Eight-man Porto beat Sporting on penalties
November 10, 2008
LISBON (SW) – Despite conceding no less than three red cards in their Portuguese Cup encounter with Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto somehow made it through to the next round.
The home side took the lead through Liedson on 29 minutes, but Porto’s new signing Hulk levelled the score just before the half hour mark.
Porto then went down to ten in the 67th minute as Caneira picked up a second yellow card. And things got even worse when Pedro Emanuel earned his second caution as well and joined his teammate for an early shower.
No more goals were scored in regular and extra time and regular time was required at Jose Alvalade stadium in Lisbon.
Porto goalscorer Hulk became the away side’s third player to be sent off with a second booking in the 116th minute, but his team managed to survive the last few minutes to force a penalty shoot-out.
Porto were the better side in that shoot-out, beating their rivals 5-4 to advance to the next round.
