Officials ban 81 Bayern fans for Mainz clash
January 19, 2010

The German Football Federation (DFB) on Tuesday announced they have banned 81 Bayern Munich fans, who are currently under police investigation, from attending Saturday’s Bundesliga clash against Mainz.
Police are investigating a disturbance last August in Wuerzburg, Bavaria, which involved 130 Bayern fans after their team lost 2-1 at Mainz and three officers were injured after clashes at the town’s railway station.
Saturday’s return game at Munich’s Allianz Arena has seen 81 fans banned, although there are court cases pending for charges of assault and breach of the peace against only 22 of those who have been excluded.
Bayern are currently third in the Bundesliga, two points behind leaders Leverkusen, while Mainz are 10th in the table.

Bayern plan Ribery talks
January 18, 2010

Bayern München have decided to postpone the contract talks with Franck Ribery until March. The Bavarian giants want the France international to concentrate on football first before they talk about a new deal. “We won’t put him under pressure,” said director of sport Christian Nerlinger.
Ribery is contracted to Bayern until 2011 and has doubts over a longer stay at the Allianz Arena.
“Franck came to us once in the summer,” Nerlinger said on Bayern’s official website.
“He said he felt very much at home in Munich and was grateful to the club, but there was one alternative which he could imagine himself taking. We declined, and the matter was closed internally.
“Franck has always behaved correctly, and I won’t hear a word said against him in this respect.”
The 26-year-old winger is yet to make a decision on his future. “We’ll sit down with him and talk in early March.
“We’ll set out our position, and he’ll explain his, and we’ll see if we can agree. It matters a lot to me that the process is fair and respectful.”

Bayern keen to extend Ribery stay
January 16, 2010

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says the club are keen to prolong Franck Ribery’s stay at the Allianz Arena. The 26-year-old has a contract with the German giants until June 2011.
The France international has been constantly linked with moves to top European clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Chelsea.
Rummenigge told Munich daily newspapers AZ and TZ: “Our goal is to prolong Franck’s contract, I will do as much as I can to keep him in Bayern.”
The French playmaker has been sidelined since the start of October with a persistent knee injury. However, Rummenigge knows Ribery’s importance for Bayern.
The chairman added, “Louis van Gaal (Bayern’s coach) has said he is convinced of Ribery’s talent and his importance for Bayern.
“Franck is without question the best player in the Bundesliga.”

Beckenbauer to get Bayern testimonial 33 years late
November 28, 2009

German football legend Franz Beckenbauer is to be honoured with a belated testimonial match by his former team Bayern Munich, 33 years after his departure.
The 64-year-old Beckenbauer left Bayern in 1977 for the New-York Cosmos, but no farewell match was held to mark his departure.
This oversight will be rectified in August 2010 when Bayern play Real Madrid at the Allianz-Arena, when Beckenbauer will be named honorary captain of the German club.
“His departure in 1977 didn’t occur as it should have … He is without a doubt the personality that has most marked the club,” Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said at the club’s annual general meeting on Friday.
Beckenbauer played 427 first division matches and scored 60 goals for Bayern between 1964 and 1977.
He won four Bundesliga titles, four German Cup and three European titles with the club. He played in the American league from 1977 to 1980 before joining Hamburg in 1982.
Beckenbauer also won the World Cup with Germany in 1974 and the European championship in 1976.

Want-away Toni can leave, says Bayern´s van Gaal
November 27, 2009

Italian want-away striker Luca Toni can leave German giants Bayern Munich in the January transfer window, coach Louis van Gaal said Thursday, but club bosses are hoping the pair can be reconciled.
Toni earned himself a 25,000 euros fine on Wednesday for telling the Italian media his relationship with van Gaal “is as good as over” following just four league appearances since the Dutchman took over on July 1.
With his World Cup place on the line, Toni has said he wants to return to Italy during the Bundesliga’s winter break in January in a bid to win back his place in the national team.
“The player has indicated he wants away. Then he must look for a club,” van Gaal told German channel Sat 1 after Bayern’s 1-0 win over Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Bayern’s team manager Uli Hoeness – who was set to replace Franz Beckenbauer as president of the German giants at the club’s AGM on Thursday – said Toni’s behaviour must change, but is hopeful the pair can patch up their differences.
“I will try to mediate on both sides,” said Hoeness.
“I think we have already got a small connection between them.
“I know we can’t accept his behaviour, but on the other hand there is always the posibility for men to apologise.
“That is still pending and if that happens there is a chance between him and Louis van Gaal.”
The glum-faced striker was in the stands at Munich’s Allianz Arena on Wednesday next to injured French midfielder Franck Ribery, and the Italian’s 24 league goals in 31 games in the 2007/08 season is now a distant memory.

Audi sign 90 million euro deal with Bayern
November 27, 2009

Car manufacturer Audi have bought a 9.09 percent stake in German football giants Bayern Munich in a deal worth 90 million euros (135.2m US dollars), the Bundesliga club announced on Thursday.
The ten-year deal pushes Bayern’s reported annual earnings through the 200 million euros mark.
The money will help towards repaying part of the 340 million euros debt for the Allianz Arena stadium which they share with second-division side 1860 Munich.
“I am sure that this partnership will open up many new global possibilities for us,” said Bayern’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
“I think it will help in the Asian market where Audi are already very strongly represented and we are looking forward to working closely together.”
After German sportswear giants Adidas invested in the Munich club in 2002 for 77 million euros, the deal would make Audi Bayern’s second main investor.

Van Gaal suspends Toni
November 25, 2009

Luca Toni has been fined for his comments about Louis van Gaal. Yesterday, the Bayern Munich striker blasted his manager in the Italian media and he’s now been dropped from the squad for the Champions League match against Maccabi Haifa on Wednesday night by his angry coach.
Since Van Gaal’s arrival at Bayern this summer, there were reports about the troubled relationship between the Dutch coach and Toni. The towering forward was disciplined by the club board earlier this month, after leaving the Allianz Arena in a huff when he was replaced at half-time during the match with Schalke 04.
“It’s been four months that I have had problems with him,” Toni explained to RAI. “I wish Bayern well. Sure, I’d like to go back to Italy to score those goals that would bring me back into the national team. After all, I am still the striker who has netted more goals than anyone for the Azzurri. Roma? I do have a good relationship with Totti…”
Van Gaal was angered by Toni’s comments and suspended his problem child. “He has to behave himself, just like the other players,” stated Van Gaal. Bayern must beat Maccabi Haifa to have a chance of advancing to the knockout stage of the Champions League, should Juventus win Wednesday in Bordeaux, the only thing left for Bayern is to secure a place in the Europa League that goes to the third-place finisher in the group.

Van Gaal faces Bayern axe
November 23, 2009

Louis van Gaal left the field under a chorus of whistles on Sunday. Bayern Munich were held to a draw by league leaders Bayer Leverkusen (1-1), a result that keeps the pressure on Van Gaal.
The Dutch tactician has been in the spotlight following Bayern’s poor form both domestically and in the Champions League, with progress to the knockout stages in severe doubt.
“I have to produce results,” said the Dutchman on Friday. “Because if I don’t, I’ll be fired. We have to win. The club needs success, but so does the coach.”
But Bayern failed to win, keeping their coach under fire. Van Gaal didn’t want to comment on a possible sack. “Our problem is that we saw a team which lacks confidence,” he said after the match against Leverkusen. “And I’m not the one who decides if I will be fired. I only have to focus on the squad.”
Club president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stated that Van Gaal remains at the helm at the Allianz Arena. “We want to try to turn the tide with Van Gaal.”
Sunday’s draw was Bayern’s sixth of the season and the only positive was they moved above Wolfsburg into seventh spot.

Leaders Leverkusen rout Frankfurt
November 7, 2009

League leaders Bayer Leverkusen opened a four-point gap at the top of the Bundesliga on Friday with a 4-0 demolition of Eintracht Frankfurt after scoring three goals in the first 11 minutes.
Having been named in the Germany squad for the first time since February earlier in the day, Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling netted in the second minute after Frankfurt failed to cope with a cross from striker Eren Derdiyok.
With the visitors still recovering from the early blow, 20-year-old defender Stefan Reinartz headed home on six minutes and then 19-year-old Toni Kroos rifled home a shot into the top right-hand corner on 16 minutes.
It was a night for youth when substitute midfielder Lars Bender, 20, came off the bench for Derdiyok in the 83rd minute and hit the fourth goal just three minutes later.
The result leaves Leverkusen on 26 points, with second-placed Werder Bremen, who are on 22 points, playing Dortmund on Sunday and third-placed Hamburg, also on 22 points, at Hanover the same day.
Fourth-placed Schalke have a chance to move into second-place if they can win at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena on Saturday.

Schalke ready to deepen Bayern’s wounds
November 6, 2009

Schalke 04 takes on Bayern Munich in this week’s Bundesliga’s top match. The Royal Blues will be looking for a repeat of last season’s result- a 1-0 victory. Bayern are sixth in the league and almost out of the Champions League after Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat at home against Bordeaux.
“It won’t be an easy game, but it’s definitely possible to beat Bayern,” said Schalke striker Jefferson Farfan at the club’s website.
“Great clubs like Bayern, who have such good players, are always under pressure. However, we’re only focusing on ourselves; their problems on the field are of no concern to us. We’ll just try to get the best possible result in Munich.”
Dutch coach Louis van Gaal, who feels the heat in the Allianz Arena after a weak start of the season will be able to call up some fresh legs as Belgian centre half Daniel van Buyten returns from his calf injury. Another boost for Van Gaal’s suffering side is the return of fully recovered Arjen Robben, who will reclaim his spot in the starting line up.
Striker Luca Toni is set to grab a spot ahead of Mario Gomez and Thomas Muller will return in midfield after his Champions League suspension.
Van Gaal gave his players a rare day off on Thursday to flush the midweek defeat out of their system, knowing that a defeat against Schalke would make his position uncomfortable.
“The day off is for the heads to clear and turn to focus on Schalke,” van Gaal told reporters. “This is a crucial match which we must win.”
