Adams rules out Portsmouth clearout
December 8, 2008
LONDON (AFP) – Portsmouth manager Tony Adams has denied suggestions he could be forced to offload stars like Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch in January after the club was put up for sale by owner Alexandre Gaydamak.
Former Arsenal and England defender Adams, who succeeded Harry Redknapp as manager, has received assurances from Gaydamak that he will not have to sell to reduce debt levels and make the club more attractive to potential buyers.
"The owner has been very supportive," Adams said. "I couldn’t ask for better people to work for and I am just not saying that. If a ridiculous offer comes in, I’ll accept it to be honest but he has not said to get rid of anyone.
"It will be my decision, that is the guarantee he has given me. In fact, I might add one or two players but that’s it. I am not going to panic in January."
Adams believes that, in the current economic climate, it will take some time for Gaydamak to find a buyer.
"There are a lot of football clubs up for sale at the minute," he said. "The owner said he can’t give the time and energy needed but he doesn’t have to sell it today. He said he doesn’t need to do it now. It is not going to be tomorrow. It isn’t going to be in January, I think."
"It will not be until the right people with the right values come along."
FA Cup holders Portsmouth are currently seventh in the English Premier League table after a 1-1 draw at bottom side West Brom on Sunday.
