Diego Maradona to Travel To England This Weekend in Preparation for Scotland Friendly

November 1, 2008

In his first act of business as head coach, Diego Maradona will travel to England this weekend to monitor the progress of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano.

Not wanting to waste anytime getting started with his first-team selection, El Diez will fly to England tomorrow to see two of Argentina’s top stars, first visiting Tevez’s Manchester United when they host Hull City at Old Trafford, and then to London when Mascheranos’s Liverpool face Tottenham. While Maradona has said in the past that Mascherano is guaranteed a spot on the national team, the situation with Tevez is a little trickier, with el Apache seeing more time on the substitute bench after the arrival of Dimitar Berbatov this summer.

In other news, Maradona it seems will indeed manage the team for its November 19th friendly in Glasgow against Scotland. Diego expects a warm reception from the Scots, saying “I’m going to a country where they adore me because of the goal against the English. The English and the Scots get on horribly – serious bad blood. But now we are going to play a game against Scotland, where they are going to treat us well.”

If he hopes to receive a warm reception from disillusioned Argentina fans who are unsure about their newest head coach, let’s hope he can ease their fears by getting a victory.
