Santa Cruz set for month out injured
January 18, 2010

Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz is set to be out of action for a month after his latest comeback lasted just four minutes.
The Paraguayan’s return from a calf injury during Saturday’s 2-0 defeat by Everton – City’s first loss under manager Roberto Mancini – was a short-lived affair as he suffered a recurrence of the same problem that caused him to miss three matches over the Christmas period.
Santa Cruz, signed for 18 million pounds in pre-season by former City boss Mark Hughes from the Welshman’s old club, Blackburn Rovers, is not expected to need surgery.
But if City’s initial assessment is correct, Santa Cruz will miss both legs of the League Cup semi-final with Manchester United, Sunday’s FA Cup fourth round tie at Scunthorpe and the Blues’ next three Premier League matches.
With Emmanuel Adebayor on indefinite compassionate leave following the gun attack on the Togo team bus at the African Nations Cup in Angola, Mancini could recall Benjani Mwaruwari up front for the first leg against United at Eastlands on Tuesday.
Meanwhile Mancini is set to go into the latest Manchester derby without new signing Patrick Vieira.
The France midfielder, and former Arsenal captain, has been unavailable since joining from Inter Milan after suffering a calf injury in his final match for the Italian giants.
“It is better for us, and for him, that he can go and be ready in a week or 10 days,” Mancini said.
“It is better that we do not take risks in this situation. I would like it that when Patrick does come back he can play until the end of the season,” the Italian added.

Score predictions come out of the freezer
January 15, 2010

Last week’s snow-show in all but three of the games means there’s been very little movement on the scores front, at least here at Reuters Soccer Blog Towers.
Premier League grounds may be as sludgy as Dutch pea soup but at least they’re fit for purpose once more and as long as the thaw continues we should get a full programme again this weekend. About time too. Here are the weekend’s games:

Big freeze truncates English Premiership programme
January 9, 2010

The freezing conditions sweeping Britain have forced the postponement of seven matches in the English Premiership this weekend with Sunday’s game between West Ham and Wolves the latest to go.
Earlier, Saturday’s match between Wigan and Aston Villa was also called off after under-soil heating at Wigan’s DW Stadium failed Friday and engineers were unable to fix the problem by the time referee Stuart Atwell made an early morning pitch inspection Saturday at the north-west ground.
Atwell deemed the surface unplayable, following overnight frost.
Friday saw several postponements, with Saturday’s scheduled Premier League matches between Burnley and Stoke, Fulham and Portsmouth, Hull and Chelsea and Sunderland and Bolton, as well as Sunday’s fixture between Liverpool and Tottenham, called off.
In all five cases the pitches were playable but concerns over issues such as iced-up streets surrounding grounds which pose a safety risk for supporters led clubs, who generally follow advice from local police in making a decision, to call off the games.
Now the only two Premier League matches still set to be played on Saturday are Birmingam’s home game against champions Manchester United, where a win for the visitors would see them leapfrog leaders Chelsea at the top of the table, and Arsenal’s fixture against Everton.
Monday’s encounter between Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers was still unaffected by Saturday afternoon.
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said: “We are devastated because the club has worked so hard in these freak weather conditions to make the area surrounding the stadium safe.
“The pitch has never been the problem, until now.”
With much of Britain blanketed in thick snow, almost half this weekend’s fixtures in England’s lower divisions have been called off and only a handful of matches have survived in Scotland.
All English Premier League clubs are required to have under-soil heating.
But some question what is the point of installing the expensive systems, which make grounds playable in conditions that would once have been deemed unsafe, if matches are still going to be postponed for reasons beyond the clubs’ control, as has happened with most of this weekend’s fixtures.
Clubs are increasingly keen to make early decisions on call-offs for fear some supporters may have already embarked on long journeys, as happened to Bolton fans who had travelled to London for a midweek match at Arsenal, only for the game to be postponed in late afternoon.
Nevertheless, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger feels matches are being called off too easily.
“Personally I know only the inside of the stadiums – I don’t know the surroundings well enough, but I must say it is the price we pay for living in a society where everybody wants 100 percent security,” Wenger said Friday.
“Nobody accepts any risk any more and everybody is always guided by fear,” the Frenchman added.
“If one of 60,000 people has an accident, you feel very guilty and nobody accepts anymore that the slightest insecurity could exist in our society and that is why the games are postponed when there is no real need for it.”

Mancini wants Inter repeat at City
December 21, 2009

Roberto Mancini wants to repeat the success he enjoyed as a manager with Inter Milan at Manchester City.
Mancini was installed in the Eastlands hotseat when the Premier League side sacked former manager Mark Hughes just hours after the club’s 4-3 win at home to Sunderland on Saturday.
Speaking to City’s website ahead of his first press conference as the club’s manager here on Monday, the 45-year-old Mancini said he saw parallels between Inter and City.
“I hope history repeats itself,” he said.
“I am proud to get the job because City is a good club with good players. Manchester is similar to Milan in its football passion,” the Italian added.
“In Milan there are two big teams there fighting for supremacy and silverware and here it is the same. I like the challenge of that.”
Mancini guided Inter to three straight Serie A titles between 2005 and 2008.
He has installed the experienced Brian Kidd, a former Manchester United and Manchester City striker who was a coach at United under Sir Alex Ferguson, as his assistant.
Mancini’s backroom staff will also feature compatriot Ivan Carminati, who was England’s fitness coach under their Italian manager Fabio Capello.
“I know Brian, he is a boss in English football,” Mancini said of the former Blackburn Rovers manager.
“I know his record as a top player for City, Everton and (Manchester) United. He was a striker, I was a striker; we share the same football philosophy. He has also has great coaching experience. I am sure we will gel very well.”
Saturday’s win left City, who haven’t won a major trophy since 1976, sixth in the table.
But a run of two wins from 11 league matches wasn’t good enough for the club’s Abu Dhabi-based owner Sheikh Mansour, who has spent some 200 million pounds on bringing players to the club.

Warm yourselves up with our hot predictions league
December 18, 2009
I’m freezing at the top of a mountain watching skiing in northern Italy (where in fact the natives all speak German) and I hear it’s shivering cold in the UK and other parts of Europe too.
What better way to warm ourselves up than our Premier League predictions competition. Admittedly our panel have not exactly been red hot of late (see the midweek matches) but some of our outside contributors have outshone us all.
Not an obvious standout game this weekend but I guess Gianfranco Zola’s struggling West Ham against his former side Chelsea is an interesting one so we’ll make that our double pointer. Remember, one point for a correct result and five for getting the score spot on.
Please play along in the comments below and don’t be put off about having to register, we are not MI5. I’ll add in our panel’s predictions just as soon as my frozen fingers thaw out.

Spanish side hit by swine flu
October 30, 2009

Thirteen players from Spanish outfit Betis have contracted the H1N1 flu virus, prompting the second division side’s medical staff to request Thursday the postponement of Sunday’s meeting with Villarreal B.
“The symptoms correspond to the H1N1 strain. Almost the whole team is affected,” said official Tomas Calero.
Calero added the medical staff were requesting that training be suspended for at least three days.
Betis are the first Spanish side known to be afflicted by the H1N1 flu virus but concerns have increasingly been raised about its possible latent presence in other leagues in recent days.
English Premiership side Blackburn Rovers have been affected by a bout of swine flu with three players, as well as staff members, diagnosed.
Nearby rivals Bolton also revealed several of their players have contracted the illness.
And last week’s match in the French first division between Paris Saint Germain and Marseille was called off after three PSG players were found to be ill.

Domestic duties for Celtic after Gunners blow
August 22, 2009

After the glamour of their midweek Champions League match Celtic get back to domestic duty this weekend when they take on St Johnstone at Parkhead.
The Old Firm side went down to a 2-0 defeat to English giants Arsenal in the Champions League play-off first leg on Tuesday.
Now new Hoops boss Tony Mowbray must lift his side for the visit of newly-promoted St Johnstone as they continue on their quest to regain the Scottish Premier League crown from arch-rivals Rangers.
A dominant showing at Pittodrie against Aberdeen on the opening day of the season saw Celtic rack up a 3-1 victory, a performance Mowbray will want his side to repeat.
New signing Landry Nguemo has been in impressive form since joining the Hoops on a loan deal from French club Nancy in the summer.
And while all the talk in Glasgow surrounds the club’s return tie at the Emirates Stadium next week the Cameroonian midfielder says the players were only looking to the match against St Johnstone.
“We were unlucky in the game against Arsenal with the way we lost the two goals but now we must focus on the game against St Johnstone,” said Nguemo.
“Everyone is talking about Arsenal but the players all want to win the championship, so for us this game against St Johnstone is no different. In your head, you have to treat every game the same. It can’t be viewed differently.
“We want to win the league and to do that, you have to focus on every game.”
Celtic have been boosted by the news captain Stephen McManus made his return from injury in a workout against Blackburn Rovers this week, but the game against St Johnstone could be too soon for him.
Saints manager Derek McInnes will be without defender Kevin Rutkiewicz for the trip to Celtic Park but will have taken confidence from his side’s strong performance in their SPL opening day draw with Motherwell.
On Sunday, champions Rangers face a difficult away match at Tynecastle against Hearts.
Walter Smith could hand Kevin Thomson a starting place after he came on as a substitute in last weekend’s 4-1 defeat of Falkirk. The midfielder has been out since November with knee ligament damage and is in need of match fitness.
Kirk Broadfoot, Nacho Novo and Maurice Edu miss out with injuries while Sasa Papac and Kyle Lafferty are suspended.
Hearts boss Csaba Laszlo will be without captain Michael Stewart after he picked up a red card in their match against Dundee United.
New Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee hopes his team can kick-start their season with a win away to Hamilton.
The Dons have had an awful start to their campaign with embarrassing defeats to Czech side Sigma Olomouc followed by their opening day humbling at home to Celtic.
Portuguese striker Marco Paixoa joins twin Flavio in the Hamilton squad for the game after signing on at New Douglas Park this week.
Motherwell host Kilmarnock at Fir Park. Killie were many critics choice for the drop but 3-0 win over Hamilton sees them sit in second.
New Motherwell manager Jim Gannon’s introduction to the SPL was a 2-2 draw with St Johnstone and will be looking for his first home win.
John Hughes takes his Hibernian side to face old club Falkirk in Saturday’s early kick-off match. The Bairns were battered by Rangers last week while Hibs picked up a 2-1 win over St Mirren. St Mirren host a Dundee United side boosted by a 2-0 win over Hearts thanks to new signing Danny Cadamarteri’s double.
Fixtures (1500 GMT, unless otherwise stated)
Saturday
Falkirk v Hibernian (1230)
Celtic v St Johnstone

Can Manchester City win the Premier League?
August 4, 2009

Fuelled by millions of petro-dollars from the apparently bottomless pockets of their Abu Dhabi owners Manchester City have spent the summer accumulating what is beginning to look, on paper anyway, a squad that will challenge for the title.
Significantly, the players bought by manager Mark Hughes are tried and tested in the Premier League which augurs wells for City’s chances of shaking up the established pecking order in English football.
Opposing managers must have watched with a growing sense of awe and no doubt a little envy as Roque Santa Cruz (Blackburn Rovers), Carlos Tevez (Manchester United), Emmanuel Adebayor (Arsenal) joined to form a formidable looking strike force while defender Kolo Toure (Arsenal) was recruited to beef up the back four and England midfielder Gareth Barry signed from Aston Villa.
Consider the likes of Robinho, Craig Bellamy, Shaun-Wright Phillips, Wayne Bridge and Micah Richards, who were all part of last season’s team, and City already boast arguably the strongest squad in the Premier League with the transfer window nowhere near closing.
But can they win the league? Are the new recruits going to bridge the 40-point gap between champions Manchester United and City last season or eben the 20-odd extra points they will need to challenge for a Champions League spot.
Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill certainly thinks so.
“City might not be favourites to win the league, but they should be,” O’Neill said last week. “They have as good a chance as anybody of winning it.”
Vast riches are no guarantee to silverware but as Chelsea proved when Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003, factor in a coherent transfer policy and an astute coach and anything is possible.
It did not happen immediately at Stamford Bridge and it wasn’t until a year into the Abramovich reign that Claudio Ranieri was sacked, Jose Mourinho recruited and Chelsea won the league for the first time since 1955. Another title followed as Chelsea became the dominant force in English football for a while.
Man City are a similar size club to Chelsea, both in terms of support and history.
They have not won the league since 1968 and you have to go back to 1976 for their last major domestic silverware when they won the League Cup.
Should they fail to end that long wait this season Hughes would almost certainly pay with his job. There can be no excuses from Hughes this season. He has been given all he wants and no manager will be under the spotlight more than the Welshman.
It would be a major surprise if City are not challenging in or around the top four before long this season, though. Arsenal look particularly vulnerable to the new threat from the North West, while even champions Manchester United, minus star player Cristiano Ronaldo, will be keeping a close watch across the city.
Buying success may not be popular, unless you support the team in question, but it has been done before and watching City’s progress will be fascinating this season.
Just spare a thought for the other clubs who clawed their way to the fringes of the top four in recent seasons such as Villa and Everton.
O’Neill summed up the mood. “I’m deflated by it,” he said last week. “You think, ‘Well, you got quite close last year and suddenly another club has just stepped over you’. It kind of punctures you.”
So what do you think? Are Man City title contenders?

Kalinic snubs Portsmouth as he signs for Blackburn
August 4, 2009

Croatian international striker Nikola Kalinic signed for English Premier League club Blackburn Rovers on Monday for 7.5million euros from Hajduk Split, the selling club announced on its website.
The 21-year-old had been a target for Blackburn’s rivals Portsmoth but opted instead to reject their overtures as Hajduk accepted a club record fee.
“I can at last focus on football,” said Kalinic, who was first capped in May 2008 having been at Hajduk since 2007.
“I want to begin training with my new team as soon as possible and get into top form,” added Kalinic, who scored 38 goals in the Croatian league.

Rangers accept Birmingham bid for Ferguson
July 16, 2009

Scottish champions Rangers on Wednesday accepted a bid from English Premier League newcomers Birmingham City for veteran midfielder Barry Ferguson.
The 31-year-old will discuss terms with Birmingham, who are coached by former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, on the deal which is believed to be worth a million pounds.
Ferguson has already played in the English top flight with Blackburn Rovers.
