Higuain set to sign new contract
February 8, 2010

Gonzalo Higuain is close to signing a new contract at Real Madrid.
The Argentine striker has an excellent season and scored a goal to seal the triumph over Espanyol (3-0), on Saturday. Real is set to reward the 22-year-old forward with a new, improved long-term deal.
Higuain has been one of Real’s most consistent performers over the past two seasons, and this season he has netted 14 goals in all competitions.
AS reports that the club chose to offer the Argentina international improved terms to ensure parity of earnings between him and colleague striker Karim Benzema.
Sporting Director Jorge Valdano has commenced negotiations with Higuain’s representatives, and it’s reckoned that both parties will be in a position to make an announcement over the next few days.

Upset Mourinho: ‘Nobody respects Ferrara’
January 29, 2010

Jose Mourinho’s Internazionale reached the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia on Thursday night, knocking out Juventus: 2-1. Afterwards, the Portuguese manager backed under fire Juve coach Ciro Ferrara who is expected to be axed on Friday after a dismal run.
“We are men, we have families,” said Mourinho to support his colleague. “It’s not nice all this talk of every other coach.
“I don’t like the atmosphere around him.
“Ferrara deserves respect. If the club decides to make a change, we know that is part of our job, but at least while we are still on the bench and working we deserve respect.
“Right now nobody is giving Ferrara respect. Nobody. But I respect him.”
Juventus president Jean-Claude Blanc didn’t exclude a dismissal of Ferrara. “We are very disappointed, as we have failed at another of our objectives for the season,” said Blanc after the match against Internazionale.
“Tomorrow (Friday) we will make a decision and when we have made it, we will let you know.”
Ferrara remained calm as usual after another setback. “I have not been told of anything. I will be conducting Juventus training tomorrow, as per usual,” Ferrara stated.
Juve goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon rued the Bianconeri’s ‘unlucky period’. “We wanted to win this evening, and did not deserve to lose,” the Italy international said.
“But Inter also did not deserve to lose.
“Unfortunately, the team has been unlucky in this period, but we are trying to rectify this.”
The 32-year-old goalie picked up a red card in last Saturday’s match against Roma (1-2 loss) and will miss the game against Lazio this weekend.

Red Bulls’ Stammler gets good word from Haiti
January 28, 2010

With all of the bad news coming out of Haiti the past two weeks, New York Red Bulls midfielder Seth Stammler recently received good news on not one, but two fronts.
Personally and professionally, Stammler received a text message from Gerald Oriol, his main contact in Haiti for his Sporting Chance Foundation, saying he was alive and well.
The other good news also came out of Port-of-Spain. Not only did the water well the foundation created for citizens survive the earthquake, it was being utilized by more people than Stammler and his foundation members could have imagined.
Stammler said Oriol texted: “he was well and his family was well.”
“He had just been spending the last two days burying bodies, trying to get that taking care of so disease wasn’t spreading and they wouldn’t have that additional worry to be thinking about,” Stammler said recently.
Stammler was quite relieved.
“It’s one thing being a friend and a colleague,” he said. “So we were worried about him. Selfishly, he is a big part of our efforts at the Sporting Chance Foundation. Without him, we’d have to start back at square one. So we are definitely thankful he made it and is going to be working with us.”
Oriol, who is handicapped and is wheelchair bound, works for the local water company.
“He is so connected in Haiti,” said Red Bulls vice president of communications Andy McGowan, who traveled with Stammler to Haiti in December. “He knows how to get things done.”
Stammler also was happy to hear the well was working and being used during the crisis.
“It’s nerve-wracking because we just finished in September,” he said. “They really started using it in October and three months later they have a tragic earthquake. It’s pretty nerve-wracking to think that our efforts went for naught. It survived.”
Port-au-Prince citizens usually have to pay one gourd — the equivalent of 2 1/2 cents — for a 5-gallon bucket of water.
“Right now we just want to help out,” Stammler said. “Everyone gets it for free right now. Just want to make sure everyone gets the proper hydration to get through this tough time.”
Stammler was impressed how popular the well was when he visited Port-au-Prince in December.
“The well had a line 15 deep of young adolescent girls waiting to get their five-gallon bucket of water,” he said. “I would be interested to see what it is now. I’m sure there are other people coming from other neighborhoods to get their hands on some good water. (It’s) definitely a proud thing for the Sporting Chance Foundation. I think it re-energizes us to do more wells. They’re kind of costly. But I think it just proves the importance they have it in the community.”
An average well costs about $20,000 to build, although the foundation was able to get one dug for $10,000.
The foundation (www.sportingchancefoundation.org) has raised more than $10,000. “Which is pretty good for us,” Stammler said.
In between training with the Red Bulls and traveling to La Manga,Spain, for two weeks of pre-season preparation and running the foundation, Stammler has managed to watch some Haiti updates and news.
“My days have been long and busy, just dealing with fundraising,” he said. “There’s a lot of different organizations trying to get involved that want to do their part from schools in the New York City area to soccer clubs in Columbus, Ohio.”
Stammler said the foundation has received “very generous e-mails from people who want to help out in some way. We’re trying to extend our network right now and try to get people involved who we wouldn’t have access to otherwise. It’s all going to the same place, which is the most important thing. We’re all pulling together to make a difference.”
Haitian soccer suffered the most devastating loss in its history when 30 members of the country’s football federation died during the earthquake. An undetermined number of players also perished. The dead, which died at the federation’s offices in Port-au-Prince, included administrators, referees, coaches, players, office staff and medical personnel, Caribbean Football Union senior vice president Horace Burrell said.
Among those killed were coach Jean Yves Labaze, who directed Haiti to the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2007, and Alix Avin, a well-known professional club coach
“Words cannot describe what I have seen in Haiti,” Burrell said in a report to FIFA vice president and CONCACAF president Jack Warner. “It is heartbreaking.
“The situation down there is grim, it’s frightening and it is going to take a very long time to turn things around,” Burrell added. “They will need the help of not only the Caribbean, but the entire world, to help them rebuild.
“You have hundreds of thousands of people milling around aimlessly, not knowing what to do, not knowing where the next meal is coming from, or where they are going to get any water; all of whom appear hopeless and very sad.”
Burrell met with Haitian Football Federation president Dr. Yves Jean Bart, who was the lone survivor at the organization’s headquarters.

Determined Ferrara: ‘I think my job is not at risk’
January 11, 2010

Ciro Ferrara said he believed he would stay in his job after Juventus’ latest setback against Milan. On Sunday, the Juventus manager saw how his team got thrashed by their competitors from Milan.
Juventus were stunned by Milan: goals from Allessandro Nesta and Ronaldinho (2) secured a wide victory for the Rossoneri. Table topper Internazionale now has a twelve point lead over their rivals from Turin. However, Ferrara has no thoughts of quitting his job.
“I am not made like that. My way is to try to change things.
“I sincerely think my job is not at risk. Of course we are in a negative period but it’s not for me to make the decisions. Any decisions will be accepted.”
The Bianconeri spent heavily in the close season but Brazilians Diego and Felipe Melo have been big flops so far.
A flurry of injuries, including a knock to midfielder Christian Poulsen on Sunday which could delay Tiago’s planned loan move to Atletico Madrid, have also not helped Ferrara.
“I obviously understand the disappointment of the fans.
“Our aim is to try to find the enthusiam there was at the start of the season,” added Ferrara.
His Milan colleague Leonardo was satisfied with his team and backed Ferrara.
“It was a difficult game, even if it didn’t seem like that,” the Brazilian coach said.
“Juve are in a situation similar to us in October, it seems like everything is going wrong. I say to Ciro that it can sort itself out.”

Scotland boss Levein gets scout wish
January 8, 2010

Scotland’s new manager, Craig Levein, will have a scout to assist him after the Scottish Football Association (SFA) announced his former club colleague Michael Oliver had been appointed to the post.
For the past two years Oliver has worked at Scottish Premier League side Dundee United, where Levein was the manager until he was installed as Scotland boss last month in succession to the sacked George Burley.
“Hopefully I can have a good impact on the squad’s preparations and have a real go at creating a good picture for Craig of the teams he will face,” Oliver, who has also scouted for English Premier League sides Birmingham and Wigan, told www.scottishfa.co.uk following Thursday’s announcement by the SFA.
He added: “More often than not I’ll be watching club matches where a percentage of players involved are eligible for an international opponent.
“That is where you’ll see a player perform to their full potential and learn most about them, as opposed to an international friendly where not a lot is at stake,” explained Oliver, likely to be Levein’s only full-time member of staff.
Levein, whose first game in charge is the international friendly against the Czech Republic in March, said: “When I was working at club level I didn’t like it if I sent out my team and the opposition brought on a player who I hadn’t briefed my players about.
“When I was offered the job here I made it clear from the start that I wanted a full-time scout.
“Michael fits the role perfectly,” added Levein, who first met Oliver as a 19-year-old when he played alongside him at Scottish lower league side Cowdenbeath.
“He already has a lot of experience in a similar role, he is used to travelling around Europe watching players, and he has made a lot of good contacts along the way.
“For the past two years he was my scout at Dundee United. For me the most important thing is that Michael always gives me a definitive opinion about a player,” Levein explained.
Scotland have not qualified for the finals of a major tournament since the 1998 World Cup in France and Levein’s primary task is to get the team through to the 2012 European Championship finals in Poland and the Ukraine.

Mourinho warns Mancini of impending culture shock
December 21, 2009

Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has warned Roberto Mancini that he could find the going difficult as the Premier League is “completely different” to Serie A.
But the Internazionale boss, who succeeded Mancini at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, also believes that the newly appointed Manchester City manager will enjoy life at Eastlands.
Mancini will appear at his first press conference as City manager later today after being named as the replacement for the sacked Mark Hughes on Saturday evening.
Mourinho had a hugely successful spell at Chelsea before joining Inter and he believes Mancini, who has been out of work since leaving the Nerazzurri in May 2008, is a good fit for ambitious City.
“I want to wish the best of luck to my colleague Roberto Mancini for his appointment at Manchester City,” Mourinho told Sky Italia.
“It will be a great and special experience for him to test himself in a very different reality to Italian football.
“The Premier League is completely different to what he has known so far.
“Mancini is a good coach and has an owner (Sheikh Mansour) who spends a lot of money.
“I don’t see why he shouldn’t be happy in England.”
One man who will not be following Mancini to Eastlands, according to his current employers, is Inter striker Mario Balotelli.
Balotelli has already been earmarked as a potential target for Mancini in the January transfer window, but Inter president Massimo Moratti insists the 19-year-old is going nowhere.
“I think they (Manchester City) have made a great signing (in Mancini),” said Moratti.
“But they should not inquire about Balotelli for January because we are not selling him.”
Balotelli, who is under contract with the Nerazzurri until 2011, has made just six league starts for Mourinho’s side this campaign.

Kahn urges old rival Lehmann to quit
December 15, 2009

On Tuesday, controversial Jens Lehmann received unexpected advice. Former Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn told his old colleague to quit football. “Maybe it would be better for him to retire now. Who knows where things might yet lead.”
Lehmann was involved in several incidents in the last couple of days. First, the VfB Stuttgart goalie criticised the club bosses for sacking coach Markus Babbel. Then, on Sunday he received a red card and gave away a penalty in the draw against Mainz (1-1). Stuttgart backed his goalie, which is hard to believe for Kahn.
“Jens is a good goalkeeper, but what should the club think? There is no point to it anymore. Stuttgart’s management have got to work out whether Lehmann is helping or damaging the team,” Kahn said to German paper TZ. Kahn and Lehmann sustained a bitter feud for several years when they were both fighting for the Germany number one jersey but they appeared to make peace at the 2006 World Cup when Kahn retired from international football.
However, after a talk with coach Christian Gross at training on Monday, it does not seem like Lehmann is going to follow Kahn’s advice. “”I am convinced that Jens will be fully motivated after the preparation for the second half of the season and will do all he can to end his career on a high in the summer of 2010,” said Gross.

Is Guardiola the man to tame Robinho?
October 16, 2009

“Of course I would like to play for Barca, who wouldn’t? We could have a lot of fun. It would be a pleasure to play with Messi, with my colleague Alves, with Xavi, Iniesta, Ibrahimovic, with all of them. They are a brilliant team.
“I have played against them and I know their quality. But at the moment I can only do it on my Playstation.”
Manchester City’s gifted but controversial Brazilian forward Robinho was thus quoted in Barcelona-based newspaper El Mundo Deportivo on Thursday.
According to the paper and its fellow Catalan sheet Sport, Robinho could join Pep Guardiola’s European champions on loan in January and has asked City for permission to leave.
Sport reported on Tuesday the deal would cost Barca 3.2 million euros ($4.8 million) and they would assume the payment of his current annual salary of 6.2 million.
A transfer had also been mooted, according to Sport, that would see Barca pay City 35 million euros and Robinho agree a contract through 2014.
Robinho, full name Robson de Souza, told El Mundo Deportivo he knew nothing about a possible deal.
“I assure you that as of this moment my father, who is my only representative, has not told me anything about Barca,” he said.
“Out of respect for Manchester City, which is my team, it should be the two clubs that talk about my loan or transfer and then tell me.
“It’s not right to talk about this hypothetical transfer or loan until there is something more concrete. I repeat: I don’t know anything, believe me.”
Robinho has been dogged by controversy on his journey from Brazil to Manchester via Real Madrid.
The word “unsettled” has stuck to him throughout his career but Sport reckons he wants to spend the second half of the season at Barca as a springboard for next year’s World Cup in South Africa.
City’s assistant manager, Mark Bowen, has said the club want to hold on to him but made it clear he will have to fight for his place in the side when he returns from injury. He has been sidelined since August with a stress fracture and Craig Bellamy has impressed on the left wing in his absence.
“Robi is one of those players who will always be surrounded by rumour and speculation,” Bowen said on the club’s website .
Guardiola is known for his man-management skills but his decision to sell Samuel Eto’o showed he is ready to stand up to anyone who threatens dressing-room harmony.
With France forward Thierry Henry out of sorts, Robinho could be deployed on the left wing to create a formidable forward line with Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Argentina forward Lionel Messi.
El Mundo Deportivo said Henry was open to returning to England and could form part of a swap deal.
Sporting director Txiki Begiristain has said Barca are looking to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window.
“He (Robinho) is a very interesting footballer and could play (for us) in the Champions League,” he told Sport.
The paper has rowed back somewhat from their banner headline on Saturday of “Robinho loan deal in January” to Thursday’s “He wants to come to Barca” but the prospect of Robinho, Ibrahimovic and Messi tearing defences apart is a mouthwatering one.

Werder can win UEFA Cup without me – Diego
May 20, 2009

ISTANBUL (AFP) – Influential Werder Bremen playmaker Diego has backed his team-mates to win their UEFA Cup final against Shakhtar Donetsk here on Wednesday, despite his absence through suspension.
The 24-year-old Brazilian international picked up a booking in Werder’s semi-final victory over domestic rivals Hamburg that ruled him out of the decider in Istanbul, but says his team can cope without him.
“My team-mates will win the UEFA Cup, without me and maybe also a little bit for me,” said the former Porto star, who is in talks with Italian giants Juventus over a reported 29 million-euro transfer for next season.
The likelihood that Diego will be playing his football in Serie A next term has turned attention towards his potential successor at Werder, Mesut Ozil.
The 20-year-old midfielder of Turkish descent made his debut for Germany in February and team-mate Torsten Frings feels he can handle the club’s expectations.
“All eyes will be on him, but he can make the difference on his own, as he’s shown this season when he’s really progressed,” said Frings.
“But we mustn’t overwhelm a 20-year-old player with too much pressure. We must all help him.”
Ozil himself, meanwhile, sees no reason why he cannot step into the shoes of his feted colleague.
“The absence of Diego is a big blow, but we’ve already won without him, and I know what I’m capable of.”
Diego may be unavailable, but Shakhtar have four exciting Brazilian talents of their own in the shape of Fernandinho, Ilsinho, Jadson and Adriano.
“I’m sure it will be a very interesting final between two very different teams,” said Shakhtar’s Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu, before appearing to disparage the qualities of a Werder team frequently lauded as one of the most attractive footballing sides in the Bundesliga.
“Bremen are direct, they’re very physical with some very strong players,” he said. “Our game is more technical and relies on the individual qualities of our players.
“They will try to provoke us to commit fouls and give away free-kicks.”
