diarra will be out of action for two to three weeks with a thigh injury, the club said on Monday.

The midfielder was injured in Real’s 4-3 Primera Liga victory over Malaga on Saturday.

He joins Spaniard Ruben de la Red and Dutchmen Arjen Robben, who will be out for up to six weeks after suffering a leg muscle tear, and Ruud van Nistelrooy, who may undergo knee surgery, on the injury list.

Real Madrid, currently fourth in the league, two points behind leaders Barcelona, face third division Real Union at home in the second leg of the last 32 of the Spanish Cup on Tuesday. The Spanish champions lost the first leg 3-2.

Hughes backed by City chairman

November 10, 2008

MANCHESTER (AFP) – Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has been told he is held in the "highest regard" by the Premier League club’s Abu Dhabi owners on Monday.

Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak expressed his confidence in Hughes before the 2-1 home defeat by Tottenham on Sunday – a result that meant City had won just one of their last seven league games and were now just one point above the relegation zone.

But Al Mubarak, who saw that match, insisted suggestions former Wales and Blackburn boss Hughes’s position was under threat were ridiculous.

"We are calm and under control and we on the board have the highest regard for Mark," he told the club’s website, mcfc.co.uk, on Monday.

"I am personally committed to him as I am committed to the partnership between executive chairman Garry Cook, Mark and myself.

"This is a winning team that is going through a learning curve right now.

"Thankfully I do not read the newspapers that are saying he is under pressure but I find it incredible.

"I am told that there are reports that we are associated with two different coaches and that we are about to sign them. It is rubbish."

Hughes, speaking after Suday’s loss, said: "The chairman, Khaldoon al-Mubarak, was over at my house last night and we had a great meeting.

Al Mubarak also said Monday that he and the Abu Dhabi United Group were committed to a 10-year plan for City and would put funds in place to bring in new players during the January transfer window.

"While January is going to be an interesting opportunity for Mark to improve the team, this is an exciting dynasty we are building and we are only in the first two months.

"I think people will see then that we have good foundations in place in the team, we have a good coach and that we will be upgrading in terms of players. Hopefully the results will come."

Meanwhile the Football Association have confirmed that City captain Richard Dunne and Gelson Fernandes, both sent-off against Tottenham, will receive one-match bans, meaning they will miss Sunday’s league match against Hull.

Ipswich fine Norris over ´handcuff´ celebration

November 10, 2008

LONDON (AFP) – David Norris was fined and warned as to his future conduct by his club, Ipswich Town, following a controversial goal celebration last weekend

Norris seemed to make a ‘handcuff’ gesture in support of his jailed former Plymouth team-mate Luke McCormick after scoring in Ipswich’s 1-0 victory away to Blackpool in English football’s second-tier Championship on Saturday.

McCormick is currently serving a sentence of seven years and four months for causing the deaths of Arron Peak, 10, and his brother Ben, eight, in a car accident when he was under the influence of alcohol earlier this year on his way home from Norris’s wedding.

In a statement, Ipswich said: "Whilst the club has heard David’s explanation that his gesture was in no way intended to condone or support the actions of his friend Luke McCormick, he was found to have been insensitive to the possible interpretation that such a gesture may create.

"David Norris has subsequently been fined by Ipswich Town Football Club, and warned about his future conduct."

The statement, which didn’t say how much Norris had been fined, added that: "David deeply regrets that his actions have been wrongly interpreted and has today (Monday) written a personal and private letter to Mr and Mrs Peak.

"In hearing the player’s explanation, the club also regrets the potential for misinterpretation of the gesture and would like to make a donation to an appropriate charity, equal to the fine imposed on the player.

Ipswich’s move does not prevent the Football Association from taking disciplinary action of its own.

Speaking before the club announced it was disciplining Norris, an FA spokesman said earlier Monday: "We are aware of the incident and have written to Ipswich to seek an explanation from David Norris for his actions and await his response."

Norris, 27, told Monday’s Daily Mirror: "It wasn’t a handcuff sign, it was a private message but I can see why people have seen it like that.

"I apologise if anyone was offended by it.

"Luke is a friend who made a massive mistake and he is paying for that."

Amanda Peak, the boys’ mother, told the Mirror the gesture was insulting.

She said: "I’m disgusted. To celebrate a goal like that is disrespectful to me and my husband and my boys. He should be given a ban by his club.

"Norris is doing this in front of thousands of supporters, including children, and sending out the wrong message that we can drink and drive and it’s OK to kill someone."

Antigua & Barbuda beats St. Kitts 4:3 to claim last berth in Caribbean Championship finals

November 10, 2008

MACOYA, Trinidad – Antigua & Barbuda claimed the last place in the field for the Digicel Caribbean Championship finals, beating St. Kitts & Nevis 4:3 on Sunday.

Peter Byers and Jamie Thomas scored a pair of goals each to overcome three second-half tallies by St. Kitts’ Jevon Francis.

The victory finished St. Kitts in second place in Group H of Caribbean qualifying with six points, one behind Trinidad & Tobago which finished the schedule by drawing 1:1 against Guyana in the late game. Trinidad and Antigua joins host Jamaica, defending champion Haiti as well as Barbados, Cuba, Guadeloupe and Grenada in the December 3-14 finals, from which four teams will qualify for next year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Byers scored both of his goals in the first 45 minutes, the second on a penalty just before halftime that earned St. Kitts’ goalkeeper Akil Byron a red card. Antigua enjoyed a man advantage for a few minutes, itself being reduced to 10 men when Justine Cochrane drew his second yellow card in the 47th.

Francis scored in the 57th, 70th and 80th minutes to get St. Kitts within one three times, but Thomas replied in the 59th and 73rd to twice restore a two-goal cushion and provide the eventual winner.

The result rendered the nightcap meaningless, with Devon Jorsling scoring his second goal in as many games in the 85th to rally Trinidad for the draw. Gregory Richardson scored his second in the group, converting a penalty in the 58th after Keon Daniel was called for a handball on a cross by Randolph Jerome.

Premier League best in the world? Don’t believe the hype

November 10, 2008

The British press are purring after Arsenal’s clash with Manchester United was decided by French winger Samir Nasri’s two strikes.

“Onlookers across the world were reminded that this sport, in its modern form, can cause excitement and awe in equal measure,” wrote the Guardian’s Kevin McCarra of Arsenal’s breathless 2-1 win over the champions.

After Arsenal’s bonkers 4-4 draw with neighbours Tottenham Hotspur two weeks ago, Hull City’s unbelievable start to top-flight life and the fact that Liverpool might just be genuine title contenders, the Premier League is once again ‘the best league in the world’ TM.

Or is it?

For the few upsets so far (Hull and Stoke City beating Arsenal), the chasm between the top four and the rest remains as vast as ever. Give United their game in hand and the gap between Champions League and UEFA Cup football may only be three points but can anyone really see Aston Villa, 2-1 losers at home to Middlesbrough on Sunday, breaking into the exclusive club?

While the melee below promises a cracking relegation battle, it also resembles the tightness of the Championship in recent seasons. You could comfortably divide the English divisions into five and not four.

And for every exhilarating Arsenal win over Manchester United, there’s a cagey 1-0 Liverpool victory at Chelsea or a dogged 2-1 Liverpool success over United. If every big four clash was as good as Saturday, then onlookers across the world would rightly be excited. The fact is they’re not.

Away from the top four and things get steadily worse. Last month Sunderland beat Newcastle United 2-1 in a North east derby. It may have been a windy day, but it was awful stuff.  Sky Sports summariser Jamie Redknapp told us that this was in fact what English football “was all about”.

Haste over timing. Tempo over quality. A colleague simply remarked: “Is this the 39th game we want?”

Is the Premier League so good that the wider world wants to host a wretched midtable battle?

And on a weekend where Barcelona scored their 34th Primera Liga goal in 10 games and Real Madrid came back from a goal down three times, missed a penalty and still won 4-3, is it the best league in the world?

Ribery’s uniquely beguiling talent

November 10, 2008

The question of whether such-and-such a player is the world’s best tends to generate more heat than light, and a great many superlatives directed at Cristiano Ronaldo.

So, let me phrase this as carefully as I can: Just at the moment, is Franck Ribery the most influential player in Europe?

Ribery’s return to fitness, after his ankle ligament injury at Euro 2008, has coincided with Bayern Munich’s return to form, and of course, it’s no coincidence at all.

Juergen Klinsmann found his first couple of months as Bayern coach very difficult, as teams discovered they no longer had to treat the Ribery-less champions with quite such respect.

The Frenchman returned to the team with a tentative 45-minute run-out in a 1-0 defeat in Hanover. He looked a little more comfortable in the subsequent 3-3 draw with Bochum and sparked a memorable comeback with his first goal against Wolfsburg on Oct. 25.

His form has been improving ever since and he made it four goals in four games with a jaw-dropping winner in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Schalke.

He contributed far more than just another goal, though, as his beguiling balance and control threatened danger every time he took the ball forward, and at times made fools of Schalke defenders.

With Ribery in this form, Bayern are a team transformed. Rivals can’t afford to press too far forward against them for fear of being slaughtered on the counter-attack. It makes Bayern’s defence look much more comfortable (as much as they can be in front of a goalkeeper who does not catch crosses).

There may be more gifted players than Ribery, and, yes, Ronaldo springs to mind, but I’m not sure there’s a single player who makes so much difference to a league title race.

Messi in Spain? Certainly influential, but you get the feeling Barcelona could survive pretty well without him. Benzema at Lyon? Perhaps. But is there anyone else head and shoulders above the rest of their league? As always, let us know in the comments.

FORMER FENERBAHCE PLAYER ANELKA TAKES CHELSEA ON TOP

November 10, 2008

The Former Fenerbahce player Anelka, who had four goals in his last two Premier League games going into the match at Ewood Park, added his 10th and 11th notches of the season as Luis Felipe Scolari celebrated his 60th birthday in style.

In appalling conditions at Ewood Park, it was Blackburn who made the brighter start with Keith Andrews lifting a shot high over the bar in the first minute.

But the Blues were soon on the front foot and Andrews’ poor back pass let Anelka in on goal. When the striker rounded Paul Robinson, a goal looked inevitable. However, Anelka lost his footing after skipping past the England goalkeeper, and despite appeals for a penalty, Chris Foy correctly waved play on.

Blackburn again had Robinson to thank when he expertly saved Anelka’s header and then again from John Obi Mikel, before another fine save denied Frank Lampard’s 25-yard effort.

But the Blues finally made the breakthrough five minutes before the interval in freakish circumstances when Alex’s long-distance strike struck Anelka’s thigh and trickled past the wrong-footed Robinson.

Rovers brought on Matt Derbyshire at the interval and the youngster gave Rovers attack added impetus, with Morten Gamst Pedersen trying his luck from range.

But Jason Roberts then spurned a gilt-edged chance to restore parity when Pedersen played the striker through on goal, with Petr Cech quickly scampering out of his goal to block his shot.

Rovers were made to pay for that miss on 68 minutes when Lampard poked the ball through to Anelka and he reacted quickly to dink the ball over the advancing Robinson to double the Blues’ lead.

Chelsea had further chances to add to their lead with Lampard’s free-kick crashing against the crossbar, and Anelka being denied a hat-trick by a fine block from Robinson.

But the three points put the Blues back on top of the pile while Blackburn – now six league games without a win – remain 14th, two points clear of the drop zone.

Anderson ready to be Fergie´s next gem

November 10, 2008

MANCHESTER, England (AFP) – Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Anderson to become Manchester United’s next midfield legend as he prepares to unleash the Brazilian and his fellow Old Trafford young guns against Queen’s Park Rangers on Tuesday.

The Premier League champions, stung by Saturday’s 2-1 league defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, face Championship outfit QPR in the League Cup fourth round with boss Ferguson ready to rest his established stars.

Promising youngsters Jonny Evans, Rodrigo Possebon, Darron Gibson and Danny Welbeck are all set to be handed the chance to shine.

But Ferguson admits that 20-year-old Anderson, a 19 million pounds buy from Porto 18 months ago, is the player that he has the highest hopes for amongst his young crop when it comes to emulating the likes of Roy Keane and Paul Scholes.

Ferguson said: "Anderson is a different type of player altogether to Roy Keane, but when you are looking for that central midfield player – we’ve got Scholes who is coming to the end of his career, Roy Keane has left us to try his hand at management – you say, ‘who is going to function for Manchester United?’

"Then a 19-year-old lad comes in and you see his performance level. You know he is going to become a terrific player and life moves on. United move on, it’s inevitable.

"Our style has changed over the last few years. We’ve got different types of players to ten years ago, so you cannot replicate every team with identical players.

"When I first came here they used to say Bryan Robson was king and you cannot win a game without him. I began to believe it as well because we didn’t operate as well without him.

"We had to change the mentality – change the mental toughness. They thought you could never find another Robson, but then Roy Keane came along and filled the breach marvellously.

"Then they thought you would never get another Keane, but then someone like Anderson steps through the door and the cycle just keeps going."

United crashed out of the League Cup to Coventry City last season after Ferguson rested his first-team stars in favour of handing his youngsters valuable experience.

The experiment backfired, however, and two Michael Mifsud goals sealed a famous 2-0 victory for the Sky Blues at Old Trafford.

Iain Dowie, who guided Coventry to that giant-killing, misses out on the chance to repeat the feat with QPR having been sacked by the west London club last month.

Caretaker-manager Gareth Ainsworth is set to remain in charge for the trip to Old Trafford after inspiring his team to a 1-0 weekend win against Cardiff City.

But the former QPR midfielder admits that the glamour clash against the European champions has barely been mentioned at Loftus Road since the draw was made last month.

Ainsworth said: "The United game has not been in my thoughts because we have had enough to focus on with the league games.

"The players discussed it when the draw was made, but now that the Cardiff game is out of the way, we can all start planning for Old Trafford."
