`Maradona`s behaviour is unacceptable`
October 19, 2009

Diego Maradona`s behaviour after the match against Uruguay topped the headlines for days. Dutch legend Johan Cruijff states that Maradona`s behaviour is out of order.
`I`m glad Argentina managed to qualify for the World Cup but I`m not pleased with national coach Maradona`s behaviour,` Cruijff said in Dutch paper De Telegraaf.
`The way he presented himself towards the press after Uruguay-Argentina is unacceptable. People like him form an example for everyone, especially for the youth.
`Then you can`t behave the way Maradona did.`
Argentina secured a ticket for the World Cup by beating Uruguay (0-1). After the game, Maradona hit out at some journalists.
`The participation of Argentina is good for the World Cup`s impact,` Cruijff said.
`Together with Brazil, England, Germany and Italy the Argentines should always participate in a World Cup, based on historical reasons.
`They managed to qualify right at the end an as a football fan I`m glad they did.`

Argentina: San Lorenzo stay on top as Estudiantes lose
October 19, 2009

Estudiantes left the Argentinian league lead to San Lorenzo as result of a 2-1 defeat at Newell’s Old Boys. Boca Juniors earned a 2-1 win over Tigre.
Joaquin Boghossian scored the opening goal for Newell’s after 28 minutes against Estudiantes, for whom a win would have left them in first position.
Leandro Benitez equalized in the 30th minute but Rolando Schiavi made it 2-1 in minute 77.
Estudiantes are now stuck in fifth place behind San Lorenzo, Colon, Argentinos and Velez Sarsfield.
Boca Juniors beat Tigre 2-1 with two goals from Osvaldo Gaitan, one in the 50th minute and one in the 59th. Carlos Luna scored one back in minute 78.

Big four are starting to crack: Man City´s Hughes
October 19, 2009

Mark Hughes believes Manchester City’s impressive start to the season proves the Premier League’s big-four are no longer invincible.
City are showing signs of being able to compete with the best in England and they are now in fifth place, five points behind leaders Manchester United with a game in hand, after grinding out a 1-1 draw with 10 men at Wigan on Sunday.
Hughes’s 120-million-pounds spending spree during the close-season has laid the foundations for City to break the monopoly on the Champions League places enjoyed for so long by United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal.
With Tottenham and Aston Villa also strong and Liverpool and Chelsea both losing this weekend, Hughes senses the Premier League’s elite are starting to get twitchy.
“There are some good teams in the Premier League this year,” the Manchester City boss said. “There is a focus on ourselves because we have the ambition to have a good season.
“But the fact there is a threat to the teams who have had those top four places is adding extra pressure.
“You just sense maybe that feeling of invincibility is no longer there. Other teams think they can take points off them.
“There are two or three teams who quietly think they can get into the top four.
“They don’t broadcast it so they keep themselves under the radar. We can’t help but be one of the teams people think should be in the top four.
“We have to deal with that anyway. I just think this year has the potential to be as open as it has ever been because the top four teams will drop points.
“That has been evident at the beginning of the season and I think it will continue. It is good for the Premier League.”
But for City defender Pablo Zabaleta’s second half dismissal it is likely Hughes’s side would have taken three points at the DW Stadium.
Hughes felt Zabaleta’s first-half caution for a foul on Maynor Figueroa was harsh. However, his second tackle on Jason Scotland left referee Alan Wiley with little alternative other than to show the red card.
It was Wiley’s first appearance since Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s attack on his fitness, for which the Scot has since apologised.
Hughes didn’t complain about the dismissal but he did claim that Figueroa’s tackle on Shaun Wright-Phillips in the closing stages should have been a penalty.
“He was in an excellent position – he had kept up with play very well,” Hughes said.
“He made a wrong call but his positioning was excellent. Well done Mr Wiley.”
Charles N’Zogbia had given Wigan the lead in first half stoppage time before Martin Petrov lashed City level two minutes into the second half.
Latics boss Roberto Martinez took heart from the way his side out-played City in the first half and said: “I would say the performance was well worth a victory.
“Manchester City are an outstanding team with a fabulous group of players but our performance deserved the three points.”

Panathinaikos held by Kavala
October 19, 2009

Panathinaikos are no longer the only leaders in the Greek league, following Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Kavala.
Kavala initially seemed to head for a surprise result against Panathinaikos, with goals from Benjamin Onwuachi in the 21st and 43rd minutes.
But the experienced Kostas Katsouranis gave ‘Pana’ new hope in minute 57 and former Liverpool forward Djibril Cisse eventually saved the day for the visitors near the full time whistle.
Panathinaikos now have to share their lead with Olympiakos; both have 19 points from seven games.
AEK Athens beat Panthrakikos 3-2, with goals from Daniel Majstorovic, Zeljko Djokic (own goal) and Ignacio Scocco. Bedi Buval and Bertrand Robert scored for the guests.

Belgium: Late goal leads Brugge past Gent
October 19, 2009

Club Brugge remain on top in the Belgian league following Sunday’s 1-0 victory over Gent.
It wasn’t an easy match for Brugge however, and the hosts needed until the 87th minute for Peruvian Daniel Chavez to break the deadlock and score the only goal of the match.
Gent couldn’t control their frustration, and Milos Maric picked up a second yellow card two minutes into extra time.
Brugge are one point ahead of traditional rivals Anderlecht, and Mechelen follow at another two points. Standard Liege are currently in fourth place.

Flamengo stop Palmeiras in Brazilian league
October 19, 2009

The Brazilian league is anything but decided with eight matches to go, as Palmeiras failed to extend their lead. Instead, the leaders lost 0-2 against Flamengo.
Both goals at the match between Palmeiras and Flamengo were scored by Dejan Petkovic. The Serbian midfielder first found the target in the 24th minute, and then did so again on the hour mark.
Internacional failed to reduce the gap to three points however, being held to a 2-2 draw at Fluminense.
Alecsandro put Internacional ahead after 13 minutes, but had his goal canceled out by Gum in the 42nd. Maquinhos then restored the away side’s lead in the 65th minute but Gum again netted the equaliser, this time with four minutes left to play.
Palmeiras keep an advantage of four points over second-placed Atletico Mineiro. Internacional follow at another point.

Fenerbahce lose, Galatasaray win in Turkey
October 19, 2009

Fenerbahce suffered their first defeat of the season in Sunday’s away match to Gaziantepspor, while Galarasaray earned a 4-3 win over Trabzonspor.
The match between Gaziantepspor and Fenerbahce seemed to head for an away victory after Semih Senturk’s goal in the 26th minute, but Gaziantepspor never gave up, with a late turn-around as result.
Julio Cesar first leveled the score in the 84th minute, and then added a winning goal near the full time whistle.
Galatasaray beat Trabzonspor 4-3 in a very entertaining match in Istanbul. Harry Kewell opened the score in the 23rd minute and Servet Cetin doubled Gala’s advantage in the 37th.
Goals from Cora and Colman then allowed Trabzonspor to fight back to 2-2, but Turan and Baros soon reacted to restore the original gap. Colman pulled back another late on, but Galatasaray now held on to their lead to secure the three points.

Sparta beat Feyenoord in Rotterdam derby
October 19, 2009

Feyenoord Rotterdam failed to stay close to the top in the Dutch Eredivisie, losing the city derby with Sparta 2-1 on Sunday.
It was an eventful match at Sparta stadium, where Feyenoord initially took the lead with a goal from Andre Bahia in the 37th minute.
The guests then went a man down as Sekou Cisse conceded a red card in the 51st minute, and Sparta’s Rydell Poepon leveled the score a few minutes later.
Danish striker Jon Dahl Tomasson then followed Cisse to the dressing room with a red card in minute 59, but Sparta had a player sent off as well as Poepon picked up a second booking ten minutes later.
Kevin Strootman scored the winning goal of the match at six minutes from the end.
FC Utrecht were held to a goalless draw at FC Groningen, and remain in fifth place, one point behind Feyenoord.

Spartak and Zenit victorious in Russia
October 19, 2009

The Russian championship remains far from decided as both Spartak Moscow and Zenit St Petersburg won their matches on Sunday.
As league leaders Rubin Kazan beat FK Khimki a day earlier, Spartak and Zenit knew that a victory was necessary for them to keep the top spot in sight.
Spartak convinced in the Moscow derby with Lokomotiv, where Zhano Ananidze scored the opening goal in the 40th minute. Welliton made it 2-0 two minutes after the hour and Quincy Owusu-Abeyie netted a third with four minutes to go in regular time.
Zenit St Petersburg earned a rather clinical 0-2 win at Kuban Krasnodat. Alessandro Rosina opened the score in the 26th minute and Vladimir Bystrov found the target shortly after half time.
Rubin keep a one-point lead over Spartak, and Zenit follow at another three points. There are five match rounds left to go in the league.
