Hannover, Germany keeper Enke dead at 32

November 11, 2009

Hannover goalkeeper Robert Enke has died, aged 32, but details of his passing are very slowly emerging.

Officials say Enke was found in Neustadt, and unconfirmed reports indicate that the Germany goalkeeper threw himself beneath an oncoming train, thus indicating a suicide.

More details will be made at a press conference later this evening.

Enke, 32, began his career with Carl Zeiss Jena in Germany before stints at Borussia Mönchengladbach and Benfica.

The goalkeeper then made a transfer to Barcelona, but only appeared once for the first team and was twice sent out to other clubs on loan.

He returned to Germany for Hannover in 2004, and has made over 150 appearances.

Earlier this season, Enke missed a long stretch of action due to a severe bacterial infection.

Enke also made eight appearances for the German senior national squad.
