NEW YORK – The CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship scheduled to begin Wednesday in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, has been postponed indefinitely due to the growing concerns of swine flu in the country.

The decision by CONCACAF, in consultation with FIFA and Beach Soccer Worldwide, the organizer for the event, follows the decision Monday to cancel the remainder of the U-17 Championship and postpone the second leg of the Champions League final to safeguard the health and safety of players, officials and fans.

A new date for the six-team CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship, which was to conclude Sunday with the title match, has not been determined. Different options are being evaluated along with local authorities.

Monday’s decision to cancel the semifinals and finals of the U-17 Championship in Tijuana and postpone the Champions League match between Atlante and Cruz Azul in Cancun followed the move by Mexican governmental authorities to close schools nationwide.
