Ronaldo Turns Down €100,000 per Goal Comeback Deal

November 7, 2008

The great Ronaldo comeback (part IV, approximately) is still going to happen. We think. But it won’t be happening at Siena after Ronaldo turned them down, despite rumours of a €100,000 per goal offer.

His agent broke the news to Siena fans none too gently:

“Everyone would like to have a player like Ronaldo on his team and we appreciate all the interest, but with all due respect to Siena, after nine months recovering (from a knee injury) Ronaldo cannot play for a team that is struggling to not fall (to the relegation zone.) He has to play for a competitive team.”

So if Ronaldo’s not going to play for Siena… who is he going to play for?

He’s apparently had “very interesting talks” with Man City (read: “ker-ching-a-ling-a-ling”) and says PSG have been winking at him too. But appearing on TV Globo in Brazil this week Ronaldo suggested that his time Europe might be over.

There’s been some Ronaldo-to-MLS talk too, which might be a good idea marketing wise. But how would Ronaldo’s knees hold up on the numerous artificial surfaces? Not well, is my guess.

The man is 32 years old now. With injuries and all he’s not going to be a key player on a big European team again, and doesn’t seem keen to play for a mid-table team, whatever sort of money’s on the table (see above).

So seems that the long rumoured return to Brazilian football with boyhood idols Flamengo is the way to go. After suffering injuries that would have ended lesser men’s careers several times over, it would be a monumental achievement for Ronaldo just to play professional football again. For anyone. If it’s really Ronaldo’s ambition to play for Flamengo, he may as well do it while he still can.
