Grandel, three others out of Guadeloupe with injuries
July 6, 2009

OAKLAND – If Guadeloupe is going to repeat its semifinal outing in the 2007 Gold Cup, it will have to do it without four key players.
Goalkeepers Franck Grandel (shoulder) and Fabrice Mercury (hamstring), midfielder Ludovic Sylvestre (ankle), and defender Ronald Zubar (knee) are out with injuries.
All four are expected to miss Guadeloupe’s match against Panama Sunday.
Grandel, who was chosen the 2007 Gold Cup’s top goalkeeper and earned all-tournament team honors, has left Oakland for France where he is expected to rehabilitate with his new club Dijon.
Guadeloupe team officials said Grandel would have stayed had his shoulder been in better condition and would have waited to sign with Dijon.
Grandel didn’t have a club prior to being named to the Gold Cup roster. He’s considered one of the nation’s top players.
It is not clear who will replace Grandel in goal. Assistant coach Alex Parnasse said Marius Fausta and Yohann Bus are possible replacements for both injured goalkeepers.
“We don’t know who will start,” Parnasse said in French through an interpreter. “It will be a game-time decision.”
What is clear is that Fabien Jerome, a defender, and midfielder Larry Clavier are slated to join the team as replacements.
Despite losing the handful of players to injury, Guadeloupe remains confident.
After all, they are not the favorite to win Group C, which includes Mexico.
“Obviously because the players that were chosen, they were chosen for their quality and their experience,” Parnasse said. “So instead of now counting on the individual talent that was brought to this team, the players are going to have to bring themselves together and move forward.

USA routs Cuba 5-0 to open CONCACAF U-17 Championship; Honduras draws 1-1 with Canada
April 22, 2009
TIJUANA, Mexico –The United States opened the CONCACAF Under-17 championships with a convincing 5-0 win against Cuba while Honduras and Canada played to a 1-1 draw.
John McInerney scored twice while Sebastian Lleget, Luis Miguel Gil and Stefan Jerome added a goal for the Americans in the second match of a Group A double header Tuesday afternoon at Estadio Caliente.
The Americans unleashed the flurry of goals in the 29th minute when Jerome chipped in a loose ball with his left foot into the net for a 1-0 lead. Jerome took the ball after McInerney blasted a shot off the right post.
It was the second time a shot by McInerney jus missed. He hit the left post with a right-footed shot three minutes into the match, sent a header wide left and had a clear opportunity cleared by a defender after beating Cuban goalkeeper Odisnel Cope in the ninth minute.
“It’s always tough to get the first goal. You have to break them down first,” McInerey said. “We had plenty of opportunities, but luckily in the first goal Jerome was there to finish it.”
McInerney, who also scored two minutes into the second half, found the net in the 33rd minute via header from a cross by Luis Gil. That gave the Americans a 2-0 lead. Lleget added the United States’ third goal in the 38th minute for a 3-0 halftime lead.
Gil’s goal in the 62nd minute capped the scoring for the Americans.
“We didn’t imagine losing a game by that much,” Cuban coach Alexander Gonzalez said through a translator. “We didn’t match the American’s physical and tactical skills. We’ll have to forget about this game and focus on the next one.”
With the win, the U.S. moved atop the group with three points while Honduras and Canada were tied for second with a point each. Cuba, which faces Honduras on April 23, is last.
Hondura’s Hector Matute headed in Nestor Martinez’s cross in the 62nd minute to help his team to a draw.
Martinez sent a floating ball near the far post where it found Matute, who out-jumped a Canadian defender before directing the ball with his forehead past Canada goalkeeper Garrett Cyprus.
Matute briefly celebrated his goal and smiled as he was called off the field by Honduras coach Eugenio Umanzor to be replaced by Diego Rodriguez.
Canada took the lead in the 40th minute when Russell Teibert converted a penalty kick, sending the ball into the lower-right corner of the net.
Referee Francisco Chacon whistled Honduras defender Ever Alvarado for a foul on Canadian striker Sylla Abdoulaye about five meters into the penalty area where both players vied for the ball.
That was one of a handful of opportunities created by Canada in the first half of the Group A match. Perhaps the clearest chance came a minute after the opening kickoff when Jonathan Lao blasted a shot from about 20-yards out wide to the left.
Lao created another opportunity in the 30th minute. This time he sent a right-footed shot sailing above the cross bar.
Canada couldn’t find the net during a surge late in the match.
Tuesday’s matches were the first doubleheader of the eight-team tournament that runs through May 2.
The top two teams in each group advance to the semifinals and automatically earn a slot in the World Cup to be held in Nigeria.
The United States is the only to team to qualify for every World Cup since the tournament’s inception in 1985.
“We want to qualify to the World Cup (again),” U.S. coach Wilmer Cabrera said. “That’s why we’re here to get a spot. We’ve worked hard to be here. We want to respect the game and play as well as possible to earn a ticket.”
Mexico takes on Trinidad and Tobago Wednesday while Guatemala faces Costa Rica to open Group B play.

Ten-man Birmingham overcome the Wolves
April 7, 2009
LONDON (AFP) – Birmingham strengthened their hold on the second automatic promotion place to the Premiership on Monday as despite being reduced to 10 men they beat Championship leaders Wolves 2-0.
Goals by Cameron Jerome and Gary O’Connor moved Birmingham to within two points of Wolves with third-placed Reading six points adrift of the victors, though, they have a game in hand.
Birmingham looked to have given themselves too much to do when former Republic of Ireland international midfielder Lee Carsley was given a straight red card in the 37th minute for a dreadful foul on Chris Iwelumo, which saw him stretchered off.
However, the hosts gathered themselves together and took the lead deep into first-half injury time as Jerome scored with a scrappy effort.
Wolves barely threatened and Birmingham wrapped up the match when O’Connor scored in the 69th minute.
