Wolves rob Hull of precious points

January 30, 2010

Hull City remained in the Premier League relegation zone after twice squandering the lead in a 2-2 draw at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink gave Hull, who remained second bottom, an early lead only for Wolves, now a point above the bottom three, to draw level through Anthony Gardner’s farcical own-goal at the KC Stadium.

Stephen Hunt restored the Tigers’ lead from the penalty spot but there was still time for Matthew Jarvis to rescue a point for Wolves.

Former Celtic striker Vennegoor of Hesselink opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a 20-yard shot after the Dutchman had been played in by American forward Jozy Altodore, who had held off two defenders.

It was a lead that lasted until four minutes after half-time when Wolves drew level in comical fashion.

Hunt allowed Wolves’ Ronald Zubar to chase down a ball the Republic of Ireland midfielder felt was going out of play.

Zubar’s hopeful cross appeared easy enough for Gardner to clear but his sliced kick spiralled over Hull goalkeeper Boaz Myhill and into the net.

Minutes later, however, Zubar returned the favour when he clattered into Altidore and Hunt scored from the penalty spot.

But Hull were pegged back again when Matthew Jarvis’s right-footed shot beat Myhill in the 67th minute.

The visitors then had a chance to win it late on but Myhill saved well from new Wolves on-loan signing Geoffrey Mujangi Bia after a free-kick caused problems in the Tigers’ box.

Zaki set for Hull loan move

January 18, 2010

Egypt’s Amr Zaki is set to return to the English Premier League in a loan spell with Hull until the end of the season, subject to receiving a work permit, the top-flight strugglers said Monday.

Zaki, who scored 11 Premier League goals for Wigan during a loan spell last term, will be joining from Egyptian club Zamalek if the deal is approved.

Hull manager Phil Brown will hope Zaki’s latest stint in England is as productive as his last as the Tigers look to climb out of the relegation zone.

“We are pleased to confirm the loan signing of Amr Zaki from Zamalek FC,” a statement on Hull’s official website, www.hullcityafc.net, said Monday.

“The player yesterday (Sunday) signed a loan agreement until the end of the season to join Hull City AFC.

“As is the case with all non-EU (European Union) transfers, there are work permit and other red tape issues still to be confirmed, but we are expecting the player to return to England and join Hull City on Friday this week.

“The playing contracts are signed and confirmed, however the final details must be undertaken before the loan can commence.”

Zaki said he was looking forward to playing in the Premier League again.

“I’m happy to be back in the Premier League through Hull City,” he told his official website, www.amrzaky.com, on Sunday.

“Tigers are good side and I’m looking forward to do my best for the team.

“I want to thank both Phil Brown and (chairman) Adam Pearson for the faith they showed in me and my target is to repay this faith on the field by helping my team-mates to do the best for the club and for the fans.

“I’ll travel back to Cairo on Tuesday to finish some stuff then back to join my team on Thursday.”

Hull’s leading scorer in the league this season is Republic of Ireland midfielder Stephen Hunt with five.

Hull boss Brown furious at FA charge

December 24, 2009

Hull manager Phil Brown has hit out at the English Football Association after his club were charged with misconduct following last weekend’s brawl at Arsenal.

Brown’s team and Arsenal were both hit with the FA Charge of failing to control their players after a mass confrontation involving 21 of the 22 players on the field at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

The row started after Arsenal’s Samir Nasri appeared to tread on the ankle of Hull midfielder Richard Garcia late in the first half.

But Brown, whose side lost 3-0, has defended the reaction of his players and made it clear the club will be contesting the charge.

“There was an incident for some reason, and I can’t answer the accusations against Nasri. He decided to light the touchpaper,” Brown said.

“It was there for everybody to see. It needed to be dealt with more severely and hasn’t been.

“Why we are up for a charge I don’t know. I defend the players to the hilt. As far as I am concerned that lad has gone in there with the intent to start a fight, to start a ruck.

“Maybe it was because Arsenal were hitting a brick wall in terms of the way they were playing, I don’t know.

“We were doing our job to the best of our ability and maybe that’s why they’ve decided to light the touchpaper, I’ve no idea.

“For us to come under criticism yet again is absolutely scandalous, and we’ll be defending it.”

US striker Altidore ready for Hull bow

August 21, 2009

Hull’s US striker Jozy Altidore is set to make his Premier League debut in Saturday’s meeting with Bolton with the on-loan youngster from Spain’s Villarreal having missed the Tigers’ losses to Chelsea and Tottenham owing to red tape problems.

Craig Fagan is also in contention after recovering from a summer hernia operation but midfielder Dean Marney is still out with a knee injury while Jimmy Bullard and Ian Ashbee are long-term casualties.

Having just stayed up in their first top-flight season Hull are seeking to bounce back after their unlucky loss at Stamford Bridge and then a midweek home mauling by Spurs.

Hull sign Ireland winger Hunt

August 13, 2009

Hull City signed Republic of Ireland winger Stephen Hunt from Reading for an undisclosed fee on Thursday.

Hunt, 29, could make his Hull debut in Saturday’s Premier League opener at Chelsea after completing his move to the KC Stadium.

Although the transfer fee wasn’t revealed, it is believed the Tigers paid around three million pounds to sign the former Brentford player.

Reading director of football Nick Hammond confirmed on the club’s website: “Stephen Hunt has developed enormously as a player here, coming to us on a free transfer and going on to become an established international player.

“He has made it known for some time that he was ready for a new challenge, and this is a good move for all three parties. We wish him all the very best for the future.”

Hunt is Hull boss Phil Brown’s third capture of a frustrating transfer window after he recently landed Seyi Olofinjana and Jozy Altidore.

Brown, who was turned down by Fraizer Campbell, Marc-Antoine Fortune and Bobby Zamora earlier in the close-season, also hopes to sign Celta Vigo striker Kamel Ghilas.

Stoke midfielder Olofinjana joins Hull

August 6, 2009

Hull City signed Nigerian midfielder Seyi Olofinjana from fellow Premier League club Stoke on Thursday.

Olofinjana, who is believed to have cost three million pounds (five million dollars), agreed a four-year contract with Phil Brown’s Tigers after the 29-year-old turned down an approach from Monaco.

Hull also signed American international Jozy Altidore on a season-long loan from Villarreal, subject to a work permit, with a view to a permanent deal.

“Seyi Olofinjana joins the Tigers from Stoke City on a four-year deal. Meanwhile, striker Jozy Altidore arrives at the KC Stadium on a season-long loan deal from Spanish side Villarreal,” a statement on Hull’s website confirmed.

Hull not interested in Barton

July 18, 2009

Hull on Saturday dismissed reports linking them with controversial Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton.

Hull want to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season but say they are not planning to offer the 27-year-old a Premier League lifeline.

Assistant manager Brian Horton said: “Joey Barton is a very good footballer. I know him, I have done things with him in Manchester.

“He has obviously had issues and that is a shame because he can be a very good footballer but at this present time I don’t think it’s an area that really needs to be looked at.”

Hull have had a frustrating summer in the transfer market with three high-profile targets opt for other clubs.

They lost Fraizer Campbell and Marc-Antoine Fortune to Sunderland and Celtic respectively with an attempt to sign Michael Owen also came to nothing as Manchester United stepped in.

Horton added: “It is frustrating, we are trying like hell.

“But they have gone to three big clubs. If we were losing Joe Bloggs from Division Three it would be a different matter.

“We want to bring someone in but we need to have a bit of patience, things will evolve.

“It’s not the fact we are not trying to get better players in.”

Benitez says Liverpool can still win Premiership

April 26, 2009

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
HULL, England (AFP) – Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez insists his side can still win the Premier League title after watching them overcome Hull 3-1 at the KC Stadium.

Benitez is refusing to give up on his club’s hopes of winning their first championship in two decades, even though Manchester United restored their three- point lead at the top with a 5-2 victory over Tottenham in Saturday’s late game.

While United remain firm favourites, Benitez has urged Liverpool to complete a perfect finish to the season, starting with next Sunday’s home encounter with struggling Newcastle at Anfield.

Benitez will be boosted by the return to fitness of talismanic leader Steven Gerrard, who is poised to shake off a nagging groin problem as Liverpool aim to finish the campaign with four straight wins and hope United slip up.

The England international has missed the last four games but Benitez confirmed that he expected him to be available again for the visit of Alan Shearer’s side.

Goals either side of half-time from Xabi Alonso and Dirk Kuyt at the KC Stadium inspired Liverpool to a crucial victory.

Alonso struck in the 45th minute with a dipping volley to notch his fourth goal of the season before Kuyt helped himself to a second half brace as Hull’s relegation worries increased.

Geovanni pulled a goal back for the home side on 73 minutes to offer the hosts a slim hope of an unlikely fight-back but it was never going to be enough as Kuyt made it three in the final minute.

Hull’s misery was complete when Caleb Folan was shown a straight red card on the hour mark for kicking out at Martin Skrtel and he will now face an automatic three-match suspension.

Benitez has no such worries, however and remains in bullish mood as the race for the title enters the final few laps.

Benitez said: “Nothing is over. This was a good win because Hull made it hard for us but all we can do is keep winning and see what happens.

“I would like us to win every game we have left to play. That is all we can do. Stevie is making progress and we expect him to be back for the next game.

“We deserved to win so I am pleased with the three points. It was difficult and we had to work hard but I’m satisfied.

“We can still improve, but in football you never know. Winning before them (Manchester United) means we have done our job.”

Hull have now won just two of their last 25 league games and appear destined for relegation.

Their next game is a difficult trip to Aston Villa whilst Sir Alex Ferguson’s side visit the KC Stadium on the final afternoon of the season.

Despite the odds looking stacked against Hull staying up, Brown remains convinced his side can avoid relegation.

He is likely to discipline Irish international Folan with a club fine.

“The fact that we showed great commitment and better quality in the final third gives me no satisfaction whatsoever because we have lost the game. I’m not a good loser,” said Brown.

“We’ve kept our best for the best teams up until now but we need to start beating those around us. That will be the game-plan for the remaining four matches. It will be close.

“But we’ve let Liverpool off the hook. I’ve got no reasons or excuses for the sending off and have no complaints. It will be dealt with in house and this has killed us. Caleb has made life so much easier for them.”

Reds must rediscover defensive steel, says Reina

April 25, 2009

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
HULL, England (AFP) – Pepe Reina admits Liverpool have to re-discover their defensive steel to stand any chance of winning the Premier League.

Ahead of their trip to Hull, the Reds are relying on a serious slip by leaders Manchester United to let them back into the title race.

United capitalised on Liverpool’s 4-4 draw with Arsenal by beating Portsmouth 2-0 on Wednesday to move three points clear at the top with a game in hand.

Rafael Benitez’s side had forced themselves right back into contention with a run of five straight wins in the Premier League before having to settle for a point with the Gunners.

That impressive run has been based on a new-found attacking potency that has seen them score four or more goals in six of their last eight matches in all competitions.

But the downside of that has been a leakier defence and Spain goalkeeper Reina has let in 11 goals in his last four appearances.

Reina is desperate for Liverpool to continue with their free-scoring attitude but acknowledges they also have to find a way of being more solid at the back.

He said: “We are scoring a lot of goals but we have to try and improve in defence.

“Scoring goals is the most difficult thing in football but now we must sort some of the problems we’re having in defence.

“We’ve always had the balance between attack and defence. That’s why we’re always there in the Champions League and cup competitions, because we are a team with balance. We have to get back to this way.”

Despite United now looking clear favourites to retain their Premier League crown, Reina is adamant that Benitez’s players will fight on until the final game of the campaign.

He added: “We knew it would be difficult for United to drop points in two games, and now it’s even harder because they have to lose those games but we have to still believe and keep going until the end.

“It’s not worth looking at the fixture list. All we can do is win our games, so we don’t look at United’s fixtures. We just have to do our job and win our five remaining games.

“This club has been many, many years without being in this position going into the last five games.

“To be involved at this stage is beautiful, but to win the league would be massive, so we have to give our all.”

The Reds are hoping that captain Steven Gerrard will overcome a groin problem that has kept him out of their last three matches.

But the England midfielder is likely to miss out at the KC Stadium where Hull are desperate for points for a very different reason.

Phil Brown’s Tigers enjoyed an impressive start to the season but have won just once in 17 Premier League matches and are three points above the relegation zone.

In the first half of campaign, Hull won at Arsenal and Tottenham and have also drawn at Anfield and at Chelsea in their first season in the top flight.

And veteran midfielder George Boateng hopes his team-mates can use those performances as an inspiration against Benitez’s side.

He said: “We have been to places where people gave us no chance, like Arsenal where we won. What were the odds there?

“When we play against Liverpool no one will give us a chance but we can surprise them.

“Hopefully Tuesday’s game will have taken a lot of energy out of them but I look forward to it and the team does.”

Taylor salvages a point for struggling Newcastle

March 15, 2009

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

HULL, England (AFP) – Newcastle remain deep in relegation trouble despite salvaging a 1-1 draw at Hull on Saturday.

Only goal difference is keeping Newcastle outside the relegation zone after Magpies defender Steven Taylor cancelled out Geovanni’s early opener at the KC Stadium.

Newcastle, with manager Joe Kinnear still recovering from a triple heart bypass operation, have won just one of their last 11 league matches and sit two places above the bottom three.

There was a pre-match boost for Newcastle as England striker Michael Owen returned after five games out with an ankle injury.

But it was Hull who made the more lively start. The Tigers took the lead in the ninth minute through Geovanni after an inspired run from deep inside his own half by the former Barcelona player.

He picked up possession after a Newcastle attack broke down and burst forward to set Craig Fagan free down the left.

He then continued his run into the box and Fagan picked him out with an excellent cross which dipped over Sebastien Bassong. Geovanni headed firmly past Steve Harper for his seventh goal of the campaign but his first since November.

Newcastle responded through an effort from Obafemi Martins, who whipped a shot just over from inside the box.

Fagan, whose leg was broken in the reverse fixture last September, was booked for confronting Taylor following a clash between the pair.

Geovanni won a free-kick on the edge of the area after being clipped by Geremi and his curling effort was narrowly off-target.

Newcastle levelled against the run of play seven minutes before half-time when Butt crossed and Taylor flicked a volley over Matt Duke.

Daniel Cousin had a chance to restore Hull’s lead before the break but shot well wide.

Martins had a good chance on the volley soon after half-time but Hull skipper Ian Ashbee blocked.

Hull substitute Manucho, on at the break, was quickly into the action and forced Harper to save low down after being fed by Bernard Mendy.

A good run by Geremi then allowed Martins to set up Jonas Gutierrez but the Argentinian curled his effort over.

Newcastle switched off again and Mendy should have punished them after breaking clear down the right.

Manucho was unmarked in the box but the Frenchman badly mishit his cross and a relieved Harper was able to gather.

It proved to be a quiet return for Owen and after 72 ineffective minutes he was withdrawn by caretaker boss Chris Hughton.
