Is Bullard’s celebration the best?
December 1, 2009
Jimmy Bullard’s re-enactment of Hull City manager Phil Brown lecturing his players on the field has been widely praised — even by Brown himself.
Bullard sat his team mates down and wagged his finger after scoring the equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Manchester City, where Brown had dished out his unsual telling off at halftime in a 5-1 defeat last term.
Is Bullard’s the best goal celebration you’ve seen? If not what was better? Marco Tardelli? Robbie Fowler? Bebeto?

UPDATE: Derby fever hits the predictions league
December 1, 2009

Monday update: You would think 14 games into the season we would have learnt who was likely to beat who in the Premier League. Sadly not. I did OK for a change but only Martyn Herman really covered himself in glory with two five pointers for Villa 1-1 Spurs and Manchester City collecting yet another draw against Hull City.
But I wouldn’t celebrate like Jimmy Bullard just yet, Martyn, you’re still third bottom.
So how did you do? Let us know in the comments. If you predicted at least one Drogba goal you can have a bonus point but I doubt anybody thought Rooney would get a hat-trick. As for Liverpool actually winning, well they had to get a flukey deflection sometime…
Updated Reuters Soccer Blog panel scores: Patrick Johnston 134, Mitch Phillips 118, Paul Radford 113, Mike Collett 105, Mark Meadows 99, Simon Evans 95, Kevin Fylan 91, Miles Evans 89, Neil Maidment 81, Julien Pretot 74, Asia Sports Desk 68, Martyn Herman 61, Justin Palmer 41, Sonia Oxley 31 (bonus point for getting predictions in early)

Friday post: Some bumper Premier League matches this weekend but will that mean we’ll be seeing bumper points totals in our predictions competition?
A Merseyside derby is probably the last match Liverpool’s Rafa Benitez wanted and if they lose, it will surely be the worse week of his managerial career. Club bosses say his job is safe but bottom side Portsmouth also gave their backing to Paul Hart just a few weeks ago…
New Pompey manager Avram Grant takes on Manchester United hoping it turns out better than the last time he met them in Moscow (see photo).
Oh, and I almost forgot, it’s Arsenal v Chelsea too! Let’s make that our double pointer this week. Remember you get one point for correct result and five for a correct score.
Here’s the panel’s latest standings with this weekend’s fixtures and their wild guesses underneath. Give us your predictions in the comments.

Brown: Victory over Everton was deserved
November 26, 2009

Hull City boss Phil Brown claimed the Tigers were well worth their enthralling victory over Everton despite coming close to throwing away two points.
Hull City still remain below Everton on goal difference but the mood in their camp is now different after last night’s 3-2 win over the Merseysiders, which was a hugely uplifting result.
Brown said, “I think it was a deserved win, even though Everton scored two goals in the second half,” said Brown.
“People might have been nervous at 3-2 but I wasn’t unduly worried, I thought we still had a grip on the game.
“Defensively we were very good in the first half. The second half was a different ball game and an own goal unhinges you to a certain extent.
“But we stuck at the task and thoroughly deserved the victory.”
Hull’s victory was also achieved without talisman Jimmy Bullard, who was rested ahead of Saturday’s trip to Manchester City.
Bullard was the catalyst for the Tigers’ recent encouraging results against Stoke and West Ham but is still being managed carefully after a long injury lay-off.
Brown said: “The lad’s in a new area of his rehabilitation.
“It was just a precautionary resting and fortunately it has worked for everybody.
“It now gives me a bit of a headache for Saturday, but they are the kind of headaches you want.”

Early goals take Hull away from drop zone
November 26, 2009

An early three-goal salvo gave Hull City three vital points in securing a 3-2 win over Everton in the English Premier League on Wednesday.
Stephen Hunt snatched the opener after nine minutes and Andy Dawson netted a free kick in the 20th minute before Dean Marney grabbed a third just before the half hour mark to leave Everton, themselves too close to the drop zone for comfort, shellshocked.
After the break the Merseysiders fought their way back into the contest and a comical own goal from Kamil Zayatte four minutes after the restart gave David Moyes’ men a sliver of hope.
Louis Saha converted a spotkick which Zayatte conceded by fouling the French striker midway through the second period but the Tigers then battened down the hatches and held on for a win which takes them to 15 points, level with the Toffees.
Everton now have just one win in their last 10 games while Hull boss Phil Brown’s gamble of resting experienced veteran Jimmy Bullard owing to a minor knee problem paid off.
Everton had won a League Cup encounter between the sides 4-0 at the KC Stadium earlier this season but were a pale shadow of themselves by comparison.
The win takes Hull up a notch to 15th level on points with Wednesday’s rivals and one clear of Wigan, trounced 9-1 at Spurs at the weekend.
Also on Wednesday, Fulham saw off Blackburn 3-0 as the Londoners moved into the top half of the table with goals from Erik Nevland just before the interval and a second-half brace from Dempsey.
Blackburn dropped back to 12th as their conquerors leapfrogged them.

Hull’s coach Brown unaffected by Duffen’s departure
October 29, 2009

Hull coach Phil Brown insists that Chairman Paul Duffen’s resignation does not change anything for him and strongly believes that his players will continue to support him.
At a brief press conference at Hull City’s Mill House Woods Lane training ground, Brown read out a speech in the ex-chairman’s honor who has always staunchly supported the team and stated that Duffen’s departure was for business reasons and has nothing to do with football results of the team.
“I don’t think it was on football results, I think it was on the business of football. It’s difficult to separate the two, but you do tend to run a business as well as a football club,” he told the press.
“I run the football side of things and I remain in charge for the game on Saturday.
I spoke for a long time with Paul Duffen and Russell Bartlett over the past couple of days and the replacement chairman will be announced after Saturday’s game.
It doesn’t affect me in terms of my position, as has been made reference to by Russell Bartlett in conversations I’ve had with him over the last 24 hours.”
Looking forward to the game at Burnley, Brown refused to be drawn on what impact a defeat would have on his and the teams future. He went on to claim that the team has shown improvement since October and is eager to turn out good results.
“When you bring eight new players in over the summer it takes time to gel, and October has shown they are starting to gel.
If we respond with another win, that shows we are going in the right direction,” says Brown.
On the playing front, he acknowledged that Boaz Myhill would miss the clash at Turf Moor, while Jimmy Bullard has still not recovered and they’ll play him only when he is 100 per cent fit.

Fulham enjoy birthday celebration at Hull´s expense
October 20, 2009

Fulham celebrated the club’s 130th anniversary by pulling clear of the Premier League’s relegation zone with a 2-0 win over fellow strugglers Hull at Craven Cottage on Monday.
Bobby Zamora’s first-half header and a Diomansy Kamara strike just after the hour mark settled a contest which Fulham might have won more comfortably and left the visitors mired in the drop zone.
Zamora’s opener came two minutes before the interval, the striker heading home following a fierce shot from Ireland winger Damien Duff, which Hull goalkeeper Boaz Myhill was unable to hold.
Duff also had a hand in Fulham’s second, releasing Zamora down the right to provide the pass from which Kamara put the outcome beyond doubt, possibly from a fractionally offside position at the back post.
Zamora and Kamara formed Fulham’s strike force after Andy Johnson was ruled out with a shoulder injury.
Former Fulham favourite Jimmy Bullard started on the bench for Hull, who initially looked the brighter of the two sides without ever threatening to give Mark Schwarzer much to do.
Duff, returning after a calf injury, soon began to exert his influence although it was Kamara who created Fulham’s first chance, setting up Zamora who contrived to clear the crossbar from the edge of the six yard box.
That was quickly followed by a low drive from Duff, which brought a smart save from Myhill at the near post in the first-half’s only other real moment of note before Zamora broke the deadline two minutes before the break.
Bullard, who joined Hull from Fulham for five million pounds only to get injured in his first match for his new club, was greeted with a cacophony of jeers when he entered the fray with just over half an hour left.
But the home side’s supporters were soon able to revert to celebrating their current players as Zamora’s pace carried him deep into the box to set up Kamara for Fulham’s second.
The Senegal international should have added to his and Fulham’s account but managed to fire wide from ten yards just before the impressive Duff departed to a standing ovation.

Kevin Kilbane insists Hull is his priority
October 18, 2009

Hull’s midfielder, Kevin Kilbane, insist that he would be looking whole-heartedly about beating Fulham on Monday night. However, he along with his countrymen Stephen Hunt and Paul McShane will take time out from the Tigers’ preparations for the evening kick-off by watching his country’s play-off draw.
Kilbane won his 100th cap for the Republic of Ireland last week and has been an integral part of the Irish side over the past decade. Admitting that the presentation of the 100 cap almost moved him to tears, he said “I’ve just been very fortunate the manager has picked me and I’ve managed to stay relatively injury-free throughout my whole career. But when you are in the side it gives you confidence and it is pleasing he has shown faith in me to play every game.”
Meanwhile, the most pressing concern for Hull is pulling themselves out of the bottom three of the Premier League. The Tigers lifted some of the pressure starting to grow on manager Phil Brown after a poor start to the season by beating Wigan a fortnight ago. That 2-1 success was only the club’s third in the league in 2009 after a last-gasp win at Fulham in March and a single-goal defeat of Bolton in August.
The winger insist that his top priority is Hull’s victory and recalling his last trip to Fulham said” It wasn’t a vintage performance but on the night we were very solid and I would certainly take the same again. It was my first win in a Hull City shirt, which was very pleasing for me.”
Kilbane, who has proved his versatility at Hull by playing in central and wide positions in defence and midfield, could be joined on the field on Monday by Jimmy Bullard.
Hull’s record signing is hoping to make his long-awaited comeback, almost nine months after suffering a serious knee injury, against his former club. Bullard has played just 37 minutes of first-team action since his £5million move from Fulham in January. “Certainly having him back on the training ground has been a big plus over the last few weeks. And he feels he has got something to prove because he got injured straight away,” adds Kilbane.

Bullard closes in on return
September 29, 2009

Hull midfielder Jimmy Bullard has been pencilled in to make his long-awaited return from injury next week.
Bullard has played just 37 minutes for the Tigers since signing in January due to a serious knee injury.
The 30-year-old is back in full training and boss Phil Brown is hoping he can get a run-out in next week’s reserve clash with Bolton – and then make his first-team return against former club Fulham on October 19.
“The plan of attack with Jimmy will mean his comeback game will probably be against Bolton in the reserves next Tuesday at North Ferriby,” Brown told the Hull Daily Mail.
“Hopefully, one or two supporters will get the chance to see him in a Hull City strip and fingers crossed, we’ll see where that takes us.
“We’ll have the game against Bolton and then a game against opposition behind closed doors the following week before he can then play some part in the Fulham game.
“We’ll have to be patient with him and understand that it might take three, four or five games before we see his best.
“But I’m hopeful of the fact Jimmy can come in and play a big part in a big season for us.”
The return of Bullard will provide a boost for Brown as pressure grows on him following their poor start to the season

US striker Altidore ready for Hull bow
August 21, 2009

Hull’s US striker Jozy Altidore is set to make his Premier League debut in Saturday’s meeting with Bolton with the on-loan youngster from Spain’s Villarreal having missed the Tigers’ losses to Chelsea and Tottenham owing to red tape problems.
Craig Fagan is also in contention after recovering from a summer hernia operation but midfielder Dean Marney is still out with a knee injury while Jimmy Bullard and Ian Ashbee are long-term casualties.
Having just stayed up in their first top-flight season Hull are seeking to bounce back after their unlucky loss at Stamford Bridge and then a midweek home mauling by Spurs.

Hull boss doesn´t regret Bullard deal
February 20, 2009
HULL, England (AFP) – Hull manager Phil Brown insists he has no regrets about paying a club record fee to sign Jimmy Bullard even though the injury-prone midfielder has been ruled out for the rest of the season.
Bullard, 30, cost Hull five million pounds (5.6 million euros) from Fulham during the January transfer window but he won’t feature for the Premier League club again this season following surgery on a knee injury.
The former Wigan star has played just 37 minutes for the Tigers and will be out for at least six months while he recovers from the operation.
Bullard had travelled to the United States for what the club hoped would be minor knee surgery this week but the injury has proved far worse than first feared.
He has a history of knee problems and was out for 16 months during his time at Fulham, but Hull insist the new injury is not related and Brown is convinced he was right to recommend the signing.
"We made a big decision – more to a point the chairman and board of directors made a big decision – to bring Jimmy to the club," Brown said.
"But I said to the chairman before the operation, ‘When Jimmy wakes up, he is a Hull City player’.
"That is a bonus for me. We have got him for four-and-a-half years, albeit with the start of that career on a treatment table, unfortunately for us.
"For me it wasn’t a gamble, it wasn’t a risk, to the extent people are talking about. For me it was an investment in an international player.
"There are no regrets whatsoever about signing Jimmy Bullard.
"I spoke to the lad, he’s distraught but very determined and very upbeat about his comeback.
"OK, it was a record signing but it is an opportunity for someone else to step into his boots."
