Top three win in Eredivisie

February 4, 2010

There were no surprises in the Dutch Eredivisie this Wednesday, as all of the top three teams won their home matches without particular difficulties.

Joint leaders PSV hosted FC Utrecht and went ahead through Ola Toivonen in the seventh minute. Sander Keller did level with six minutes to go until the break, but midfielder Orlando Engelaar went on to net the home side’s winner on the hour mark.

Utrecht goalscorer Keller was sent off with a second yellow card in the 77th minute.

Twente played a home match with fifth-placed Heracles and scored one goal in each half to beat their guests 2-0. Costa Rican Bryan Ruiz opened the scoring in minute 43, and Blaise N’Kufo doubled the advantage in the 66th.

Ajax forgot to score in the first half against Roda JC, but made up for it in the second. Luis Suarez scored two penalties, one in the 54th minute and one in the 69th, and went on to find the target again in the 79th and 86th minutes for a stunning total of four goals.

Roda played part of the second half with a man less, as Davy de Fauw collected his second yellow card in the 67th minute.

PSV jump to top in Eredivisie

January 20, 2010

PSV Eindhoven are the new leaders in the Dutch Eredivisie following a narrow win at Roda JC on Tuesday.

As FC Twente dropped two points at FC Utrecht two days earlier, PSV knew that a win would allow them to jump into shared first place.

And Fred Rutten’s men needed just one goal to achieve just that, with Danny Koevermans netting the winner in the last minute before the interval.

PSV now have the same amount of points at Twente, but their goal record is significantly better.

Ajax lose touch with Eredivisie top

December 7, 2009

Ajax lost touch with the top two in the Dutch Eredivisie, as the Amsterdam outfit lost 2-0 at FC Utrecht on Sunday.

Utrecht had not beaten Ajax in four years but that streak was to come to an end with Jacob Mulenga scoring the opening goal three minutes after the break.

Jan Wuytens made it 2-0 six minutes after the hour and when Ajax had Vurnon Anita sent off eight minutes later, there appeared to be no hope left for Martin Jol’s men.

Leaders FC Twente struggled but secured a victory at a very inspired NEC. John Goossens scored the opening goal on 15 minutes, but Twente reacted with goals from Kenneth Perez (18th), Blaise N’Kufo (25th) and Miroslav Stoch (31st).

Bjorn Vleminckx then scored twice (41st and 45th minutes) to lead NEC back into the match but was then red-carded ten minutes after the break.

His two goals would not stand as Costa Rican Bryan Ruiz scored the winning goal with two minutes to go.

Second-placed PSV won their match at last-placed RKC, beating their hosts 0-2 in a provincial derby. Jonathan Reis broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute, and Danko Lazovic doubled the lead with seven minutes left.

Nine in a row for FC Twente

November 22, 2009

FC Twente extended their winning streak in the Dutch Eredivisie to nine games with Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Vitesse.

The only goal of the match was scored with just six minutes to go, and came from Costa Rican striker Bryan Ruiz.

As a result, the gap between Steve McClaren’s Twente and second-placed PSV grows to five points, although the latter still have Sunday’s game with Heracles ahead.

AZ Alkmaar earned a vital 2-4 win at Roda JC. Jeremain Lens put AZ ahead after just three minutes but Roda then turned things around through Pa Kah (27th) and Jeanvion Yulu Matondo (53rd).

The visiting side had the final say however. Rasmus Elm equalized in minute 70, Lens made it 2-3 five minutes later and Jonathas added a fourth away goal in the 80th minute, 2-4.

Sparta beat Feyenoord in Rotterdam derby

October 19, 2009

Feyenoord Rotterdam failed to stay close to the top in the Dutch Eredivisie, losing the city derby with Sparta 2-1 on Sunday.

It was an eventful match at Sparta stadium, where Feyenoord initially took the lead with a goal from Andre Bahia in the 37th minute.

The guests then went a man down as Sekou Cisse conceded a red card in the 51st minute, and Sparta’s Rydell Poepon leveled the score a few minutes later.

Danish striker Jon Dahl Tomasson then followed Cisse to the dressing room with a red card in minute 59, but Sparta had a player sent off as well as Poepon picked up a second booking ten minutes later.

Kevin Strootman scored the winning goal of the match at six minutes from the end.

FC Utrecht were held to a goalless draw at FC Groningen, and remain in fifth place, one point behind Feyenoord.

PSV beat Feyenoord in Dutch top clash

September 20, 2009

PSV Eindhoven are the only leaders in the Dutch Eredivisie following a 1-3 victory at Feyenoord on Sunday.

The two teams went into this game joint leaders, but PSV soon showed to be in better shape than their opponents as Danny Koevermans scored from about six meters in the 11th minute.

Nine minutes later, the PSV forward slammed home his second to double the away side’s lead.

Andwele Slory then got one back with a low diagonal effort in minute 23 but Otman Bakkal restored the original gap 14 minutes later.

Feyenoord lacked the strength to fight their way back into this game and drop from shared first to fourth position.

FC Twente is one of the teams that surpass Feyenoord, thanks to a 0-2 win at SC Heerenveen. Miroslav Stoch scored both goals, one in the 22nd minute and the other in the 72nd.

Ajax Amsterdam earned a comfortable 0-4 win at VVV Venlo, in the process handing their opponents their first defeat of the season. Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez netted no less than four times with goals in the 3rd, 68th, 70th and 90th minutes. The victory allows Ajax to climb to third place.

FC Utrecht added another three points to their account with a 0-1 win at ADO Den Haag. The only goal of the match came from Dries Mertens on 70 minutes.

Marco van Basten’s Ajax Amsterdam crushed Willem II 7-0 in the Dutch Eredivisie on Sunday, while SC Heerenveen defended their fourth place with a 1-0 win over last-placed FC Volendam.

Three goals in the first twenty minutes, two from Dario Cvitanich and one from Eyong Enoh, gave Ajax a very comfortable and quick lead. Luis Suarez went on to score from the penalty spot in the 35th minute and Urby Emanuelson made it 5-0 just before the break.

In the second half, Suarez added a sixth on 70 minutes and the Uruguayan completed a hat-trick, again converting a penalty with eight minutes to go. Angelo Martha, who had caused the second spot kick, was sent off for his offense.

With four games to go, Ajax remain at just one point from second-placed FC Twente. The number-two spot gives access to the third preliminary round of the Champions League.

The only goal at the match between Heerenveen and Volendam was scored by Viktor Elm in the 52nd minute. Teammate Danijel Pranjic was sent off near full time.

Feyenoord are close to the top half of the table following a 5-1 win over Heracles Almelo. Roy Makaay score three goals, Danny Landzaat and Kelvin Leerdam each added one. Heracles’ only goal came from Bas Dost.

Dutch Cup: Heerenveen eliminate Feyenoord

January 21, 2009

While Feyenoord are trying to survive in the Dutch Eredivisie, the Rotterdam outfit couldn’t prevent being eliminated 0-3 by SC Heerenveen.

Only days after losing 3-1 to Heerenveen in the league, Feyenoord again stood no chance against the Frisiand. The hosts did try, but failed precision up front.

Swedish forward Viktor Elm opened the score on 37 minutes and added another in the 73rd. The third and final goal came from Roy Beerens with eight minutes left.

It is the first time since 2001 that the traditional top three teams, Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord, are all knocked out ahead of the tournament’s quarter final stage.
