January sale shopping looks tricky for Premier League big four

I have my shopping list for the January sales but my need for a new desk-lamp is not as important as the requirements of the Premier League’s big four.

I’d say I could get my lamp quite cheap if I employ the Arsene Wenger technique of shopping around, making sure I get good value for money.

The thing is, Wenger needs a proven goalscorer now if he wants to win the Premier League and he doesn’t really have a lot of time to dwell on choices otherwise all the best ones will be gone, thankfully this shouldn’t be an issue with my lamp.

Reports say Bordeaux’s Marouane Chamakh is desperate to join but Wenger is more likely to wait until the end of the season when he is out of contract to snap him up for free rather than pay the money now to have him in January.

Bayern Munich’s Luca Toni maybe a more viable option for Wenger as he might be available on loan, which would fix the short term problem until Nicklas Bendtner and Robin van Persie return from injury and would give the Italian valuable game tie before the World Cup.

However, it looks like he is poised to join AS Roma.

Liverpool need players and lots of them. A second striker is a necessity, another creative midfielder is a must, a confident defender wouldn’t go a miss either, not even the 100watt bulb on my proposed new lamp could brighten up their so-far dismal season.

This could be Chelsea’s last delve into the market for some time should their transfer ban from FIFA be rubberstamped by CAS. They could do with a striker and perhaps a goalkeeper, if you read gossip sections in the British media which suggest Peter Cech’s recent blunders have put his first team place under threat.

Franck Ribery’s signature will probably be the most coveted in the transfer window and the Bayern winger has been strongly linked with the Premier League leaders. However, Chelsea’s priority should be upfront with the loss of Didier Drogba to the African Nations Cup and Nicolas Anelka through injury. The West London club look rather short in attacking options.

As for Manchester United, a healthy defender is a possibility, probably a loan signing is more likely as their current crocked defenders will no doubt all get fit soon. Perhaps another striker could also be brought in.

Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov don’t seem to be trusted by Alex Ferguson to start matches so maybe now with Wolfsburg out of the Champions League, he will try to sign Bosnian Edin Dzeko.

I’m glad my shopping list is far simpler.
