Fenerbahce escape in Turkish Cup clash
February 12, 2010

Fenerbahce are through to the semi finals in the Turkish Cup despite losing 3-1 to Bursaspor in the quarter finals second leg on Thursday.
After Fenerbahce’s comfortable 3-0 win in the first leg, a spot in the semi’s seemed to be in the pocket. However, Bursaspor had different plans and gave their opponents a difficult time.
Leonardo Iglesias put Bursaspor in the lead after 18 minutes and a converted penalty from Dimitar Ivankov gave home fans even more hope in the 33rd.
Turgey Bahadir levelled the aggregate score four minutes after the hour, as things began to look better and better for Bursaspor.
But Fenerbahce avoided further damage and instead scored through Spanish striker Daniel Guiza in the 90th minute, deciding the quarter final clash in their favor.
In Thursday’s other quarter final, Manisaspor beat Denizlispor 0-1 after already having won the first leg 4-1. Ergin Keles scored the only goal of the match in the 35th minute.
Fenerbahce and Manisaspor join Trabzonspor and Antalyaspor in the semi finals.

Fenerbahce back on top in Turkey
December 21, 2009

Fenerbahce moved to the top spot in the Turkish Super Lig with a 0-1 win at Trabzonspor on Sunday.
As arch rivals Galatasaray won their match with Genclerbirligi a day earlier, Fenerbahce needed a victory to jump back to first place.
After a goalless first half in Trabzon, it was Spanish striker Daniel Guiza to score the only goal of the match after 56 minutes.
Until this week, Fenerbahce shared first place with Kayserispor but the latter crashed to a 1-2 defeat by Antalyaspor on Saturday.

Alex and Guiza lead Fenerbahce to victory
December 13, 2009

After losing their last three games in the Turkish Super Lig, Fenerbahce returned to winning ways with a 3-2 victory over Ankaragucu on Saturday.
‘Fener’ desperately needed a win to take off some of the pressure that has been mounting on the Istanbul outfit after their series of bad results.
Brazilian forward Alex put Fenerbahce in the lead after 27 minutes, but goals from Darius Vassell (38th) and Aydin Karabulut (50th) turned things around for Ankaragucu.
But the home side’s flexibility allowed them to fight a way back into the game, with Alex making it 2-2 on the hour. Spanish striker Daniel Guiza netted the winner with just two minutes left in regular time.
Fenerbahce are currently in first place, but may have to share the top spot again after Kayserispor’s away game to Istanbul BB on Sunday.

Senna set for Spain return
August 27, 2009

Marcos Senna has been recalled to the Spain squad for the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa qualifying home double-header against Belgium and Estonia.
Senna, a key member of Spain’s UEFA EURO 2008-winning side, has recovered from the hamstring injury that forced him to miss this summer’s FIFA Confederations Cup tournament and the recent friendly with FYR Macedonia and takes his place in a 22-man party.
The 33-year-old midfielder is the only addition to the squad selected for the Macedonia match, with Osasuna defender Ignacio Monreal, who was called up for the first time to cover for the injured Sergio Ramos, retaining his place. Spain play hosts to Belgium on 5 September in La Coruna before meeting Estonia in Merida four days later.
Vicente del Bosque’s side have a 100 per cent record after six qualifying games, leaving them top of Group 5, six points ahead of second-placed Bosnia-Herzegovina and within touching distance of a place in next year’s finals in South Africa.
Squad: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Jose Reina (Liverpool), Diego Lopez (Villarreal); Raul Albiol (Real Madrid), Alvaro Arbeloa (Real Madrid), Joan Capdevila (Villarreal), Carlos Marchena (Valencia), Ignacio Monreal (Osasuna), Gerard Pique, Carles Puyol (both Barcelona); Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Sergio Busquets (Barcelona), Santi Cazorla (Villarreal), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), Xavi (Barcelona), David Silva, Juan Mata (both Valencia), Albert Riera (Liverpool), Marcos Senna (Villarreal); Daniel Guiza (Fenerbahce), Fernando Torres (Liverpool), David Villa (Valencia)

Guiza delivers as Spain finish third in Confed Cup
June 30, 2009

RUSTENBURG, South Africa (AFP) – Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso scored off a free kick to give Spain a dramatic 3-2 extra-time victory over South Africa on Sunday in the Confederations Cup third place play-off.
A largely incident-less game sprang to life late in the second half when Bafana Bafana (The Boys) striker Katlego Mphela scored only for another substitute, Daniel Guiza, to strike twice for Spain within 60 seconds.
Mphela struck again three minutes into stoppage time to add 30 minutes on to the match and Spain took the lead again to defeat the host nation for the second time in nine days after a 2-0 group win.
The host nation made one change from the team that held Brazil until two minutes from full-time in the semi-finals with suspended midfield ‘enforcer’ MacBeth Sibaya back in place of Benson Mhlongo.
Spain reacted to a shock defeat by the United States in the first semi-final with four changes as Raul Albiol, Sergio Busquets, Alvaro Arbeloa and Santi Cazorla came in and Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas was among those rested.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter was present on a sunny winter afternoon in the north-west mining town and Spain were first to threaten with David Villa forcing a spectacular one-hand save from Itumeleng Khune.
South Africa crowd favourite Matthew Booth, whose every touch triggers chants of Booooooooth, let his ‘fan club’ down on 14 minutes after getting behind the Spanish defence.
Instead of heading to the right of goalkeeper Iker Casillas, the giant central defender could only nod the ball forward and harmlessly wide to the relief of the Euro 2008 champions.
A superb tackle from fullback Tsepo Masilela – a find of the two-week 2010 World Cup dress rehearsal – foiled Liverpool striker Fernando Torres midway through a cagey opening half.
Although South Africa lie 71 places below top ranked Spain they held their own before a crowd packed with vuvuzela-blowing spectators and when Casillas parried a Siphiwe Tshabalala drive, Booth fired the rebound wide.
Brazil-born Bafana coach Joel Santana is a hard man to satisfy and he arose from his touchline chair a couple of minutes before half-time and unleashed a verbal rant at his hard-working, organised team.
Spain midfielder Sergio Busquets was the only player cautioned in the first half and Everton star Steven Pienaar joined him in the notebook of Australian referee Matthew Breeze just after half-time.
Busquets had a goal correctly disallowed with three Spaniards offside and Khune did well to hold an Albert Riera shot as the visitors lifted their game and looked more likely to break the deadlock.
But it was South Africa who took the lead thanks to a brilliant off-the-ball run by Tshabalala, who latched on to a cross and pushed it across the goalmouth for Mphela to control before firing into the roof of the net.
It appeared enough to give South Africa victory until a remarkable end to regular time saw Spain score twice within 60 seconds through Guiza before Mphela levelled.
Guiza fired the ball through a forest of legs and past Khune into the corner for an 88th-minute equaliser and then saw his cross dip behind the goalkeeper into the net.
South Africa may have been stunned but their spirit remained strong and when awarded a free kick well outside the penalty area, Mphela stopped up and drove an unstoppable shot past Casillas.
Spain had a claim for handball inside the penalty area by Mhlongo late in the first period ignored before Alonso curled his free kick around the wall and over Fernando Llorente and Booth into the corner of the net for the winner.

Quick Report: Spain 3-2 South Africa
June 29, 2009

Spain have won the match for third place at the 2009 Confederations Cup, beating hosts South Africa 3-2 after extra time. A free kick from Xabi Alonso led Vicente del Bosque’s side to victory.
Spain struggled in the first half but seemed to be doing better in the second. However, a disallowed goal from Llorente took away some of their motivation and South Africa took advantage as Katlego Mphela received the ball near the goal after an incisive attack, and slammed it past keeper Casillas for 1-0.
The South African fans had already begun to celebrate their imminent victory when Daniel Guiza levelled in the 89th minute, to even put Spain ahead with a magnificent chip one minute later.
But there was more to come at Rustenburg’s Royal Bafokeng stadium, and significant amounts of home fans would have wished that they hadn’t left the venue prematurely.
A foul from Riera earned South Africa a free kick two minutes into additional time, and Mphela’s powerful effort left Casillas stranded, 2-2.
But in the second half of extra time, the Spanish had the final say. A free kick from Xabi Alonso curled in at the far post, as both teammates and opponents failed to get their head to it. The keeper came too late as well, with the winning goal as result.

Sizzling Spain fire six-goal Confed Cup warning
June 10, 2009

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) – Spain fired a six-goal warning on Tuesday as the countdown to the June 14 kick-off of the FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa continued.
Striker David Villa, reportedly on the wanted list of super spenders Real Madrid, performed a one-man sales pitch during the first half in Azerbaijan with a hat-trick that set up a 6-0 friendly triumph.
While pitting the country ranked first in the world against opponents who weigh in at number 140 might appear cruel, the sizzling Spaniards reeled off another victory without a hint of mercy.
Euro 2008 winners Spain inhabit what appears to be much the easier of the two Confederations Cup groups with hosts South Africa and the champions of Asia and Oceania, Iraq and New Zealand.
On the other side of the draw, World Cup holders Italy come face to face with defending Confederations Cup champions Brazil, and potentially dangerous ‘dark horses’ Egypt and the United States lurk in the background.
New Zealand, who have lost all six encounters in two previous Confederations Cup appearances with an embarrassing 2-17 goal tally, face Spain in the north-west mining town of Rustenburg on Sunday.
And when the score from Baku in the oil-rich east European state filters through to the ‘All Whites’ camp, it can only heighten fears that they are set to become the next victims of the Spanish armada.
Villa from cash-strapped Valencia demonstrated his predatory instincts by converting an Alvaro Albeloa cross, slamming home a shot from outside the penalty area, and converting a penalty when Cesc Fabregas was fouled.
Albert Riera, substitute Daniel Guiza and Liverpool goal machine Fernando Torres scored in the second half as Spain demonstrated why they are the most feared national football team in Europe.
It was much closer in Cape Town where Iraq scored first but had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Poland in their first competitive action under Serb Bora Milutinovic, who has coached five countries at the World Cup.
Mahdi Kareem half volleyed a cross from constant menace Hawar Mohammed into the Polish net on 54 minutes only for Brazil-born Roger Guerreiro to equalise with a shot that gave goalkeeper Noor Sabri no chance.
South Africa, who edged Poland 1-0 in Johannesburg last weekend, meet Iraq in the tournament opener at Ellis Park on Sunday with the winners expected to accompany Spain into the semi-finals.
Super Stadium in Atteridgeville outside Pretoria – host to numerous recent South Africa fixtures – will stage a friendly between Italy and New Zealand on Wednesday night.
This fixture presents a challenge for notoriously fickle South African football followers who must decide between attending the game in expected freezing winter conditions or watching it live on television.
The Confederations Cup began officially in 1999 and now serves as a four-yearly dress rehearsal for the World Cup, which South Africa hosts between June 11 and July 11 next year.
