Schalke’s Matip out of Cameroon squad
January 7, 2010

Schalke midfielder Joel Matip failed to join the Cameroon squad for the African Cup of Nations on Wednesday, prompting the Indomitable Lions to search for a replacement.
Matip, 18, was born in Germany and there is still much doubt as to who he will represent at the international level. Cameroon coach Paul Le Guen named him to the squad for the tournament in Angola, despite Matip never appearing in any matches for Cameroon.
According to Schalke manager Felix Magath, the lack of a passport was the reason for Matip’s failure to join up with Cameroon.
Matip is eligible for Cameroon through his father, but is also eligible for Germany through his mother. The player was born in Bochum and has played his entire career in Germany.
