November 20, 2008

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – Roy Myrie scored a goal in each half and Costa Rica remained perfect in World Cup qualifying, beating El Salvador 3:1 Wednesday night for its eighth straight victory.

Both teams already had clinched their places in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying. Costa Rica finished with six wins from as many games, having outscored its opponents 20:3.

Myrie, playing in only his second qualifier this year, scored in the 23rd and 94th minutes. Jose Fernandez also scored in the 29th, helping the Ticos rally from an early deficit after Rudis Corrales put El Salvador ahead in the 17th minute.

Costa Rica won Group C with 18 points, eight ahead of El Salvador. The two will join the USA, Trinidad & Tobago, Honduras and Mexico in next year’s final round of qualifying. All six teams will learn their schedule for the “hexagonal” on Saturday, when FIFA conducts the draw in South Africa in conjunction with the Confederations Cup draw.
