Panathinaikos extend lead in Greek league
January 7, 2010

Panathinaikos beat Ergotelis 4-1 to extend their lead in the Greek league, while second-placed Olympiakos suffered a 1-2 defeat by AEK Athens.
Leaders had a bad start in their home match with Ergotelis as Michalis Fragoulakis put them one goal down after eight minutes.
But Djibril Cisse levelled in minute 26 and Giorgios Karagounis completed the turn-around just before half time. Cisse then added a third six minutes after the hour and Sebastian Leto made it 4-1 near the full time whistle.
Olympiakos allowed the gap with arch rivals Panathinaikos to grow from two to five points with a 1-2 defeat by AEK.
Avram Papadopoulos did put the defending champions in the lead after 27 minutes but two goals from Ignacio Scocco, one in the 33rd and one in the 40th, allowed AEK to take three valuable points from this derby.

Panathinaikos cruise past PAS Giannina
December 20, 2009

Athens giants Panathinaikos put pressure on arch rivals Olympiakos with a comfortable 4-0 win over PAS Giannina on Saturday.
Although the first half went by without goals, the second showed a much more precise Panathinaikos with Djibril Cisse opening the scoring from the penalty spot in the 50th minute.
The former Liverpool striker went on to add a second in minute 76, and Loukas Vyntra made it 3-0 four minutes later.
The fourth and final goal came from Lazaros Christodopoulos in the 89th minute.
Panathinaikos are now in first place, but might have to make way for Olympiakos again. The defending champions play an away match to Aris Saloniki on Sunday.

Panathinaikos too strong for Atromitos
December 7, 2009

Panathinaikos remained near the top of the Greek Super League thanks to a 3-1 win over Atromitos on Sunday.
All pressure was on Panathinaikos as main rivals Olympiakos had already won their match at Xanthi a day earlier. In order to remain at just one point from the leaders, ‘Pana’ needed a victory over Atromitos.
And it was Kostas Katsouranis to inspire the Athens outfit with goals in the 6th and 33rd minutes.
Paschalis Melissas pulled one back in the last minute before the break, but the guests had their situation complicated by a red card to Marcelo Sarmiento on the hour.
Former Liverpool striker Djibril ended all doubts, netting for 3-1 in the 90th minute.

Panathinaikos goalie says he was hit by air gun pellets in derby
December 2, 2009

Panathinaikos Athens goalie Alexandros Tzorvas Tuesday told a Piraeus prosecutor that he was the target of air gun pellets during Sunday’s derby match at Olympiakos Piraeus.
Tzorvas, who is also the Greek national team goalkeeper, told the prosecutor that he was hit several times and showed marks on his body and presented medical reports.
He said he had informed referee Anastasios Kakos about the attacks but that the official did not record the incidents in his match report.
The prosecutor has requested Olympiakos to provide security camera footage in order to find the culprit.
Panathinaikos on Tuesday sent a detailed letter of protest to the Greek league about the incident which also included a penknife being thrown on the pitch as well as numerous flares.
The start of the match was delayed for more than an hour as unruly Olympiakos fans kept the Panathinaikos team bus from arriving on time as about 300 of them clashed with riot-trained police outside the Karaiskakis Stadium where the derby was held.
The league is expected to punish Olympiakos for the incidents with a heavy fine and possibly forcing the team to play their next home match behind closed doors.
Olympiakos won the match 2-0 and moved ahead of Panathinaikos by one point at the top of the standings.

Reina “one of the best in the world” says Benitez
November 30, 2009

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez labelled Jose Reina “one of the best keepers in the world” after the Spain international inspired his side to victory in the Merseyside derby.
With Liverpool leading 1-0, Reina produced a stunning stop to claw away Tim Cahill’s header before denying Marouane Fellaini with the follow up.
It was a key moment in the game, Kuyt going on to double his side’s lead soon afterwards, as Liverpool bounced back from their premature exit from the Champions League.
“We have seen that he is a top class keeper,” said Benitez, after his side climbed into fifth spot in the table.
“When we signed him we knew that we were getting a very good keeper. For me he is one of the best in the world.”
Dirk Kuyt also praised Reina as Liverpool recorded their first clean sheet victory away from home in the Premier League since last season.
“He is one of the best in the world,” said the Holland international. “He really helped us out today.”
When Liverpool beat Manchester United last month, Liverpool followed it up with a double defeat in London. After crashing out of the Carling Cup at Arsenal, Benitez’s side then lost at Fulham.
Benitez is now urging his players to learn from that and use their latest victory as a springboard to kick on.
“It’s always important win games in a row,” added Benitez.
“We have some days to go before we go to Blackburn so we will prepare like we always do.
“This was a really important win for us because this was always going to be a difficult game.
“We are higher in the table now, everyone is happier and we’ll see if we can go on from here.”
Everton manager David Moyes thought his side deserved more from the game.
Diniyar Bilyaletdinov spurned a glorious chance to make it 1-1 in the first half before Reina’s heroics in the second half.
Everton are just three points above the relegation zone after their third straight Premier League defeat.
“My players worked extremely hard and deserved more than they got,” said Moyes, whose side visit Greece to face AEK Athens in the Europa League on Wednesday.
“Liverpool had one chance in the first half and in the main we kept them quiet.”

Panathinaikos drop points in Greece
November 23, 2009

Panathinaikos failed to take further distance from Olympiakos on Sunday, as the Athens side were held to a 1-1 draw by Asteras Tripolis.
As Olympiakos drew 2-2 with PAS Giannina a day earlier, Panathinaikos knew that a win over Asteras would allow them to extend their lead to four points.
But 61 minutes had been played at the Spyros Louis Olympic Stadium of Athens when Shikoze Udoji put the visiting side in the lead.
An equaliser from Djibril Cisse in the 74th minute did limit the damage, but Panathinaikos failed to find the target a second time.
‘Pana’ remain in the lead with 29 points from 11 games, two points more than Olympiakos.

Panathinaikos held by Kavala
October 19, 2009

Panathinaikos are no longer the only leaders in the Greek league, following Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Kavala.
Kavala initially seemed to head for a surprise result against Panathinaikos, with goals from Benjamin Onwuachi in the 21st and 43rd minutes.
But the experienced Kostas Katsouranis gave ‘Pana’ new hope in minute 57 and former Liverpool forward Djibril Cisse eventually saved the day for the visitors near the full time whistle.
Panathinaikos now have to share their lead with Olympiakos; both have 19 points from seven games.
AEK Athens beat Panthrakikos 3-2, with goals from Daniel Majstorovic, Zeljko Djokic (own goal) and Ignacio Scocco. Bedi Buval and Bertrand Robert scored for the guests.

Celtic held in Euro grudge match as Everton, Fulham win
October 2, 2009

Celtic’s Europa League ambitions suffered another blow on Thursday when they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Rapid Vienna in a match which brought back uncomfortable, ugly memories.
Celtic, who had lost their opening Group C match at Hapoel Tel Aviv, slipped behind after just three minutes at Parkhead when a mistake by Stephen McManus gifted Nikica Jelavic a goal.
Australia’s Scott McDonald levelled in the 20th minute but Celtic could not find the winner as the Scottish giants slumped to the foot of the table following Hamburg’s 4-2 win over Hapoel Tel-Aviv.
Twenty-five years ago, Celtic and Rapid clashed in the Cup Winners’ Cup. Rapid won 3-1 at home before Celtic took a 3-0 lead in the second leg.
But Rapid player Rudi Weinhofer collapsed to the ground, claiming to have been hit by a missile thrown from the terraces before UEFA ordered a third game to be played.
Current Rapid boss Peter Pacult scored the only goal of the match which was played at Old Trafford to take his side through to the next round.
“I think we did enough to get the three points over the 90 minutes,” said Celtic manager Tony Mowbray.
“And yet, in the last three (home) games, we’ve shot ourselves in the foot.”
Meanwhile, Everton resisted a valiant effort by BATE Borisov to leave Belarus with a 2-1 win which put them top of Group I with six points while English Premier League rivals Fulham top Group E after a 1-0 win over Basel.
Everton were a goal down by the 16th minute in Minsk as Dmitri Likhtarovich pounced on a loose ball 35 metres out and smashed it into the top corner past Tim Howard.
Everton equalised through Marouane Fellaini in the 68th minute before Tim Cahill grabbed the winner 10 minutes later.
“It was a really pleasing result considering the number of players who were not available,” said Everton boss David Moyes, whose squad was missing 10 first-teamers.
“We were resilient and that allowed us to get the victory. They scored an excellent goal but we regrouped and managed to get the goals we needed.”
Danny Murphy struck the only goal in the 57th minute at Craven Cottage for Fulham converting a fine pass from Andrew Johnson.
Elsewhere, Lazio beat Levski Sofia 4-0 in Bulgaria.
Brazilian midfielder Matuzalem opened the scoring in the 22nd minute and by half-time the visitors had doubled their advantage thanks to Italian striker Mauro Zarate.
Lazio scored goals in the 67th and 73 minutes through Mourad Meghni and Tommaso Rocchi.
FC Salzburg punched above their weight to beat tricky Spaniards Villarreal 2-0 while Ukrainians Shakhtar Donetsk thumped Partizan Belgrade of Serbia 4-1.
AEK Athens, PSV Eindhoven and Werder Bremen also won at home.

Olympiakos beat Panionios for 14th consecutive time
September 26, 2009

Olympiakos jumped back to the top of the Greek Super League, at least for a day, following a 1-0 win over Panionios this Saturday.
The only goal of the match, played at the Stadio Georgios Karaiskaki, was scored by Moroccan midfielder Jaouad Zairi in the 17th minute.
The victory was Olympiakos’ 14th in a row over Panionios, who haven’t beaten the Piraeus outfit since 2002.
Olympiakos move into first place with 13 points from five games, but may drop back to second after Panathinaikos’ game with AEK Athens on Sunday.

Saha´s double gets Everton back on track
September 20, 2009

Everton forward Louis Saha made up for his Europa League red card as the French star’s double-strike inspired a 3-0 win over Blackburn on Sunday in their Premier League match.
Saha was harshly sent off in the final moments of his side’s 4-0 Europa League win over AEK Athens on Thursday after an off the ball clash with defender Juanfran.
But the former Manchester United player took out his frustrations on Blackburn to continue his prolific start to the campaign and lift Everton out of the relegation zone.
Nigerian defender Joseph Yobo was also on the scoresheet at Goodison Park as Everton won for just the second time in the Premier League this season.
Everton boss David Moyes made three changes from the side that beat AEK Athens, with Dutch defender John Heitinga making his home debut.
Russian winger Diniyar Bilyaletdinov was out with a groin strain while Jo and Dan Gosling dropped to the bench to allow Saha and Leon Osman into the starting line-up.
This has been Everton’s worse start to a league season since 2004 and they set about correcting that unwanted statistic.
Leon Osman saw a shot on the turn deflected just wide, before Steven Pienaar’s cross was headed onto the roof of the net by Saha.
It didn’t take Saha long to make amends as he struck in the 22nd minute.
Leighton Baines fired in a free-kick from the left and Saha arrived at the near post to turn the ball past Paul Robinson for his fifth goal of the season.
The hosts almost scored again a minute before the break when Osman’s glancing header from Saha’s cross went wide.
Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard saved smartly from El-Hadji Diouf’s right-footed effort in the 51st minute but three minutes later Everton had their second goal.
Marouane Fellaini was the creator, crossing from the right and teeing up Louis Saha to head home his second goal.
Saha turned the provider in the 58th minute when he headed Baines’s cross at goal. Robinson was able to parry it away but the ball only made it as far as Yobo, who tapped home to put the result beyond doubt.
Moyes allowed Saha to take a standing ovation from the crowd as he was replaced by Jo with 18 minutes to play.
