Mexico beat New Zealand 2-0 in World Cup warmup
March 4, 2010

Javier Hernandez and Carlos Vela both scored in the space of five minutes to lift Mexico to a 2-0 victory over New Zealand in a World Cup warm-up match for both teams.
Hernandez’s goal in the 53rd minute marked the second straight match in which he has scored for Mexico, after he produced two goals in a 5-0 victory over Bolivia in San Francisco last week.
The 21-year-old, who is the leading goal-scorer in Mexico’s fist division with eight goals in seven games for Chivas Guadalajara, opened the scoring as he headed a cross from Carlos Salcido past New Zealand goalkeeper Glen Moss.
Vela, who plays for English Premiership club Arsenal, replaced Aldo De Nigris to start the second half.
He doubled the score in the 57th minute, as he eluded three defenders and slotted the ball past Moss.
Vela muscled his way past defender Ben Sigmund on the edge of the penalty area, then out-maneuvered two other New Zealand players to score.
The two-goal lead warmed up the largely pro-Mexico crowd of 90,526 crowd on a damp, chilly night at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl stadium.
New Zealand’s best opportunity had come in the fifth minute when Boyens, who the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer, headed a corner wide.
For Mexico the match was the second in a series of six friendlies in the United States as they prepare to open their World Cup campaign against hosts South Africa on June 11.
Their first-round group also includes France and Uruguay.
The friendly offered Mexico coach Javier Aguirre a chance to see some of his Europe-based talent, including Vela, Salcido, Rafael Marquez, Andres Guardado and Giovani and Jonathan Dos Santos.
New Zealand, who will be playing in their first World Cup, had to make do without defenders Ryan Nelsen and Ivan Vicelich.
Nelsen, the team captain, suffered a hyperextended knee in Blackburn Rovers’ 3-0 English premiership win over Bolton Wanderers in February, while Vicelich is suspended.
New Zealand will travel to Europe in late May for further warm-ups against Serbia and Slovenia.
In the first round of the World Cup they are drawn in Group F with defending champions Italy, Slovakia and Paraguay.

Mexico qualifies for fifth straight World Cup with 4-1 victory
October 11, 2009

Mexico qualified for a fifth straight World Cup on Saturday, using a first-half own-goal and second-half tallies from Cuauhtemoc Blanco, Paco Palencia and Carlos Vela to beat El Salvador 4-1 and end the visitors’ slim hopes.
The win gave Mexico 18 points, moving it atop the standings in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying pending two matches later Saturday.
Marvin Gonzalez’s misdirected clearance attempt in the 26th minute put Mexico ahead, but Blanco’s finish in the 71st, Palencia’s tally in the 85th and Vela’s finale in injury time assured Mexico of being the first team to clinch a berth out of CONCACAF.
El Salvador remained with eight points, four points behind fourth-placed Costa Rica with one match to play. The top three sides are guaranteed places in the 32-team World Cup field while the fourth-placed team faces the fifth-placed side from South America for the last berth in South Africa.
Gonzalez’s own goal came after Andres Guardado fed Guillermo Franco at the top of the area. Franco was closed down but managed to get the ball to Cuauthemoc Blanco as he came through the area. Gonzalez made a lunging left-footed tackle and then while on the ground tried to kick the ball away with his right, but only dribbled it past goalkeeper Miguel Montes.
With Mexico repeatedly threatening, Blanco finally converted to give El Tri insurance. Ricardo Osorio drove a long ball to Blanco, who backheeled to Carlos Vela, who returned with a backheel to Blanco.
Blanco fed Franco, who drove on goal until he reached the top of the area and then sent the ball wide to an unmarked Blanco, who finished past an approaching Montes. Palencia scored in his first national team appearance since March 28, 2007 and Vela finished the celebration.
The match was delayed after the start for about 8½ minutes when a swarm of flying insects began to nest along the crossbar of the El Salvador net at Estadio Azteca. Montes complained to Guatemalan referee Carlos Batres as both swatted away the pests.
Batres halted the match in the second minute and grounds crews fumigated the goal area and another area that included television sound equipment. The effort appeared to work although players and others could be seen swatting a stray insect from time to time.
Mexico had the better of quality chances including Carlos Vela’s bicycle attempt that Montes had to dive to block with both hands eight minutes into first-half injury time, and a left-footed free kick by Andres Guardado that skipped off the crossbar in the 56th.
Montes kept the game within a goal in the 68th, extending fully to get his fingertips to a header by Franco that skipped just wide of the the right post.
El Salvador relied on the counter and had its best chance in the 13th minute on a 25-meter free kick by Eliseo Quintanilla that skipped wide of the near post. Julio Martinez scored a consolation goal for El Salvador in the 88th, driving a 30-meter free kick past goalkeeper Memo Ochoa.
Besides winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July, Mexico has won five straight World Cup qualifiers since a 2-1 loss at El Salvador on June 6. The loss was El Salvador’s fourth in its last five games, with its only victory at home against Costa Rica on September 9.

Mexico shock Costa Rica; USA, Honduras win
September 6, 2009

Mexico dealt Costa Rica a damaging home defeat while Honduras and the United States won to shake up the standings in 2010 World Cup qualifying in North and Central America and the Caribbean.
Mexico more than met the challenge of taking on Costa Rica on the artificial pitch at notoriously hostile Saprissa Stadium, winning 3-0 with goals from Giovanni Dos Santos, Guillermo Franco and Andres Guardado.
It was Mexico’s first away win in the six-nation final round of qualifying, while Costa Rica lost for the first time at home and fell from first place to fourth.
Dos Santos’s long-range, left-footed blast put Mexico ahead in the 45th minute. Dos Santos also played a key role in Mexico’s other two goals. He brought the ball into the area and passed to Franco, who fired home in the 61st minute. He also delivered the ball to Guardado for a shot from short range in the 70th.
The victory gave Mexico 12 points, the same as Costa Rica but ahead on goal difference. They trail Honduras and the United States, both on 13 points.
In San Pedro Sula, Honduras pummelled Trinidad and Tobago 4-1, while the United States rallied to beat El Salvador 2-1 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Carlos Pavon in the 19th and 27th minutes, Amado Guevara in the 61st and David Sauzo in the 82nd scored for Honduras, while Kerry Baptiste scored in the 85th for Trinidad and Tobago.
In Utah, Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore scored first-half goals to lift the United States to a 2-1 victory over El Salvador in Salt Lake City.
Christian Castillo had given El Salvador a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute with a header over US keeper Tim Howard.
But Dempsey equalized in the 41st when he headed in a free kick from Landon Donovan.
Donovan’s cross in first-half injury time also supplied Altidore, while Howard’s save of William Reyes’s point-blank shot in the 87th preserved the victory.
“The best part was the response when we went down,” US coach Bob Bradley said. “It’s never easy. You feel that pressure for a moment, but there was a real strong response from everybody on the field. That says a lot about what these guys are all about.”
The top three teams in the group advance directly to the World Cup finals in South Africa. The fourth-placed team plays off for a berth against the fifth-placed team from South America.
Saturday’s defeats left Trinidad and Tobago and El Salvador both on five points, and their hopes of qualifying all but extinguished.
Qualifying continues on Wednesday, when Mexico host Honduras, Trinidad and Tobago host the United States and El Salvador host Costa Rica.
“We’ve got three more tough games, but if we continue to get points we’re going to be all right,” Dempsey said.

Inspired Mexico defeats Costa Rica
September 6, 2009

SAN JOSE – Mexico moved closer to earning a berth in next year’s World Cup in South Africa with a 3-0 win against Costa Rica Saturday at Ricardo Saprissa stadium.
What is normally a loud and hostile environment in San Jose, Costa Rica, was mostly a silent venue after Mexico’s Giovanni Dos Santos, Guillermo Franco and Andres Guardado scored for El Tri.
Costa Rica fans made their way to the exit after Guardado sent in the final score of the night in the 68th minute, putting the match out of reach for the Ticos.
Guardado took a pass from Dos Santos during a two-on-one situation, broke away on a counter attack and beat Costa Rica goalkeeper Keilor Navas for the goal.
It was a score that ensured a needed three points for Mexico. The win helped El Tri move past Costa Rica, the previous leader in the group standings, into third place in the hexagonal round of qualifying.
El Tri sits behind Honduras and the United States who lead the group with 13 points. Mexico has 12 points with three matches remaining. Costa Rica also has 12, but stands behind El Tri with a minus-three goal differential compared to Mexico’s plus-two.
The top three teams receive an automatic berth, while the fourth-place team faces the fifth-place team from South America in a home and away playoff.
Mexico has won three qualifying matches in a row since losing to El Salvador in June to come out of a slump when it appeared El Tri would have trouble qualifying.
Coach Javier Aguirre’s team since has beaten teams considered to be the powerhouses of the region (the United States 2-1 last month and Costa Rica Saturday).
Aguirre can thank in part the fluid brand of soccer against Costa Rica for his team’s latest outing.
Mexico sealed the win – it’s first on the road in the hexagonal- with Guardado’s goal which came on a counter-attack.
Efrain Juarez helped create the play after breaking away from two defenders near the sideline. He sent a long pass from left to right across the field, finding a wide open Dos Santos.
Dos Santos added another assist in the 63rd minute when he fed Franco a soft pass to his left, beating Nava. Franco tapped in the ball with his left foot for a 2-0 lead.
Dos Santos not only added an assist but a goal of his own.
He gave El Tri a 1-0 halftime lead with a left-footed blast from about 25-yards out.
The 20-year-old striker sent a Cuauhtemoc Blanco cross-field pass from left to right into the lower-left corner of the net seconds before the halftime whistle.
Navas didn’t have a chance at a save.
Dos Santos’ score was his fifth with the senior team. He was part of the Under-17 World Cup championship team in 2005.
It was a goal that gave the match some life after a physical first half in which five players received yellow cards.
Both teams vied for control of the midfield with Mexico winning possession. But El Tri had three veterans shown yellow cards by referee Neal Brizan.
Mexico captain Gerardo Torrado, Ricardo Osorio and Blanco were booked.
Costa Rica ’s Cristian Oviedo and Armando Alonso also received yellow cards.
Alonso was booked in the 44th minute for elbowing Osorio in the face while both men fought for a ball in the air near Mexico’s penalty area.
Alonso got enough of Osorio that the Mexican defender’s right eye began to swell.
While some players exchanged blows and hard fouls, Mexico tried to find a way to break the scoreless tie by feeding forward Guillermo Franco the ball.
Franco, who was subbed by Guardado in the 68th minute, couldn’t find the back of the net despite a handful of looks at goal.
Perhaps the clearest came in the 21st minute when Franco failed to get a comfortable shot via a header off a Blanco floating pass in the penalty area.
Blanco found Franco sneaking behind the Ticos backline with the lobbed pass, but Franco’s soft header went straight into the hands of Navas.
Mexico ’s first chance at goal came in the 12th minute. Franco sent a header wide right off a Blanco corner kick.
Franco took another shot at goal four minutes later, sending a left-footed shot just inches wide to the left of Navas.
Blanco had a shot on goal of his own in the 25th minute. He took a Juarez pass from about 20 yards out.
Blanco, who helped generate most of Mexico’s attack, will miss El Tri’s next World Cup qualifier Wednesday against Honduras for yellow card accumulation.
Saturday’s match was also a rematch of a dramatic Gold Cup semifinal in July where Mexico squeezed past the Ticos on penalty kicks in Chicago .
Costa Rica has lost two qualifiers in a row. It also dropped a 2-0 decision to Mexico at Estadio Azteca in March in the team’s first meeting in hexagonal qualifying.

PENDING: Mexico seek vital victory over US at Azteca
August 12, 2009

Mexico will seek to continue its dominance over the United States at Azteca Stadium on Wednesday as the CONCACAF regional rivals clash in a 2010 World Cup qualifier.
Mexico go into the match lying in fourth place in the six-nation final group, from which three teams advance directly to the World Cup finals in South Africa. The fourth-placed team must play off against a team from South America for a berth.
Costa Rica leads North American regional qualifying with 12 points to 10 for the US squad. Honduras is third with Mexico in fourth.
Mexico received a massive morale boost heading into the match with a 5-0 victory over the United States in the Gold Cup final on July 26.
But that was against a young US side that didn’t include stars such as Landon Donovan.
On Wednesday US coach Bob Bradley will field a full-strength team as the Americans vie for a first-ever victory over Mexico at Azteca. They have only managed one draw there – a goalless draw in a 1997 World Cup qualifier.
“The difficulty is everything but the soccer,” Donovan said of the challenge of taking on Mexico at Azteca – where the altitude, poor air quality and fiercely partisan crowd of 100,000 all play a role.
“They use all of the outside influences to their advantage, but that?s not an excuse anymore for us. We?re not going to use it as an excuse.
“We?re not going for a point,” Donovan said. “We?re going there to win the game and we?re going to keep playing the way we?re playing.”
Donovan was referring to the form that has seen the United States win three of their five qualifiers to date, and reach the final of the Confederations Cup in South Africa.
Bradley has recalled an number of players who skipped the Gold Cup, including defender Oguchi Onyewu of AC Milan, Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey, Hull’s Jozy Altidore and the Los Angeles Galaxy’s Donovan.
Mexico coach Javier Aguirre’s squad includes his Gold Cup champions along with defender Carlos Salcido (PSV Eindhoven), Andres Guardado (Deportivo la Coruna) and veteran Cuauhtemoc Blanco (Chicago Fire).
Aguirre replaced Sven Goran Eriksson in April and after a defeat at El Salvador saw his side down Trinidad and Tobago in World Cup qualifying on June 10.
Despite Mexico’s struggles in this qualifying campaign, Aguirre insists his side have what it takes.
“It?s not a dark scenario,” he said. “Why the heck were we going to be out of the World Cup? They have to give us a chance. If there was one game left and we had to win and have two rivals lose, then I would say it was tough. But things are different. Things have improved.”
Costa Rica will be trying to maintain their spot atop the standings when they travel to Honduras, while Trinidad and Tobago host El Salvador.
Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda, who also turned to a young squad in the Gold Cup, has recalled his best to take on the Ticos in the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula.
David Suazo of Inter Milan is still out with a leg injury, but Rueda has the services of captain Amado Guevara from Toronto FC, Tottenham midfielder Wilson Palacios, Parma?s Julio de Leon, Carlo Costly and Carlos Pavon.
Honduras have seven points from five matches. While they are lying third, they are three points behind the United States, just one in front of Mexico and only two ahead of El Salvador – who will be seeking to gain ground at winless Trinidad and Tobago.

Mexico squad for USA clash includes 12 Gold Cup players
July 30, 2009
Mexico manager Javier Aguirre has selected 12 of the players that participate at this month’s CONCACAF Gold Cup, for the crucial World Cup qualifier with the United States on August 12.
The Mexicans desperately need a win in order to remain with a good chance of qualifying, while the US will be looking for their first ever victory at the Azteca stadium and revenge following the 5-0 defeat in the Gold Cup final.
The inclusion of goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is no surprise, and the selection of Giovani Dos Santos is not unexpected either. Others that were selected from the Gold Cup squad are Jose de Jesus Corona, Efrain Juarez, Jose Antonio Castro, Jonn Magallon, Israel Castro, Gerardo Torrado, Alberto Medina, Miguel Sabah, Carlos Vela and Guillermo Franco.
Aguirre also added Ricardo Osorio, Carlos Salcido, Rafael Marquez, Oscar Rojas, Aaron Galindo, Andres Guardado, Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Nery Castillo.
United States manager Bob Bradley isn’t expected to field any of the players that faced Mexico last Sunday.

Mexico ends skid, beats Trinidad 2-1 on Rojas goal
June 11, 2009

MEXICO CITY – Oscar Rojas scored with a 35-yard blast three minutes into the second half and gave Mexico a 2-1 victory over Trinidad & Tobago on Wednesday that revived El Tri’s World Cup hopes.
The win was Mexico’s second in five games in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying, and climbed it past El Salvador into fourth place with six points at the midpoint of the “hexagonal”. Trinidad remained winless with two points and in last, further damaging its chances of returning to the World Cup after becoming the smallest nation to qualify in 2006.
Three teams from CONCACAF will qualify automatically for the 32-team field in South Africa, while the fourth-placed team will earn a second chance in a two-leg playoff with the fifth-placed team from South America.
Mexico had won only three of its previous 11 games, and two of those were friendlies. It was playing its second match since Javier Aguirre replaced Sven-Goran Eriksson as manager and saw the return of Chicago Fire forward Cuatehmoc Blanco to the starting lineup since he announced his retirement from international play in September.
Rojas scored by volleying a ball dropped back into the midfield, running onto and striking a right-footed shot that just cleared under the crossbar and right post.
El Tri pressed from the opening kickoff and scored after only 59 seconds. Francisco Rodriguez sent a ball out of midfield to Nery Castillo just outside the area. Castillo turned and fed a pass between and behind Trinidad defenders Carlos Edwards and Martin Edwards to a streaking Guillermo Franco, who chipped it over sprawled goalkeeper Clayton Ince.
Mexico continued to dominate Trinidad for the next 10 minutes, forcing Ince to come off his line twice to thwart Israel Castro and blocking Franco on another foray in the area. Trinidad remained on the defensive for nearly the entire half, rarely creating anything dangerous and not getting a shot on goal until Hayden Tinto managed a slow rolling effort from distance in the 26th minute.
El Tri had another period of repeated danger late in the half, forcing Ince into a series of saves and having him watch Franco put an unmarked header just wide in the 39th.
But Tinto gave Trinidad life 21 seconds into injury time, intercepting a poor backpass from Andres Guardado at the top of Mexico’s defensive third and taking two touches before unleashing a right-footed blast one stride inside the 18 that eluded goalkeeper Oscar Perez into the upper right corner.
Mexico continued to be the far more dangerous team in the second half, creating numerous chances including a run by Blanco that Ince frustrated with a reaction save in the 78th minute.
Trinidad has three of its remaining five matches at home, but trails fifth-placed El Salvador by three points. It’s only win in seven games since the Caribbean Championship in December was a 1-0 friendly victory over Panama in March. It next will play El Salvador at home on August 12.
Mexico heads to next month’s CONCACAF Gold Cup before resuming World Cup qualifying on August 12 at home against arch-rival the United States.

U.S. extends home streak against Mexico 2-0 to open final round of World Cup qualifying
February 12, 2009
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Michael Bradley scored twice, once at the end of each half, to give the USA a 2-0 win over Mexico Wednesday in the first match of the final round of World Cup qualifying.
“The big games are the ones you want to play,” said Bradley, son of USA coach Bob Bradley. “Before the game, I looked at everyone in the locker room and I knew that they wanted to play.”
The victory gives the USA an early advantage in the “hexagonal” and extends the Americans’ unbeaten streak at home against El Tri, with its ninth victory in 11 games since 1999.
It also extended the U.S.’s unbeaten streak against CONCACAF opponents at home to 51 matches, including 41 victories, and 14 games in World Cup qualifiers.
Trailing 1-0, Mexico’s hopes faded further in the 65th minute when defender and captain Rafael Marquez received a red card in the 65th minute for colliding with USA goalkeeper Tim Howard on a high ball.
Both teams had their chances early, but the Americans began to control play towards the end of the opening half.
“We didn’t get our best performance from our players, but they knew it (winning) had something to do with Mexico and the conditions,” Bob Bradley said. “Our collective sense of how to deal with things was good.”
Michael Bradley capitalized on a bounding ball to open the scoring in the 43rd minute before a mixed crowd of 23,776 at Columbus Crew Stadium.
DaMarcus Beasley’s corner was headed back into the middle by Landon Donovan. Mexico goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez saved Oguchi Onyewu’s header, but Bradley was able to tap in the rebound with his right foot.
Michael Bradley added the exclamation point in second half injury time when Sanchez misplayed his shot from the edge of the penalty area.
The weather looked like it would be a factor as it was in the first battle of La Guerra Fria (Cold War) in February 2001. Though the temperature wasn’t as cold, torrential rain and high winds hit the area hard drenching the field. By game time, the rain had dissipated, but the gale-force wind remained a factor.
“When the wind is like that, it’s important for the team to move together,” Bob Bradley said. “There can’t be any gaps and we have to keep the ball down as much as possible. We focused on the way we worked as a team.”
The U.S. will resume its effort to qualify for a sixth straight World Cup when it travels to San Salvador to take on El Salvador on March 28. Mexico, which has only one victory in its last seven matches, will try to end its poor form when it returns home to host Costa Rica at Estadio Azteca.
Coming into the match, Mexico was struggling, winless in its last three World Cup qualifiers. And it was missing Carlos Vela and Fernando Arce due to suspension and Andres Guardado because of injury.
“I believe in my coaching ability,” Mexico coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said. “We must continue to work hard with a view to getting better down the road. The team has character and will do well in the future. In the future, I plan to bring in more players from Europe.”
Considerable hype surrounded the build-up to the match with former U.S. international defender Alexi Lalas telling a TV interviewer that he “hated” El Tri. Mexican newspaper La Reforma countered with a promotion that sold voodoo dolls in the form of a USA player.
The result was the third straight 2-0 victory for the United States over Mexico in Columbus – all in World Cup qualifying, starting with the 2001 match.
The USA extended its unbeaten streak at the home of the Columbus Crew to eight matches, including five victories.
