Moratti confident of Inter progress
February 26, 2009
MILAN, Italy (AFP) – Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti said he was confident his side would progress to the Champions League quarter-finals despite seeing them dominated by Manchester United in their second round first leg clash at the San Siro.
The game finished 0-0 with Sir Alex Ferguson’s team missing a host of chances and coming up against an unbeatable Julio Cesar in the Inter goal.
And now a score draw at Old Trafford in two weeks time will be enough for Inter to progress at the expense of the competition holders.
"I’m quite confident. What I know is that in the Champions League it’s extremely important not to concede goals at home," he said.
"Just as it’s vital to score away. I also think Manchester United will have been very disappointed not to have scored.
"And for our part, we’re delighted about that and now we can go to Old Trafford and play a match that will be like a final."
The second leg is in Manchester on March 11.
Moratti admitted his players seemed scared in the first period but claimed they turned it around after half-time, even though United still clearly enjoyed the better of things in the second period.
"We respected our opponents, we were afraid to make mistakes and that held us back a bit in the first half," he added.
"But the strength of the team showed through in the second half and even at the end of the first period. There was a clear change in attitude."
