Cummings goal gives Jamaica 1-0 win over El Salvador
July 11, 2009

MIAMI – Omar Cummings scored with a flick of his right foot in the 70th minute and Jamaica beat El Salvador 1-0 Friday to keep alive its hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
The result clinched a berth in the final eight for Costa Rica, and left Jamaica third in the group with three points ahead of El Salvador, which was eliminated. Two teams from each of the three groups advance along with the two best third-place teams.
The Caribbean champion will have to wait for the results of the other two groups Saturday and Sunday to see if it advances.
Canada finished atop the group with seven points, three ahead Costa Rica. Jamaica finished ahead of El Salvador due to Friday’s victory.
Neither side created much in the game, generating only a handful of chances each in the finale of Group A.
Jamaica started with a bit more possession, but both sides seemed mired in a midfield battle on the artificial turf at FIU Stadium.
Cummings had probably what was the best chance for either team before the goal, working free near the top of the penalty area before unleashing a right-footed shot that Salvadoran goalkeeper Miguel Montes had to stretch to tip it wide of the far post.
Jamaica went ahead when Luton Shelton created space on the left, turned and curled a low, bouncing cross to the near post, where Cummings had worked inside Alexander Escobar and just managed to redirect the ball between Montes and the upright.
El Salvador, which would have advanced with a draw, had its lst chance in the third minute of injury time when Montes’ free kick from 19 yards struck the left post.

Gerba’s second-half goal leads Canada over Jamaica in Gold Cup opener
July 4, 2009

CARSON, California – Ali Gerba scored in the 75th minute to lead to Canada to a 1-0 win over Jamaica on Friday, kicking off the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Canadian defender Mike Klukowski took a loose ball in the middle of the field and sent a long elooping cross to the Toronto FC striker, who one-timed a strike past Jamaica goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.
The win in the first game of the doubleheader gave Canada three valuable points heading into its second match against El Salvador at Crew Stadium in Columbus on Tuesday. Costa Rica and El Salvador, both in the World Cup qualifying hexagonal, played in the second match of the evening.
The match was a reversal of the last meeting between Canada and Jamaica, when the Reggae Boyz won 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier that they had to win by a huge margin to advance to the final round.
Goaltending dominated as both Canada’s Greg Sutton and Ricketts produced several dramatic saves, especially in the second half.
Canada coach Stephen Hart’s decision to start the veteran Sutton ahead of Josh Wagenaar proved wise as the taller Sutton used his size to deny Jamaica repeatedly.
Sutton stopped Ricardo Fuller’s point-blank shot in the 65th minute and minutes made a leaping save to deny defender Damian Stewart.
Canada began with a possession game and used its one-touch passing in the middle to limit the athletic Jamaicans.
The keep-away strategy seemed to work, denying Jamaica the ability to exploit the flanks with its speed.
Jamaica was forced to counterattack, which resulted in two quality chances midway through the first half.
Canada’s more patient approach started to pay dividends late in the half.
Canada’s best and only real chance came when 2007 Gold Cup most valuable player Julian de Guzman sent a cross in off a free kick and Kevin McKenna one-timed it from 10 yards out that was tipped just over the bar by Ricketts.
Minutes later, De Guzman sent a cross to Patrice Bernier on the left. Bernier fired just wide of left post and just out of reach of Will Johnson, who was late onto the ball.
Play opened up consdiderably in the second half with both teams generating scoring chances before Gerba’s goal.
Referee Terry Vaughan issued six yellow cards, four to Jamaica (Claude Davis, Jermaine Johsnon, Luton Shelton, Demar Phillips, and O’Neil Thompson) and one to Canada (de Guzman).
Jamaica will try to regroup against Costa Rica in the other match on Tuesday.

Saints on verge of nadir after Pinnacle pulls out of deal
July 1, 2009

LONDON, (AFP) – Former FA Cup winners Southampton are on the verge of going out of business after The Pinnacle group – which included legendary Saints player Matt Le Tissier – withdrew their interest in buying the club on Tuesday.
Pinnacle’s interest waned once the Football League – the body that oversees the clubs outside the Premier League – insisted that they could not appeal against a 10 point penalty imposed last season which will see them start next season in League One minus 10 points.
This was imposed once the 1976 FA Cup winners – whose highest ever league finish was second in the old First Division in 1983-84 season – parent company went into administration in April.
The Administrator Mark Fry is now hoping to sell to another buyer and is understood to be in talks with a Swiss consortium.
Le Tissier confirmed on Tuesday the group has withdrawn from negotiations – amid fears that the club may now be only days away from going out of business.
“We’ve been trying ever so hard but we’ve been banging our head against a brick wall,” Le Tissier told BBC Radio Solent.
“I’m very sad, but hopeful that Mark Fry can find someone to take over the club. Everybody’s worried, we’ve all been working very hard but it’s getting to the point where it’s very desperate.”
Fry hinted last Friday that if no bids were forthcoming by the end of this week, he would have to consider winding the club up.
A statement issued on behalf on Mark Fry in response to Pinnacle’s withdrawal read: “We remain hopeful that a sale of the club will be completed in a short period of time.
“It is a complex transaction which involves numerous stakeholders and a satisfactory solution for all parties is not simple to achieve.
“It is positive news that the football club should be in a position to pay the wages this week.
“We are working to a very short timeframe but wish to reassure everyone we are working round the clock to ensure the club’s survival.”
Once a club has entered insolvency proceedings, the Football League must approve any takeover for the club’s League share to be returned, allowing them to play in the League and its associated competitions.
Last summer, the League refused to allow Rotherham, Bournemouth and Luton to begin the season unless they accepted points deductions following spells in administration – Luton failed to overcome such a heavy penalty and were relegated at the end of the season from the league.

Luton´s 89-year stay in Football League ends
April 13, 2009

LUTON, England (AFP) – Luton have lost their English Football League status after 89 years as Monday’s 0-0 draw against Chesterfield confirmed their relegation from League Two.
Luton enjoyed success in the English top flight in the 1980s, winning the League Cup final against Arsenal at Wembley in 1988 and reaching the final again the following year.
They won at Wembley only eight days ago, when 40,000 Luton fans watched Mick Harford’s team beat League One Scunthorpe in the Football League Trophy final.
Luton’s record this season is actually good enough for a mid-table finish but a 30-point deduction for financial infringements meant it was all but certain that the Hatters would finish in the bottom two.
Their fate was confirmed when Grimsby won at Notts County, leaving Luton facing non-league football in the Conference next season.

League orders inqury into Saints´ accounts
April 8, 2009
LONDON (AFP) – English Football League chiefs have ordered an independent probe into the accounts of Championship strugglers Southampton before deciding whether the club should face a 10-point penalty.
Last week the south coast side’s parent company, Southampton Leisure Holdings (SLH) called in the administrators.
League rules, designed to encourage sound financial management of the clubs in the three divisions below the lucrative Premier League, state that if a side goes into administration it will be docked 10 points.
But Saints insist there is a difference between SLH and the football club itself which means they should avoid a punishment that has already been handed out to the likes of Rotherham and Luton this season.
“The League Board has instructed its legal advisors to commission an independent forensic accountancy report in order to clarify the legal and financial position of the club, as a matter of urgency,” a League statement, issued after their board meeting here on Tuesday, said.
“The Board will reconvene once that report is available.”
Mark Fry, the joint administrator of SLH, said in response: “Subject to the scope of the report we welcome the Football League’s initiative in commissioning an independent report into the legal and financial position of the club ahead of any decision being made on the possibility of a 10-point deduction.
“In our view this indicates the situation will be reviewed thoroughly and independently ahead of any decision made. We are confident of a successful outcome because in our view no rules have been breached.”
Southampton, second-bottom in the Championship, may well be relegated to the third tier of English football by conventional means. But a 10 points deduction would seal their fate.
The potentially tricky scenario for the League is if they find in Southampton’s favour or impose a 10-point penalty ahead of the start of next season with the Saints having saved themselves from the drop.
That could spark a challenge from clubs who are also facing relegation into League One while a deduction, which would damage Saints’s prospect of finding a new buyer, might lead to legal action from the Hampshire side.
Southampton’s financial plight is largely due to the costs incurred in building a new 30,000-seat stadium, St Mary’s, which have proved unmanageable in the aftermath of the club’s 2005 relegation from the Premier League.

Shootout king Given saves City´s European dream
March 20, 2009
PARIS (AFP) – Shay Given rescued Manchester City’s faltering European dreams on Thursday when he pulled off two stunning penalty shootout saves to put his team into the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.
Big-spending City surrendered a 2-0 first leg, last 16 lead against Danish outsiders Aalborg in the last six minutes of normal time in the return tie.
Given then held his nerve to save from Thomas Augustinussen and former Sheffield United striker Luton Shelton while Ched Evans, Elano, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Richard Dunne were all successful with their spotkicks for Mark Hughes’s side.
City could have wrapped the tie up with eight minutes of normal time remaining in Denmark when Robinho had a fierce drive come back off the crossbar.
Two minutes later, Shelton gave the Danes hope when he stabbed home a right-wing cross. Then, in the last minute, Evans was penalised for handball and Michael Jakobsen coolly stroked home the penalty.
"It’s a great relief," said Irish international Given. "The tie should have been dead and buried after the first leg, but we did it the hard way.
"We’re delighted to get through. We could have made it easier for ourselves but we’re in the draw for the next round and that’s the most important thing."
Defending champions Zenit St Petersburg went out 2-1 on aggregate to Udinese, the only Italian side left in European competition this season, to become the fourth UEFA Cup winners to exit at the last 16 stage.
Zenit beat Udinese 1-0, but the Serie A side made sure of their place in Friday’s quarter-final draw courtesy of their 2-0 lead from the first leg.
Anatoliy Tymoshchuk was on target for Zenit in the 34th minute when he headed an Ivica Krizanac cross past Udinese goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.
Dynamo Kiev and Shakhtar Donetsk became the first Ukrainian sides to reach the last eight.
Dynamo lost 3-2 to fellow Ukrainians Metalist Kharkiv on the night but progressed on away goals having won the opening leg 1-0.
Metalist were ahead on the half-hour through Valentyn Sliusar with Jaja making it 2-0 after 56 minutes.
Goran Sabljic found the net on 68 minutes for Kiev to edge his side ahead on the away goals rule before Walter Anibal Acevedo swiftly made it 3-1 on the night for Metalist.
But an own goal from Andriy Berezovchuk eleven minutes from the end sent Kiev into the quarter-finals.
Shakhtar saw off 2005 champions CSKA Moscow 2-0 after trailing 1-0 from the first meeting with Brazilian imports Fernandinho, with a penalty, and Luiz Adriano scoring.
Galatasary, the 2004 champions, were knocked out, losing 3-2 at home to Hamburg and 4-3 on aggregate.
Peruvian international Jose Paolo Guerrero twice scored for the German visitors after Harry Kewell, with a 42nd-minute penalty, and Milan Baros’s 48th-minute strike seemed to have put the Turks in charge.
Guerrero struck in the 57th minute and then on the hour with Ivica Olic sealing Hamburg’s place in the last eight in the last minute.
Paris Saint Germain also made the quarter-finals with 1-0 win at Sporting Braga with Guillaume Hoarau heading in a Clement Chantome free-kick in the 81st minute just moments after coming on as a substitute.
On Wednesday, Marseille and Werder Bremen reached the next round with wins over Ajax and St Etienne respectively.

Fulham beat Bolton in first away win
March 15, 2009
LONDON (AFP) – Andrew Johnson, Simon Davies and Diomansy Kamara scored for Fulham in a 3-1 victory over Bolton to notch up their first away Premiership win of the season and stop the rot of two consecutive defeats.
Kevin Davies had equalised on the stroke of half-time for Bolton to notch up his 50th goal for the Trotters and remained the club’s top Premier League scorer with 11.
For the statisticians, Bolton’s Matthew Taylor made his 350th club career start, including matches at former clubs Luton and Portsmouth, Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer kept up his run of playing every Premiership match this season, and Johnson bagged his seventh goal of the season.
Neither keeper touched the ball in the opening 15 minutes and the first shot on goal came after the match had already been going for 30 minutes.
Bolton’s Andy O’Brien made a mistake to concede the first goal three minutes before the break when the centre-back poked the ball past keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen, and saw Fulham’s Johnson slide in at the far post to score.
But with seconds of the half remaining, Kevin Davies scored an equaliser. He chested down a long punt to teammate and namesake Mark Davies who returned the pass to the striker and he jinked his way into the area and fired home.
Then in the 56th minute, Simon Davies put Fulham ahead. He got into the box, took a tumble, then got back up and found Danny Murphy whose first shot rebounded off the crossbar. The ball broke back to Davies who hit a low volley into the net in Fulham’s first attack of the second half.
Kamara completed the scoring with Fulham’s third goal in the 88th minute following his low, left-foot drive to punish a foiled attempt by Bolton to clear the ball away.
