Early goals take Hull away from drop zone
November 26, 2009

An early three-goal salvo gave Hull City three vital points in securing a 3-2 win over Everton in the English Premier League on Wednesday.
Stephen Hunt snatched the opener after nine minutes and Andy Dawson netted a free kick in the 20th minute before Dean Marney grabbed a third just before the half hour mark to leave Everton, themselves too close to the drop zone for comfort, shellshocked.
After the break the Merseysiders fought their way back into the contest and a comical own goal from Kamil Zayatte four minutes after the restart gave David Moyes’ men a sliver of hope.
Louis Saha converted a spotkick which Zayatte conceded by fouling the French striker midway through the second period but the Tigers then battened down the hatches and held on for a win which takes them to 15 points, level with the Toffees.
Everton now have just one win in their last 10 games while Hull boss Phil Brown’s gamble of resting experienced veteran Jimmy Bullard owing to a minor knee problem paid off.
Everton had won a League Cup encounter between the sides 4-0 at the KC Stadium earlier this season but were a pale shadow of themselves by comparison.
The win takes Hull up a notch to 15th level on points with Wednesday’s rivals and one clear of Wigan, trounced 9-1 at Spurs at the weekend.
Also on Wednesday, Fulham saw off Blackburn 3-0 as the Londoners moved into the top half of the table with goals from Erik Nevland just before the interval and a second-half brace from Dempsey.
Blackburn dropped back to 12th as their conquerors leapfrogged them.

US striker Altidore ready for Hull bow
August 21, 2009

Hull’s US striker Jozy Altidore is set to make his Premier League debut in Saturday’s meeting with Bolton with the on-loan youngster from Spain’s Villarreal having missed the Tigers’ losses to Chelsea and Tottenham owing to red tape problems.
Craig Fagan is also in contention after recovering from a summer hernia operation but midfielder Dean Marney is still out with a knee injury while Jimmy Bullard and Ian Ashbee are long-term casualties.
Having just stayed up in their first top-flight season Hull are seeking to bounce back after their unlucky loss at Stamford Bridge and then a midweek home mauling by Spurs.

Hull survive despite United defeat
May 25, 2009

HULL (AFP) – Hull City avoided relegation from the Premier League despite losing 1-0 to an under-strength Manchester United on Sunday as Newcastle’s defeat kept the Tigers out of the bottom three.
Phil Brown’s side knew a victory would secure their safety whatever the results elsewhere, but Darron Gibson’s stunning first half strike at the KC Stadium put the pressure on.
It could have been enough to condemn Hull to the Championship but, despite winning just two of their last 29 games, they avoided the drop after Newcastle lost at Aston Villa, while Middlesbrough crashed at West Ham.
Never had a team sheet been so eagerly anticipated all season considering all the speculation surrounding who United boss Sir Alex Ferguson would pick.
There was little doubt Ferguson named a weakened team, irrespective of the fact the visitors side still contained six full internationals, including the experienced duo of Gary Neville and Wes Brown in defence, while Nani returned to midfield and Federico Macheda was given a rare start in attack alongside Danny Welbeck.
Brown must have have been relieved not to see the name of Rio Ferdinand, however. The England centre back has been struggling to overcome a calf problem and had been expected to be involved, but he was left out altogether to raise doubts about his participation in this week’s Champions League final against Barcelona.
Ferguson also handed a debut to defender Ritchie De Laet. The Belgium-born left back whose only previous action this season had been three games for Wrexham in the Conference.
Darren Fletcher, ineligible for the final in Rome, was made captain. Hull, meanwhile, had no such luxury.
Brown named the same team which earned a crucial draw at Bolton Wanderers, with the exception of Dean Marney coming in for Manucho, who was ineligible due to the terms of his loan move from Old Trafford.
Hull made a bright start and looked to take the initiative, but Craig Fagan failed to control Michael Turner’s long pass with just Tomasz Kuszczak to beat before Fagan narrowly missed a dangerous cross from Geovanni.
It took United a while to get into their stride but once they did a goal seemed inevitable. Nani tested Bo Myhill with a free kick before De Laet missed Rafael Da Silva’s cross by inches.
The breakthrough came in stunning fashion on 24 minutes when Gibson rifled an unstoppable drive past Myhill and into the top corner to stun home fans into silence.
Brown’s men could have fallen further behind but Macheda failed to convert Lee Martin’s cross a minute later before Welbeck burst past four defenders on a 60 metre run only to drag his shot wide.
Macheda followed suit two minutes later as the home defence threatened to crumble.
Andy Dawson drew a fine save from Kuszczak and Neville almost headed into his own goal but it looked increasingly likely that Hull’s fate would be decided at Villa Park, where the news was good.
Nick Barmby saw his header from a tight angle well blocked by Kuszczak as Hull looked to launch the kitchen sink at United’s defence and snatch the goal that would mean they were not reliant on events elsewhere.
It wasn’t to be but it didn’t matter as Villa handed them one of the biggest favours possible.

Watson fires Wigan´s European challenge
March 22, 2009
WIGAN, England (AFP) – Wigan boosted their bid for European football as Ben Watson’s late goal sealed a 1-0 win against Hull on Sunday.
Steve Bruce’s side moved into seventh place in the Premier League thanks to Watson’s fine strike at the JJB Stadium and their dreams of continental action in the Europa League – next season’s revamped UEFA Cup – are looking more realistic by the week.
While Wigan look up, Hull’s players are nervously glancing over their shoulders towards the relegation zone after a defeat which kept them just four points from safety,
Hull boss Phil Brown made five changes to the team beaten at Arsenal in the FA Cup in midweek as Matt Duke, Michael Turner, Kevin Kilbane, Bernard Mendy and Dean Marney returned.
South Korea midfielder Cho Won-hee was given his first taste of English football with a place on the bench for Wigan, although in the end he didn’t get to come on for his debut.
The Latics started well and Duke had to tip Charles N’Zogbia’s long-range cross-shot over via the crossbar.
Watson forced Duke into a low save with a 25-yard shot before Mido was guilty of wasting the best opportunity after Hugo Rodallega and Paul Scharner exchanged quick passes to bypass the Hull midfield.
Rodallega pulled the ball back to Egypt forward Mido on the right angle of the penalty area but he blazed over.
Mido squandered another chance in the 28th minute after Scharner had outjumped the defence to head Maynor Figueroa’s long ball down to Rodallega in the six-yard area.
Rodallega had a chance of his own to give Wigan the lead when he raced on to Scharner’s through-ball, but with only the keeper to beat his shot was too close to Duke.
Having spent long periods with little to do Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland had to be alert to tip over Manucho’s flashed header from Marney’s 50th-minute corner.
Wigan forward Amr Zaki, on as a replacement for Mido, rose highest in a crowd to head Daniel De Ridder’s cross against the foot of a post with Duke beaten.
The hosts were finally rewarded for their pressure in the 84th minute.
Duke’s weak punch didn’t clear the penalty area and Watson looped a perfect lobbed volley over the goalkeeper and in at the far post despite Kilbane’s best efforts to keep it out.

Zayatte strike rescues Hull from FA Cup chop
February 14, 2009
SHEFFIELD, England (AFP) – Hull fought back to earn an FA Cup fifth round replay against Sheffield United as Kamil Zayatte’s strike secured a 1-1 draw on Saturday.
Phil Brown’s Premier League side were facing an embarrassing exit when Greg Halford’s early goal put the Championship promotion chasers into the lead at Bramall Lane.
But Guinea defender Zayatte, playing in an unaccustomed midfield role, bailed out the Tigers with an equaliser – only his second goal of the season – before the break to set up a replay at the KC Stadium.
With former Tottenham centre-back Anthony Gardner making his long-awaited return to action after five months on the sidelines with a thigh problem, Hull should have had a more secure look at the back.
Brown’s men had the first chance when captain Dean Marney surged forward before driving a powerful shot just over.
But there was no sign of any new-found solidity in Hull’s leaky defence as the Blades grabbed the lead in the seventh minute.
Hull left-back Andy Dawson slipped and allowed David Cotterill to cross to Halford, who outjumped Sam Ricketts at the far post to plant a firm header past Boaz Myhill.
Brown’s side responded to that setback with Richard Garcia heading over from a Dawson corner.
Halford could have increased United’s lead after breaking clear but shot straight at Myhill when through on goal.
The Blades lost Chris Morgan when the defender was stretchered off midway through the first half, with striker Danny Webber sent on as his replacement.
As United regrouped, Hull took advantage and levelled after 34 minutes when Dawson delivered a curling free-kick from the right and Zayatte got forward to glance a header past Kenny.
United went close to regaining the lead in first-half stoppage time when Billy Sharp headed wide from another Cotterill cross.
Hull appealed for a penalty early in the second half after Caleb Folan was released by a brilliant back-heel from Geovanni and went down as Halford challenged, but referee Andre Marriner waved away their protests.
The visitors had another good opportunity moments later as Ricketts crossed but Kenny parried Garcia’s header. Kenny had to be at his best again to stop Bernard Mendy’s effort moments later.
That was as close as either team came to a winner and the sides will now meet again for a place in the last eight a week on Thursday.

West Brom battle back to snatch point at Hull
January 31, 2009
HULL, England (AFP) – West Bromwich Albion twice came from behind to salvage a 2-2 draw at Hull City in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Baggies went into the game off the back of a 5-0 thumping by league leaders Manchester United in midweek, but the point earned at the KC Stadium means they are now just a point from safety at the bottom of the table.
It was a far cry from Hull’s 3-0 victory when the sides met at The Hawthorns in October – a result which briefly took Phil Brown’s top flight newcomers joint-top of the table, before their recent alarming slide set in.
The home side took a deserved lead in first-half injury time here when French midfielder Bernard Mendy burst into the visitors’ penalty area before coolly rounding England international goalkeeper Scott Carson and tucking the ball into the empty net.
Carson was called into action twice as Hull started the second half strongly, first saving from Dean Marney and then keeping out a header by left-back Michael Dawson.
But with Hull pressing forward they were hit by a devastating counter-punch, as on-loan Arsenal striker Jay Simpson finished crisply after an enterprising run by James Morrison.
As the game opened up, Richard Garcia almost converted a cross from Mendy, before the Frenchman centred for Craig Fagan to head home with just over 20 minutes remaining.
West Brom, though, refused to lie down, and Chris Brunt equalised four minutes later from the penalty spot after Kamil Zayatte was judged to have fouled Robert Koren.
The result brought an end to Hull’s six-game losing streak but means they are still without a win since a 2-1 triumph over second-bottom Middlesbrough in December.
