Benfica trash Vitoria Setubal

September 1, 2009

Benfica left a great impression in their third Liga Sagres match of the season, beating Vitoria Setubal eight goals to one.

The Lisbon outfit dominated through the start and went ahead with a goal from Javi Garcia in the 16th minute. Luisao added a second five minutes later and Oscar Cardozo converted a penalty in minute 28, 3-0.

Argentinian midfielder Pablo Aimar then made it 4-0 in the 35th minute, and the hosts needed only another minute for Ramires to add their fifth of the night.

And their trashing of Vitoria Setubal wasn’t even over at this point. Oscar Cardozo added another pair of goals in the 65th and 75th minutes, and Nuno Gomez made it 8-0 with six minutes to go.

Helder Barbosa scored a consolation goal for the guests in the last minute of regular time, for a 8-1 final score.

Benfica jump to second place thanks to this victory, at two points from leaders Sporting Braga.

The tall defender is happy to play for the Dutch club, so he said in an interview with PSV TV: “I am very happy. PSV is a big club and I want to adjust quickly.”

The 21-year-old, whose stay with PSV may be made permanent at the end of the season, teams up with fellow countryman Danko Lazovic, who joined PSV in 2007.

Hamburg land Swedish striker

July 18, 2009

Hamburger SV have landed Swedish forward Marcus Berg of FC Groningen, whose transfer seemed to be unlikely just hours earlier.

As the two clubs had difficulties agreeing terms, the Scandinavian became more and more likely to spend another season in the Netherlands. However, a deal was eventually made.

The 22-year-old Berg joined Groningen in 2007 and left a very positive impression with 33 goals in 56 games.

Although the height of the transfer wasn’t unveiled, Groningen do claim that it is their most lucrative sale in history.
