Keane fails to rouse Celtic as title hopes fade
February 3, 2010

Tony Mowbray’s hopes that his new look Celtic could revive their Scottish Premier League title challenge lay in ruins here on Tuesday after they were beaten 1-0 by relegation-threatened Kilmarnock.
Defeat leaves ‘The Hoops’ trailing bitter-rivals Rangers by 10 points.
The Celtic manager grabbed the headlines on transfer deadline day with the loan signings of Diomansy Kamara and Tottenham Hotspur’s captain Robbie Keane and the pair started the game in a line-up bereft of any Scots.
With such impressive additions to their attacking line-up Celtic were expected to dominate a Kilmarnock side hovering two points above bottom spot however Keane was denied a handful of chances by the impressive Cameron Bell.
But it was Kilmarnock debutant Chris Maguire who grabbed the headlines when he scored the only goal of the game seven minutes into the second-half to give his new side their first win over Celtic since May 2001, which leaves the losers title hopes in tatters.
Mowbray said he was disappointed not to reduce Rangers’ lead.
“There are no excuses. It didn’t roll for us tonight,” said Mowbray, who radically revamped the squad in January getting rid of several of predecessor Gordon Strachan’s players.
“I thought we had enough of the ball and possession and enough opportunities to win the game but didn’t take them.”
Jimmy Calderwood was delighted to get his first league win as Kilmarnock boss.
“We got the luck tonight as Celtic started really well,” said Calderwood, who replaced the long serving Jim Jefferies.
“But we hung on and started to play a wee bit and caused them problems and I thought Maguire was wonderful.”
Celtic supporters came in their thousands for the eagerly anticipated debut of Keane and his first meaningful involvement came just four minutes in when he teed up Ki Sung-Yeung to blast over the bar from 20 yards out.
Kilmarnock, who scored four against Dundee United at the weekend, soon showed their strengths going forward.
Liam Kelly was first to try his luck when he struck a swerving effort straight at Artur Boruc before Jamie Hamill fired into the side netting from a tight angle.
Despite their efforts it was the visitors who nearly took the lead.
Kamara’s corner was headed past Bell but Garry Hay was on the line to clear the danger.
Kamara then cut in from the left before flashing a powerful shot just wide of the post. As the game headed towards the break Keane, who had scored just once in his last 11 appearances for Spurs, squandered a hat-trick of chances.
Firstly he was picked out at the edge of the box by his Republic of Ireland colleague Aiden McGeady but his sidefooted shot was deflected wide before his attempt to chip Bell flew over the bar.
Keane should have scored when he raced into the box in the 38th minute but with only the keeper to beat the striker opted to place his shot too close to Bell, who recovered to save again on the rebound.
But it was a Kilmarnock debutant that grabbed the headlines when Maguire fired the home side into a 52nd minute lead.
Mehdi Taouil found the on-loan Aberdeen forward in space in the box and he struck an angled shot past Boruc into the bottom left-hand corner before defender Jos Hooiveld could close him down.
Keane was left frustrated when his goal-bound strike from Fortune’s weighted cross was deflected wide by Simon Ford and Glenn Loovens’ header was inches away from going in.
Ki was left holding his head as his fiercely struck shot from the edge of the box somehow stayed out before Bell made a point-blank save from Keane.

Celtic land Kamara in deadline day swoop
February 1, 2010

Celtic have signed Senegal striker Diomansy Kamara on loan from Fulham in a move that casts further doubt on the future of the Hoops’ Australian forward Scott McDonald.
As well as bringing in Kamara, Celtic announced on Monday that they had done a permanent deal to bring Motherwell’s teenage winger Paul Slane to Parkhead.
Manager Tony Mowbray was also hoping to tie up a transfer deadline day deal to take Holland international left-back Edson Braafheid on loan from Bayern Munich in order to fill the gap created by Danny Fox’s move to Burnley.
Kamara’s arrival follows last week’s capture of Denmark striker Morten Rasmussen and will inevitably intensify fears among Celtic fans that the club are preparing to cash in on McDonald, despite assurances to the contrary from Mowbray.
The Australian is currently sidelined by a hernia but that has not prevented enquiries about his availability from struggling English Premier League clubs Wigan and West Ham, as well as Championship outfit Middlesbrough, now managed by former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan.
Kamara, 29, has scored three goals this season in 13 appearances for Fulham, five of which came from the bench. He told Celtic’s website that he was looking to make the loan move permanent.
“Celtic is a magnificent football club,” he said. “I will be looking to do my very best to contribute and bring the supporters success and hopefully enjoy a long future with the club.”
The amount of the transfer paid for Slane was not disclosed but, with the player out of contract at the end of the season, Motherwell were not in a strong negotiating position.
Well chairman John Boyle admitted he had been disappointed by Slane’s refusal to sign a long-term contract at the club that fostered his talent.
“Paul has been at the club for six years and we have financed his development and nurtured his talent, culminating in his senior debut at the end of last season,” Boyle said.
“We have also stuck by and supported him over those years through both personal issues and injury and felt we were due some degree of loyalty for our efforts. Sadly, he has chosen to refuse our offers and move on to Celtic.”
Adding to Motherwell’s sense of grievance is the fact that Celtic were made aware of the player’s potential by their youth academy chief Chris McCart, who previously performed the same role at Fir Park.

Davis keeps Rangers on title track
January 30, 2010

Steven Davis scored one and set up the other two as Rangers retained their 10-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premier League with a 3-0 win over bottom side Falkirk on Saturday.
In the early kick-off, Marc-Antoine Fortune had a penalty saved as Celtic struggled to a narrow 1-0 win over Hamilton at New Douglas Park to put some pressure on their Old Firm rivals.
Danish striker Morten Rasmussen, in only his second appearance for the club, scored two minutes after replacing Georgios Samaras to net his first Celtic goal since signing from Brondby before Tomas Cerny saved Fortune’s spot-kick after Mark McLaughlin was adjudged to have felled the striker.
However, if the Rangers players felt any pressure it never showed and Davis gave them the lead with a superbly hit free-kick before setting up John Fleck and Steven Whittaker to seal the win in the second period.
The league leaders, despite injuries to top-scorers Kris Boyd and Kenny Miller, were expected to run rampant against the team propping up the table but both sides were evenly matched in the opening period.
Danny Wilson had the first opportunity of the match in the 16th minute when he headed Sasa Papac’s floated cross goalward but Robert Olejnik got down low to his right to save.
The much-maligned Kyle Lafferty won a free-kick on the edge of the box after being hauled down by Brian McLean in the 18th minute and from the resultant free-kick Davis gave Rangers the lead.
The Northern Irish international scored his second in two games as he curled his kick into the top right-hand corner of the net.
Scott Arfield should have done better when he was played into the box by Vitor Lima but he hit his shot straight at Allan McGregor.
The Bairns came close to an equaliser when Ryan Flynn’s header from Jack Compton’s corner was cleared near the goal-line by Lafferty.
Rangers could have doubled their lead seconds after the break when Davis picked out Lafferty in the box with a cross from the right but the Northern Irishman headed high and wide under no pressure.
Falkirk had captain Darren Barr to thank two minutes for blocking Nacho Novo’s shot when he bravely threw himself in front of his rasping effort.
The Spaniard and Lafferty both sent shots flying over the bar before Davis set up Fleck to make it 2-0 in the 57th minute.
The midfielder raced down the right wing and cut into the box before firing the ball across goal to the back post where Fleck was on hand to knock in his first league goal of the season.
Rangers fans didn’t have to wait long for their side’s next goal in the 62nd minute and once again Davis had a hand in it.
He sent a pass to Whittaker who controlled it with his back to goal before spinning his marker and racing into the box to fire low past Olejnik.
Elsewhere Hibernian scored a last minute goal to beat St Mirren 2-1 to stay third, Motherwell thrashed Aberdeen 3-0, Kilmarnock and Dundee United ended 4-4 and Jim Jefferies return to Hearts ended in a 1-0 defeat away to St Johnstone.

Everton ride luck to snatch win at Wigan
January 30, 2010

Tim Cahill’s late goal earned in-form Everton a smash-and-grab 1-0 victory at Wigan on Saturday that extends their unbeaten run to nine matches in the Premier League.
The visitors were indebted to off-colour finishing from a string of Wigan players, with Hugo Rodallega, Jason Scotland and substitute Paul Scharner all unable to convert presentable chances before Cahill struck in the 84th minute.
The Australian international midfielder, who also scored in the 2-0 mid-week win over Sunderland, was allowed to run unchecked onto Leighton Baines’s corner and he beat Vladimir Stojkovic with a powerful header.
Everton’s crossbar was rattled deep into injury time when Charles N’Zogbia crashed a rising drive against the woodwork, giving Everton their final let-off on an afternoon of close shaves.
Victory allows David Moyes’s side to edge to within two points of eighth-placed Birmingham, while Wigan remain 14th.
The visitors saw most of the ball in the game’s early stages but Wigan soon began to find gaps at the other end and their forwards Scotland and Rodallega both spurned chances to put the hosts in front.
First Rodallega was denied by Tim Howard in the Everton goal after Scotland set him free and when Rodallega returned the favour moments later, the former Swansea man blazed well over.
Everton handed a first start to on-loan Arsenal centre-back Philippe Senderos and his timely touch prevented Rodallega from putting Wigan in front just short of the half-hour as the Colombian prepared to pull the trigger.
Louis Saha had a strong penalty appeal waved away after tussling with Wigan new boy Gary Caldwell shortly before half-time, while Wigan old boy Baines tested Stojkovic from a free-kick early in the second period.
Controversy ensued shortly after when N’Zogbia was bundled over by Jonny Heitinga right on the edge of the Everton area.
The Wigan players appealed for a penalty but Alan Wiley gave a free-kick and the home side were unable to take advantage.
In their push for a breakthrough Wigan introduced Scharner, who has scored four of his 13 Premier League goals against the Toffees, and he twice went close, volleying over the crossbar and then shooting straight at Howard with 18 minutes to play.

Rasmussen off the mark to boost Celtic´s title challenge
January 30, 2010

Celtic closed the gap on Scottish Premier League leaders Rangers after Morten Rasmussen’s first goal for the club clinched a 1-0 win against Hamilton on Saturday.
Tony Mowbray’s side struggled for long periods at New Douglas Park but Danish striker Rasmussen came off the bench to steal the points with a second half winner.
Rasmussen’s goal enabled second placed Celtic to move within seven points of Rangers, who host Falkirk later on Saturday.
Mowbray rang the changes after Celtic’s midweek defeat against Hibernian and handed former AIK Solna defender Jos Hooiveld his debut, while Cameroon’s Landry NGuemo, back from the African Nations Cup, returned to the midfield and South Korea’s Ki Sung-Yueng came in for Marc Crosas.
Mowbray’s switches didn’t have the desired effect in the first half and his team almost conceded in the fourth minute when Andreas Hinkel was forced to head Brian Easton’s corner off the line.
Aiden McGeady led the Hoops response and the midfielder went close with a drive from the edge of the penalty area.
Celtic were struggling to find their rhythm and Hamilton’s Mark McLaughlin intercepted a pass intended for Georgios Samaras, strode forward and shot just wide.
Hamilton goalkeeper Tomas Cerny was called into action for the first time as he blocked Marc-Antoine Fortune’s shot before the striker smashed the rebound over the bar.
Darren O’Dea nodded a Ki corner over the bar before half-time as Celtic laboured to make any headway.
Celtic still seemed out of sorts after half-time and Ki sent a weak header tamely past the far post after Samaras’s cross presented him with a sight of goal.
Mowbray responded by taking off China’s Zheng Zhi and Samaras, with Niall McGinn and Rasmussen sent on.
The move finally sparked Celtic into life and Ki drew a fine save from Cerny with a powerful drive from just inside the area.
Celtic were the dominant force now and, in the 67th minute, former Brondby star Rasmussen broke the deadlock when he turned and drove home from close range after Ki’s shot was blocked.
Fortune squandered a chance to give the scoreline a more flattering look in stoppage time when McLaughlin fouled the forward in the penalty area to concede a penalty.
Although Fortune struck his spot-kick well enough, Cerny made a great save to keep the score down.

Rangers hope to cruise to title
January 30, 2010

Steven Davis believes Rangers’ easing injury list means they can maintain their 10-point lead over Celtic in the race for the Scottish Premier League title.
The Northern Irish midfielder was on target for the first time this season in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over St Mirren which saw Rangers increase their advantage at the top.
Victory came as Celtic were slumping to a 2-1 home defeat to Hibernian.
Rangers, who face relegation-haunted Falkirk on Saturday, had looked a little threadbare in recent weeks due to injuries and suspensions to key players.
Davis and his teammates had to rely on a last minute goal to rescue a point against Hearts last weekend as Walter Smith called-up several youth players.
However Nacho Novo, Kenny Miller, Steven Naismith and Pedro Mendes all returned in the midweek win over St Mirren and Davis believes this can boost their title hopes.
“These are difficult times for us at the moment with the number of injuries we have. This month, in particular, has been quite hard for the boys,” Davis said.
“But the boys who have come in have given the manager something to think about and we are starting to get a couple of players back. We have been missing a couple of important players recently and it will be good for us to get them back fit and get going again.”
Davis added: “We had a great run in December, but since then we have had injuries and suspensions and the manager has had to chop and change the side about. That can be disruptive.
“If we get everybody back fit it gives the manager a headache, a selection problem. Hopefully we can start playing better. We are capable of playing better.”
Kenny Miller may struggle to make the match against bottom club Falkirk after going off against St Mirren with a recurrence of his hamstring injury and top scorer Kris Boyd is still out.
Old Firm rivals Celtic head to New Douglas Park to take on Hamilton on the back of a costly defeat to Hibs.
Coach Tony Mowbray has stated that his side need to start winning games with his side only having claimed one victory so far this month and he will be boosted by the news several players have returned to training.
Scott McDonald, Mark Wilson and Shaun Maloney are all pushing for a top team return but the game against Hamilton may come too soon.
The Hoops boss might also be without Daniel Fox who is on the verge of joining English Premier League Burnley, but new signings Ki Sung-Yeung, Jos Hoovield and Morten Rasmussen, who made his debut against Hibs, are all available.
Elsewhere on Saturday only goal difference separates Aberdeen and Motherwell who meet at Pittodrie.
High-flying Hibs host St Mirren at Easter Road. John Hughes’ side sit in third-place, just two points behind Celtic, and any slip up from the Hoops could find Hibs climbing into the Champions League places.
Rugby Park is the destination for Peter Houston in his first game after being confirmed as Dundee United manager until the end of the season.
Kilmarnock are just one point above the relegation zone and are yet to win in the league under Jimmy Calderwood.
St Johnstone welcome a Hearts team looking to bounce back from their midweek thrashing at the hands of Aberdeen to McDiarmid Park.

O´Dea warns Celtic can´t afford any more losses
January 28, 2010

Celtic captain Darren O’Dea says his side can’t afford to lose any more games as they slipped ten points behind rivals Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premier League following a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Hibernian.
The stand-in skipper, playing just his third game since his return from a loan deal from Reading, watched as Marc-Antoine Fortune gave Celtic a fifth minute lead on Wednesday when he headed in off the crossbar for his third goal in two games.
However Hibs struck back against the run of play through Anthony Stokes mid-way through the first-half and as Celtic committed men forward in search of a winner a fast break from Hibs saw substitute Danny Galbraith fire a stoppage time winner past Artur Boruc.
At the same time Old Firm foes Rangers were racing to a 2-0 away win to St Mirren which increases the gap over Celtic, who are now just two points ahead of Hibs in third. Celtic now face two away games in succession starting with Hamilton on Saturday before facing Kilmarnock next Wednesday.
And while refusing to concede the title race was over O’Dea, instated as captain in the absence of Stephen McManus, said some players had to grow up quickly.
“This is a massive challenge although you cannot be at a club like this and shirk challenges and we roll on to Saturday,” the Irish defender said.
“It’s going to be tough and we’re going to have to do something about it. “It’s not going too well just now and the players have to step up and be men and win games for the club.
“No matter who is on the pitch, it is their responsibility to win games and too many players are not taking responsibility.
“We must win on Saturday and we must win next Wednesday. We can’t afford to lose games. At Celtic you don’t get the chance to lose games and mess about. We have to grow up quickly.
“We have a game in hand and still have Rangers to play twice so it’s not over by any means but it is a big challenge.”
His manager Tony Mowbray, who refused to answer questions on whether pressure was mounting on him following the defeat, insisted his side could still overhaul Rangers in the race for the championship.
“We have got to play Rangers twice and from the evidence of the first two games these are games we should be looking forward to,” the Hoops gaffer said. “There are enough games and enough points left. Both sides of the Old Firm have dropped points this season and there are enough teams at the top of the table that can take points from us.
“We have got to keep believing. We’re building a team here and when it clicks in place lets hope you see us go.
“I believe we can win every game. When I watch the football matches and see the flow of the games and the opportunities we create I think we had better believe we can win every football match starting on Saturday.”
However the Hoops gaffer added: “Is it right to believe we can win every game? I think so.
“Will we win every game? Probably not because the evidence of the season suggests we ain’t going to win every game but we will try to for our supporters and see where it takes us.”
Despite the loss to Hibs being their first at Celtic Park on league duty this season the Hoops’ form at home since the turn of the year has been poor with just two points from the last three games.
Mowbray added: “We have lost one all season at home in the league and I’ve got a strong belief that might be the last game we lose at home.
“They showed enough evidence that they can win football matches.
“Of course I’m concerned about the ten-point gap. We’d rather be ten points in front.
“Celtic fans watching the game will be disappointed and we’re disappointed. We’re all in this together and we’re all going in the same direction and when things click into place it will be the right direction I’m sure.”

Rangers open 10-point gap, Celtic slump
January 28, 2010

Rangers increased their lead at the top of the Scottish Premier League to 10 points with a 2-0 win at St Mirren on Wednesday as Celtic slumped to a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Hibernian.
Both Old Firm sides struck early with Steven Davis giving Rangers a second minute while Marc-Antoine Fortune headed Celtic ahead with four minutes gone.
However, Hibernian struck back against the run of play through Anthony Stokes mid-way through the first-half.
As Celtic committed men forward in search of the equaliser a fast break from Hibs saw substitute Danny Galbraith fire a stoppage time winner past Artur Boruc almost at the same time as Nacho Novo scored to make sure of the points for Rangers at St Mirren.
It leaves Walter Smith’s side ten points clear of Celtic, who have played a game less.
“Since I’ve come to the club the players have given me absolutely everything and I think that is possibly the result of the hard work they’ve given me,” Hibs manager John Hughes said after his side closed to within two points of Celtic.
Celtic manager Tony Mowbray said his side had missed an opportunity to keep apace with Rangers.
“We had enough chances to score more goals but give Hibernian credit as they defended resolutely. There were one or two tonight that didn’t reach the targets they have set for themselves this season,” said Mowbray.
Celtic’s pressing game had the visitors rattled from the start and a slack back pass almost allowed Georgios Samaras in before Fortune gave Celtic the lead in the fifth minute.
The striker leapt highest at the front post to meet a Paul Caddis corner and bullet a header off the bar and past Graeme Smith.
Aiden McGeady looked hungry for a goal and a shell-shocked Hibs side allowed him three opportunities in quick succession but he couldn’t find the target with any of them.
The chances continued to come for Celtic and Fortune headed well over from another Caddis corner before nodding wide after McGeady picked him out in the box.
The Easter Road side’s first real opportunity didn’t materialise until the 23rd minute when Stokes fired a fierce shot that Boruc did well to hold on to.
The Polish keeper then showed great reflexes to turn a Josh Thomson header round the post after the Celtic defender knocked the ball towards his own goal in the 26th minute.
However, Boruc was picking the ball out of the net from the corner as Stokes got in front of him to nod Derek Riordan’s corner into the net.
Hibs grew in confidence and a wicked bend in Riordan’s shot from 30 yards nearly fooled Boruc before Stokes drilled his effort just wide.
Celtic had the ball in the net in the 45th minute when Samaras knocked in on the line but the Greek striker’s effort was chalked off for a foul on keeper Smith.
The Hoops should have restored their lead seconds after the break when Fortune held off two Hibs defenders to slip in McGeady but he sent his shot wide.
Niall McGinn sent in a fierce ball across goal for Samaras but the Greek swung his foot at it and missed it completely.
Smith then pulled off a superb save from McGinn’s close range volley before the Northern Irishman made way for South Korean Ki Sung-Yeung.
Samaras’ torrid time in front of goal continued when he missed a golden chance to score when he headed a Caddis cross over the bar inside the six-yard box and he was immediately subbed to allow Morten Rasmussen to make his debut.
As Celtic pressed for a winner Ki lost the ball and Stokes broke quickly up the park before slipping sub Galbraith into the box and he fired an angled shot low past Boruc to give Hibs an injury-time winner.
Elsewhere Aberdeen won 3-0 away to Hearts, ten-man Motherwell held Falkirk to a goalless draw and Dundee United versus St Johnstone ended 3-3.

Celtic sign Viking raider Rasmussen
January 26, 2010

Celtic have signed Danish target man Morten Rasmussen from Brondby, the Scottish club announced on Tuesday.
Rasmussen, who has won three caps for Denmark, turns 25 on Sunday and has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract at Celtic Park following a transfer that reportedly cost Celtic more than one million pounds.
The 1.85m (6′1) forward scored 52 goals in 111 games for Brondby after signing for the club from AGF Aarhus in 2006, and he is hoping to book a place in Denmark’s World Cup squad by catching the eye in Scotland.
“It would be a dream for me to play in the World Cup and I will work hard to do well at Celtic and then maybe I will be able to go to South Africa,” he said.
Nicknamed ‘Duncan’ because of a similarity to former Rangers, Everton and Scotland forward Duncan Ferguson, Rasmussen is convinced he can make an impact in Scotland.
“I am a striker, I am strong in the box and that is where I score most of my goals,” he said. “I also fight hard for the team and I am good at holding the ball up.”
Rasmussen added: “I started at Aarhus, before going to Brondby, which was a bigger club, so moving to Celtic is another big step up for me.
“I am looking forward to my new career here. I hope to play a lot of football, score a lot of goals and that the team can win every competition that we are involved in.”
Rasmussen is Celtic manager Tony Mowbray’s fourth signing of the January transfer window, following South Korean midfielder Ki Sung Yueng, Dutch defender Jos Hooiveld and Norwegian defender Thomas Rogne.

Levein wants Ferguson back in Scotland squad
January 26, 2010

Scotland manager Craig Levein is aiming to convince former captain Barry Ferguson to return to international duty along with Allan McGregor and Kris Boyd.
Levein, whose first game in charge is an international friendly against the Czech Republic on March 3, has confirmed Boyd and McGregor are in his thoughts after discussions with the Rangers duo.
Now he hopes he can have a similar conversation with former Rangers midfielder Ferguson, now playing under former Gers boss Alex McLeish at English Premier League Birmingham City.
“I very much want him to be part of the international set-up, I think he’s one of our best players,” Levein told BBC Radio Scotland on Monday.
Ferguson and Rangers goalkeeper McGregor were banned for life for their behaviour before and during a World Cup qualifier against Iceland in April.
The pair were dropped after an all-night drinking session and then made V signs at photographers from the bench.
Boyd withdrew when former manager George Burley was in charge after being overlooked repeatedly.
Meanwhile former Dundee United manager Levein will look to expand Scotland’s player pool by compiling an extensive dossier of eligible players.
Levein and scout Michael Oliver plan to contact every agent in the UK in a bid to assess who could qualify for the country, either through established bloodline or the new five-year school rule.
“What we are trying to do is establish everybody – in the UK first and foremost – who is eligible to play for Scotland,” Levein told www.scottishfa.co.uk.
“In the past, we’ve relied on word of mouth or maybe speaking to managers, coaches and, sometimes, even physios down in England who say ‘Do you know so-and-so has a Scottish grandmother?’.
“In the past we’ve had some fantastic players for Scotland who were born in England but qualified through parentage or grandparents.
“The rules are there and every other country in the world uses them.
“My main aim is to help Scotland qualify for the European Championships in 2012 and, in order to achieve that, I think that the player database is a fairly sensible idea.
“I want the best players available and, to get the best players available, we need to know who they are and where they are.”
Scotland have not qualified for the finals of a major tournament since the 1998 World Cup in France.
