Geremi heads to Turkey

February 1, 2010

Cameroon international Geremi has left Newcastle and signed for Turkish side Ankaragucu, the English club confirmed on Monday.

The former Real Madrid and Chelsea midfielder had been presented as an Ankaragucu player at the start of January but the final details of the transfer were only wrapped up at the weekend, allowing the transfer to go through on the final day of the mid-season window.

Geremi, 31, had been at Newcastle since 2007 and was briefly club captain under former manager Sam Allardyce.

The tough-tackling midfielder started this season as a first-team regular but fell out of favour with manager Chris Hughton, who was keen to off-load one of the highest earners at St James’ Park.

Ankaragucu have said that Geremi has signed for them on an 18-month deal

Rothen set to sign for Turkish side

January 24, 2010

Rangers manager Walter Smith admits that his team’s Jerome Rothen is on the verge of joining Ankaragucu. The deal will take the former Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain winger to Turkey on loan.

The 31-year-old has endured a hard time at Ibrox and has already spoken of his wish to secure a switch elsewhere during the January transfer window.

Rothen only moved to Scotland from Paris St Germain in September, but has struggled to make his mark and become a first-team player. Smith confirmed Rothen is set to move away from the Scottish outfit, although the move has not been finalized yet.

“Martin [Bain, chief executive] was dealing with that one,” Smith said after seeing Rangers held 1-1 by Hearts on Saturday.

“I think he is going there, although I don’t think it’s confirmed yet. But I think he is hoping to go there.”

Jo joins Neill at Galatasaray

January 22, 2010

Brazil striker Jo has joined Turkish club Galatasaray on loan until the end of this season, it was announced Thursday.

Jo was on a season-long loan from Manchester City to their Premier League rivals Everton, where he scored seven goals in 36 appearances during two spells at Goodison Park, but the Merseysiders confirmed that deal had been cut short.

He did not endear himself to manager David Moyes by returning to Brazil earlier this month without the Everton boss’s permission and a club statement said: “A season-long loan deal for the player had been agreed between Everton and Manchester City in the summer, but this has been cut short.

“Earlier this month David Moyes revealed that Jo had been suspended by the club for returning to Brazil without permission. That sanction proved temporary but Jo’s association with Everton has now ended,” the statement added.

Jo joined Australia defender Lucas Neill in leaving Everton for Galatasaray.

Neill only arrived at Everton in the close-season but left Goodison Park in a transfer reported to be worth 750,000 pounds (1.22 million dollars)

Jo came to City from Russian side CSKA Moscow in July 2008 for a fee of around 18 million pounds (29 million dollars).

But the 22-year-old did not become a regular at Eastlands, hence his loan spells with Everton.

A statement on Galatasaray’s official website said: “Our club have agreed to sign Brazilian Joao Alves de Assis Silva (Jo’s full name) on loan until the end of the season from English Premier League team Manchester City.

“He is welcome and we wish him success in the yellow and red jersey.”

Van Nistelrooy snubs Galatasaray move

January 18, 2010

Ruud van Nistelrooy has been the subject of many transfer rumours these days. His future remains uncertain but his agent insists the former Manchester United striker won’t move to Galatasaray.

“I’m getting many phone calls for Ruud, but he doesn’t want to play in Turkey,” said Van Nistelrooy’s agent Rodger Linse. The Real Madrid striker still has two weeks to sign for another club.

Van Nistelrooy has struggled to force his way into the Real side this season and he has also been hampered by injury problems. The 33-year-old hitman has only played one competition match for Los Merengues this season.

Tardelli: Trapattoni staying put

January 3, 2010

Republic of Ireland assistant manager Marco Tardelli insists Giovanni Trapattoni does not want to leave his post as manager of the Republic of Ireland national team. The Italian tactician has been linked to the Turkish and Nigerian post.

Trapattoni only signed a new contract to take charge of the Republic’s next qualifying campaign last year. However, after Fatih Terim resigned from the Turkey national team post, speculation has mounted that the Turks will try to prize Trapattoni away from the FAI.

However, Tardelli has moved quickly to quash the rumors linking Trap to a move away from Ireland.

“I have spoken with Trap but there’s no truth in it,” he told Radio Uno.

“Then there is also the story he’s going to coach Nigeria in the World Cup but there is absolutely no truth to any of these rumours.

“We are happy in Ireland.”

Fenerbahce back on top in Turkey

December 21, 2009

Fenerbahce moved to the top spot in the Turkish Super Lig with a 0-1 win at Trabzonspor on Sunday.

As arch rivals Galatasaray won their match with Genclerbirligi a day earlier, Fenerbahce needed a victory to jump back to first place.

After a goalless first half in Trabzon, it was Spanish striker Daniel Guiza to score the only goal of the match after 56 minutes.

Until this week, Fenerbahce shared first place with Kayserispor but the latter crashed to a 1-2 defeat by Antalyaspor on Saturday.

Galatasaray jump to top as Kayserispor lose

December 20, 2009

Kayserispor are no longer in first place in the Turkish Super Lig following a 1-2 defeat by Antalyaspor. Galatasaray beat Genclerbirligi to take advantage.

Only five minutes had passed in Kayseri when Korhan Ozturk put Antalyaspor ahead, and an own goal from Ariza Makukula doubled the gap four minutes after the break.

Omer Sismanoglu pulled one back in the 89th minute but it was too little, too late.

Galatasaray jumped to the top of the table thanks to a 1-0 win over Genclerbirligi in Istanbul. Harry Kewell scored the only goal after 77 minutes.

Bursaspor, who beat Besiktas 2-3 on Friday, also remain ahead of Kayserispor and are now placed second.
