Mourinho Man of the Match for Inter president
March 17, 2010

Internazionale president Massimo Moratti praised coach Jose Mourinho after their Champions League success against Chelsea.
“Mourinho was the Man of the Match,” said Moratti. “He had courage with the decisions he made during the last few days and tonight he picked the right line-up.”
“The players were very professional and the defenders in particular were fantastic.”
It is the first time Inter have reached the Champions League quarter-finals since 2006, ending a taboo for the club.
“If we start putting this victory down as a positive thing, that’s wonderful, but there are more to follow!
“We have a side that proved it has quality and also has the necessary character to keep going forward in the competition.”
Mourinho left the rebellious Mario Balotelli out of the squad that travelled to London and Moratti believes the Portuguese manager was right to do so.
“Mourinho made the right decision, so it means someone else did not do the right thing for the club.
“As I consider Balotelli to be a player of immense talent, I trust he will now prove he is a great professional and Mourinho will be very happy to field him again.”
It was also a win against the current Inter form, as they lost 3-1 at Catania on Friday and their Serie A lead is reduced to just one point.
“Inter had a very good second half in Catania then we made mistakes with our player correctly sent off.
“I had confidence in the performances, as over the last few weeks even draws had seen decent football aside from the game with Genoa. I therefore had the utmost faith that this would go well and the team was in good shape.”
The Nerazzurri are in the quarter-finals along with CSKA Moscow, Manchester United, Arsenal, Bayern München and Olympique Lyon.
“We always say that we’d love a big club to put ourselves to the test, but ultimately that’s all show. If we get an ‘easier’ opponent, then we’d be more than happy!
“I think this side can handle three competitions and also we’re still at the quarter-finals, so we need to keep hold of the Scudetto race,” Moratti concluded.

Pressure is on Barcelona-Sneijder
November 5, 2009

Wesley Sneijder’s late winner against Dynamo Kiev (1-2) caused a dramatic turn around in Group F. Inter Milan started the day at the bottom of the group but thanks to the win they now have a one-point lead at the top with two matches to play.
Sneijder was a doubt to play in Kiev, but scored the decisive goal.
The Dutchman passed a late fitness test in order to start against Dynamo, netting the stoppage-time goal that secured a 2-1 victory.
Sneijder stated after the match that “the pressure is now on Barcelona.”
“There was a dose of good luck, but also lots of courage in this victory and I was lucky to score,” the 25-year-old playmaker told Sky Sports Italia.
“I’m very pleased because I managed to give my contribution tonight. This is an extremely important victory for us, now we have two games to get the three points necessary to qualify.
“Thanks to this victory we can go and play at the Camp Nou in Barcelona with a bit less pressure.”

Simoes installed as new manager of Ticos
September 18, 2009

Rene Simoes, who was dismissed as Jamaica’s manager a year ago, has been selected as coach of Costa Rica, looking to resurrect the Ticos chances of qualifying for the World Cup.
The Costa Rican federation announced the appointment Wednesday night, installing the 56-year-old Brazilian two days after dismissing Rodrigo Kenton following a third straight loss in World Cup qualifying. The latest loss, 1-0 to El Salvador on September 9, dropped Costa Rico to fourth in the final round of World Cup qualifying.
Three teams are guaranteed a berth in the World Cup finals in June in South Africa, while the fourth-placed team earns a two-game playoff against the fifth-placed South American team, currently Argentina, for the last spot in the 32-team field. Costa Rica has 12 points, four behind “hexagonal” leader the United States, one behind third-placed Honduras and four ahead of fifth-placed El Salvador.
“We will, with a lot of courage, do what we can so that Costa Rica has a strong group that can qualify to the World Cup,” Simoes said in a statement released on the Costa Rican federation Web site.
(“Con mucho coraje, haremos lo posible para que Costa Rica tenga un grupo fuerte que pueda clasificar al mundial”, dijo Simoes.)
Simoes was fired as Jamaica’s manager after the Reggae Boyz were virtually eliminated from the semifinal round of World Cup qualifying in September 2008 following two losses in five days.
He coached Jamaica from 1994 to 2000, including to the 1998 World Cup in France, coached Brazil’s women to the silver medal at the 2004 Olympics and also Trinidad & Tobago from 2001 to 2002. He resigned from Brazilian second-division club Portugesa on August 26 after only two weeks on the job, saying armed men threatened his players in the locker room after a loss.
Costa Rica next plays Trinidad & Tobago at home on October 10 before finishing against the United States in Washington four days later.

Emotional good-bye for Michel Salgado
August 25, 2009

Michel Salgado has left Santiago Bernabeu stadium for the last time, after an emotional good-bye prior to Monday’s friendly match with Rosenborg.
The 33-year-old was applauded and chanted to by the fans, who had created banners containing phrases as ‘Ten years of Madrid courage’ and ‘Michel, unique and irreplaceable’.
The trophies won by Real Madrid during Salgado’s stay in the Spanish capital, awaited the defender on the pitch, as if to show how important he has been since joining the club from Celta de Vigo in 1999.
“It has been a wonderful ten years at this great club,” Salgado told LaSexta television after the homage. “I thank the club for what it has given me and I wish it all the best. I hope that it will be a ’see you later’ and not a ‘farewell’. I leave with the pride and privilege of having played at this team.”
The Galician is set to continue his career at English Premiership side Blackburn Rovers.

Neill set to decide over future
August 12, 2009

The 31-year-old is currently a free agent and looking for a new contract with the Hammer after his deal with West Ham expired over the summer.
While, being linked with Sunderland and Manchester City, the player himself has confirmed that West Ham have made an offer on the table with the possibility of a return to Upton Park.
However, Neill is refusing to confirm where he will end up, stating only that he is looking forward to resolving his future.
Neill has offers from outside of England, although he leaning against having to settle in a new environment and tackle a new language.
“It’s been interesting, it’s been a little frustrating as well, but at the same time exciting,” Neill told Fox Sports.
“There’s a number of clubs who have shown an interest and my agents have been talking to them.
“But I think we’re down to the shortlist and I just want to get amongst it now and join a team and focus on the season ahead.
“There’s an offer [from West Ham]. And it’s an offer that’s on the shortlist, it’s being considered. I’m very loyal to West Ham.
“We are talking to two clubs outside of England. That’s been the hardest one because it’s a language barrier, it’s a change of what I’ve been used to for 14 years.
“So that decision takes a lot of courage to do but that’s why I’ve taken my time because it’s not something I take lightly.”
