Pair of quick goals dooms United States 3-0 at U-20 World Cup

September 27, 2009

The United States allowed a pair of goals two minutes apart and fell to European champion Germany 3-0 Saturday in its opening game at the Under-20 World Cup.

Richard Sukuta-Pasu twice challenged in the United States net in the opening minutes and Semih Aydilek finally gave Germany the lead in the 30th minute, converting a penalty after being fouled by Brian Ownby.

The deficit doubled in the 32nd when a corner floated to the top of the area and Florian Jungwirth settled before left-footing a shot that Brian Perk could only get his fingers to before it settled in the roof of the net.

Second-half substitute Bryan Arguez tried to rally the Americans, shooting just wide in the 47th and sending Mikkel Diskerus for an attempt thwarted only when Germany keeper Ron-Robert Ziegler raced off his line to block the shot.

Jared Jeffrey hit the crossbar in the 66th minute, but Manuel Schaeffler ended any comeback hopes for the United States when he added a third German goal six minutes later.

The United States will try to revive its Group C hopes on Tuesday when it faces Cameroon, which defeated Korea Republic 2-0 in their opening game.
