Suriname, Haiti close out World Cup qualifying campaign with 1:1 draw

November 20, 2008

PARAMIBO, Suriname – Wensley Christoph scored his fourth goal this year and rallied Suriname to a 1:1 draw with Haiti on Wednesday, the final World Cup qualifier for both teams.

Both teams already had been eliminated from the semifinal round of CONCACAF qualifying . Haiti, as defending champion, next will concentrate on the Digicel Caribbean Championship finals, which will be played in Jamaica December 3-14.

Lionel Saint-Preux gave Haiti the lead in the 30th minute, but Christoph, who also scored against Montserrat in the first round of qualifying and both of Suriname’s goals in a 2:2 draw at Haiti in August, equalized in the 41st.

While Haiti qualified for the 1974 finals, this is the closest Suriname has come to reaching the World Cup since advancing to the final round of qualifying for the 1978 championship.
