Easy victory for Sweden at Under-21 Championships

June 17, 2009

Tournaments hosts Sweden has a perfect start to their UEFA Under-21 Championships campaign, beating Belarus 5-1 in Malmo.

An impressive distance strike from Sergei Kislyak actually put Belarus ahead after 33 minutes, but an own goal from Aleksandr Martynovich allowed the home crowd to breathe a sigh of relief.

A few minutes later, Markus Berg found his way between two defenders and put the ball past keeper Chesnovski for a 2-1 lead. The FC Groningen forward went on to add a third just before half time.

The Swedes got another two goals late on, as Berg completed his hat-trick on 81 minutes followed by a fifth and final goal from Gustav Svensson with a distance strike in minute 89.

Consequently, Sweden are the first leaders in Group A, ahead of Tuesday’s other match between Italy and Serbia.

Standard held at Zulte-Waregem

May 3, 2009

RSC Anderlecht might make a difference this week as title rivals Standard de Liege drew 0-0 with Zulte-Waregem.

Standard, who ahead of this game had the same amount of points as Anderlecht, failed to scored the goal they craved and had a four-match winning streak come to a halt.

Anderlecht visit relegation candidates AFC Tubize on Sunday and a win would allow the Brussels outfit to create a two-points advantage over Standard.

KAA Gent moved into third place meanwhile, beating Cercle Brugge 2-1 while Club Brugge crashed to a 2-3 defeat by Lokeren.

KRC Genk easily defeated Lierse SK 1-4 in the semi finals of the Belgian Cup tournament, and are to face KV Mechelen in the final.

A 2-2 draw in the first leg left Genk with the obligation to score at least one away goal, and it was Tom de Mul to do so two minutes after half time. Stijn Huysegems made it 0-2 six minutes later.

Chris Janssen’s brought back some tension, scoring for 1-2 with five minutes to go but Huysegems and De Mul each went on to add another to their tally for a 1-4 final result.

Mechelen beat Cercle Brugge on penalties in Tuesday’s semi final.

Kurlson Benjamin had Bath Estate’s lone goal in the 26th after W Connection already had built a 3-0 lead.

In Suriname, Vaylison Lake gave CSD Barber hope with a goal in the 14th minute, and the Dutch Antilles’ club’s prospects improved further with the 21st-minute ejection of Inter’s Brayon Damba. But it failed to generate another goal and was eliminated.

Three first-round series remain undecided. Besides Cavaly-Britannia, Sevilla FC of Puerto Rico heads to Antigua to face the Greenbay Hoppers on Sunday after they two drew their first leg 3-3, and Tempete FC of Haiti hosts Alpha United of Guyana, also on Sunday, after they drew their first leg 1-1.

The second-round matches are set for April 13 and April 20, with the single-game semifinals scheduled for May 15 in Trinidad and the championship and third-place match two days later in Trinidad.
