Chamakh rules out winter move
December 19, 2009

Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh has ruled out a January transfer move by stating that he would talk about his future when the season ends.
The 25-year-old does not want to be engulfed in another tedious transfer saga in January with Arsene Wenger being interested during the close season, in securing the services of the striker leading to seemingly endless speculation of a potential £8million switch.
But a move did not materialise and Chamakh does not want a repeat scenario when the winter window opens in a fortnight.
Chamakh becomes a free agent at the end of the season and he wants to concentrate on performing for his current club until that time.
“I am sure I will finish the current campaign at Bordeaux. It’s perfectly clear. I will be free at the end of the season,” he said in France Football.
“I don’t want my name to be rumoured everywhere from 1st to 31st of January. I don’t want to experience again what I endured.
“(I don’t want) people to ask ‘do you want to leave?’ or ‘do you want to move?’. My answer is no.”
Chamakh has also not ruled out the possibility of staying in Ligue 1 with Bordeaux.
“The door remains open at Les Girondins. It is up to me and I will take my time,” he said.

Bates blasts Big clubs and their transfer policy
September 5, 2009

Former Chelsea chairman Ken Bates believes the Blues’ transfer ban is the result of a wider practice that sees top clubs trade young players “like horsemeat”.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side were rocked this week by a FIFA ban on signing any players during the next two transfer windows after luring teenager Gael Kakuta from Lens, a decision they intend to appeal.
Bates successfully won a reported £5million compensation payment from the Blues in 2006 after they signed teenagers Michael Woods and Tom Taiwo from his current club, Leeds.
Chelsea are not alone among the Premier League elite in scouring Europe for the brightest young talents but Bates has criticised the methods involved in such a recruitment policy.
Bates, currently Leeds chairman, told the Daily Mail: “The problem here is that the big clubs are stripping the small clubs of their youngsters.
“They are like Japanese fishing trawlers, just sweeping up everything in their nets.
“Right now some of these boys are just being traded like horsemeat.”

Ricardo Costa refuses to sign with Zaragoza
July 30, 2009
Ricardo Costa will not be playing for Real Zaragoza this season. The Portuguese defender failed to reach an agreement with the Spanish club.
A day earlier, the transfer seemed to be all but official as Ricardo Costa travelled to Spain to sign the contract.
However, the documents handed to the player didn’t include particular demands that the 28-year-old had set, leading to his immediate departure back to Wolfsburg, his current club.
It seems unlikely that the player actually spends another year at the German champions, where he doesn’t form part of coach Armin Veh’s plans.

Danijel Pranjic joins Bayern Munich
June 22, 2009

Croatian midfielder Danijel Pranjic has agreed to join Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich on a three year contract.
Bayern and Danijel’s current club, Heerenveen, sealed the move on Monday and agreed not to disclose the transfer fee, the German club said in a statement.
The 27-year-old Pranjic, who joined Heerenveen in 2005 from Dinamo Zagreb, scored 16 goals last season for the Dutch team.
Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “Pranjic is a versatile player who was very high on the wish list of our new coach, Louis Van Gaal.”

Berlusconi unsure about Pirlo’s future
June 21, 2009

AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi has expressed his doubts whether Andrea Pirlo will stay at the club or not.
Although the Italian Premier, who is the current club president, is sure Alexandre Pato will stay but there have been suggestions that Pirlo might not be the only star player, who could leave San Siro this summer following Kaka’s switch to Real Madrid.
The departure of former Milan boss Carlo Ancelotti, who is now managing Chelsea FC, has led to linking of several players to the London club.
However, Berlusconi is confident Pato will enjoy an impressive season at Milan while he is hopeful playmaker Pirlo will also stay.
“We are going to see what we do with Pirlo, I hope that he is going to stay and I was the first to say so, but we must assess the situation,” Berlusconi said on Milan Channel.
“Pato is going to complete an amazing career and I think that he can replace Kaka.”
On the futures of Brazil forward Ronaldinho and experienced midfielder Massimo Ambrosini, Berlusconi said: “Ronaldinho will be fine this year.
“There is no problem with Ambrosini, who wants to extend his contract to another season.”
Berlusconi also feels the club, under new boss Leonardo, will return to winning ways next term.
He added: “This year we have a great team, last season we wasted our finish by giving the ball away too often in decisive moments.”

Martinez set to become new Wigan boss
June 4, 2009

WIGAN, England (AFP) – Roberto Martinez is set to become the new manager of Wigan after the Premier League club reached an agreement with his current club Swansea on the terms of his release.
Wigan owner Dave Whelan confirmed Thursday that he had agreed to pay the Championship club around two million pounds in compensation and voiced confidence that he could quickly wrap up negotiations on Martinez’s personal terms.
The 35-year-old Martinez is a former Wigan player who has established a reputation as an astute manager after guiding Swansea to the League One title and then within two places of the Championship play-offs in successive seasons.
“Roberto played good football and I’ve followed his career go on and on,” Whelan said Thursday. “His players play football from back to front, I like what I see and I am really excited Roberto is coming back to Wigan.
“Compensation was something we had to agree, that is only fair and right. We did that with Birmingham and we have now agreed with the chairman of Swansea.
“Hopefully things will be sorted out and contracts signed by tomorrow morning.”
Martinez had also been linked to the managerial vacancy at Celtic but Swansea had refused the Scottish club permission to talk to him without a prior agreement on compensation.
The new manager will succeed Steve Bruce, who guided Wigan to 11th place in the Premier League but opted for a move to Sunderland after growing frustrated with the financial constraints that resulted in key players including Wilson Palacios and Emile Heskey being sold.
Antonio Valencia is expected to follow those two out of the JJB Stadium this summer but Martinez has been promised some funds for rebuilding.
“We are not the biggest club but we will talk and we have the money we require to replace players,” Whelan said.
“Roberto will be getting the funds that we can afford to replace the players we need.”

Man City in bid to lure Barry to Manchester
June 2, 2009

BIRMINGHAM (AFP) – England midfielder Gareth Barry has opened negotiations with Manchester City about a potential move to Eastlands from his current club Aston Villa.
Barry, 28, came close to joining Liverpool last year and was expected to be a target for them again this summer.
But it now seems as if the Reds will have to match any offer made by City, who have reportedly indicated that they are willing to pay 12 million pounds for a player with only one year left on his contract.
City, who are owned by the Abu Dhabi United Group, are expected to be big players in the close season transfer market and manager Mark Hughes is a long-standing admirer of Barry.
The midfielder is currently preparing for England’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra and is thought unlikely to make any decision on his future until after those matches on June 6 and 10.
Although City cannot offer him Champions League football — which was one of the reasons he gave for requesting a transfer when Liverpool made their bid last year — Barry could be tempted to Eastlands by the prospect of significantly increased wages and the prospect of regular first-team football in the run-up to next year’s World Cup finals in South Africa.
Barry has spent his entire career at Villa, making over 400 appearances since he emerged from the youth ranks.

Downing out for up to three months
May 21, 2009

LONDON (AFP) – Middlesbrough and England winger Stewart Downing will be out of action for up to three months after being told he needs surgery on his injured right foot.
The news means Downing will miss England’s World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra next month and could scupper his chances of a close-season move to a bigger club.
The 24-year-old was widely expected to leave Middlesbrough this summer regardless of whether the club survives in the top flight, which looks unlikely.
Boro go into their final match of the season, at West Ham on Sunday, needing a win combined with defeats for both Newcastle and Hull if they are to survive.
Boro assistant boss Malcolm Crosby said: “I think Stewart is going to be out for two or three months at least. That’s not good news for him or the club.
“Stewart has played every game for us this season and has made a big contribution. He hasn’t scored goals, but he has worked extremely hard.”
Tests on Downing’s foot have not revealed a fracture but he will definitely require an operation, according to Crosby.
Liverpool are widely seen as the leading candidates to sign Downing, who was the subject of an offer from Tottenham last year that was turned down by his current club.

Red Bull Salzburg want clarity from Adriaanse
March 20, 2009
Red Bull Salzburg manager Co Adriaanse will have to provide his current club some clarity on his future as soon as possible, says sports director Heinz Hochhauser.
Adriaanse is one of the main candidates to take the leads at reigning Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven, but Salzburg has not been informed so far.
"If Adriaanse doesn’t give us clarity before easter, we’ll do it for him," Hochhauser says in Österreich newspaper.
Adriaanse achieved success with clubs as AZ Alkmaar and FC Porto in the past, and joined Red Bull at the start of the current season.
