Juan Aurich qualify for group phase in Copa Libertadores
February 4, 2010

Peruvian team Juan Aurich secured a berth in the group phase of the Copa Libertadores thanks to a 4-1 aggregate victory over Estudiantes Tecos in the qualifying round.
Juan Aurich had already won their home match 2-0 and went on to win the second leg as well.
On an extremely wet pitch at Zapopan’s Tres de Marzo stadium, the Peruvian visitors took the lead after 44 minutes through Panamanian striker Luis Tejada.
And the guests removed any doubt in the 74th minute when Colombian Roberto Ciciliano made it 2-0. Both Ciciliano and Tejada joined Juan Aurich from Colombia’s Millonarios during the January transfer window.
Tecos, with a numeric advantage due to Willy Rivas’ red card in the 66th minute, pulled one back through Fredy Bareiro in minute 76 but the goal was to no avail.
Juan Aurich advance to Group 3, where they will meet with Estudiantes of Argentina, Bolivar of Bolivia and Alianza Lima of Peru.

Mechelen goalkeeper out for months
December 25, 2009

KV Mechelen goalkeeper Olivier Renard will be unavailable for three to four months after fracturing his cervical vertebrae in a Belgian Cup match on Wednesday.
Near the end of the match with Charleroi, Renard went down following a clash with an opponent. Initially the injury seemed mild but later tests point out that it was more serious than expected.
“He was very lucky that nothing shifted, but he will definitely be out for months, tactical director Fi van Hoof told Sporza.
The player himself also reacted, thanking fans of both Mechelen and Charleroi for their support.
Mechelen won the match 2-5 after extra time and advance to the quarter finals of the national Cup tournament. In the domestic league, Mechelen are currently in 11th place.

Mourinho job not dependent on European glory: Inter chief
December 18, 2009

Jose Mourinho does not have to win the Champions League to keep his job, Inter Milan administrative director Ernesto Paolillo says.
Prior to Inter’s last Champions League group game against Russian champions Rubin Kazan a week ago, the rumour mill had suggested that failure to reach the knockout stages would result in the former Chelsea boss’s departure at the season’s end.
Inter won that match 2-0 and secured second spot in the group behind title-holders Barcelona, but press speculation persists that Mourinho must lead the team into the latter stages of the competition or face the boot.
“I see no reason to change (coaches). We’re happy, we’re top of the league and just imagine if the coach’s job was still under question,” Paolillo told reporters.
“The Champions League is important but we know very well just how difficult it is to win.
“The one who wins it will come from among the best teams in Europe. Hence you can’t tie a coach’s future to winning that trophy, it’s everything together that counts.”
It is widely thought in Italy that Mourinho was brought to Inter to win the Champions League after his predecessor’s failure to shine in that competition.
Roberto Mancini was fired despite leading Inter to three successive Serie A titles because he could not guide the team to the business end of the Champions League.

Panathinaikos goalie says he was hit by air gun pellets in derby
December 2, 2009

Panathinaikos Athens goalie Alexandros Tzorvas Tuesday told a Piraeus prosecutor that he was the target of air gun pellets during Sunday’s derby match at Olympiakos Piraeus.
Tzorvas, who is also the Greek national team goalkeeper, told the prosecutor that he was hit several times and showed marks on his body and presented medical reports.
He said he had informed referee Anastasios Kakos about the attacks but that the official did not record the incidents in his match report.
The prosecutor has requested Olympiakos to provide security camera footage in order to find the culprit.
Panathinaikos on Tuesday sent a detailed letter of protest to the Greek league about the incident which also included a penknife being thrown on the pitch as well as numerous flares.
The start of the match was delayed for more than an hour as unruly Olympiakos fans kept the Panathinaikos team bus from arriving on time as about 300 of them clashed with riot-trained police outside the Karaiskakis Stadium where the derby was held.
The league is expected to punish Olympiakos for the incidents with a heavy fine and possibly forcing the team to play their next home match behind closed doors.
Olympiakos won the match 2-0 and moved ahead of Panathinaikos by one point at the top of the standings.

Sneijder primed for Serie A Milan derby
August 29, 2009

Wesley Sneijder could make his Inter Milan this weekend in the Milan derby against fierce rivals AC Milan.
Sneijder has completed a 15-million-euro switch from Real Madrid and will go straight into the first team reckoning as the champions look to bounce back from their opening home draw against Serie A new-boys Bari.
The 25-year-old Dutchman insists he is not taking a step down in his career despite being practically forced out of Madrid by the Real hierarchy.
“I don’t feel like it’s a defeat leaving Madrid as Inter are one of the biggest clubs in the world and have been champions of Italy for the last four years,” he told a Dutch newspaper.
“It will be a pleasure to work with (coach Jose) Mourinho. As for the derby, it’s the boss who will decide but I’m ready to start playing right away, I have no fitness problems.”
Mourinho signed Sneijder specifically to play the former Ajax man at the tip of his midfield diamond formation, behind front pair Samuel Eto’o and Diego Milito.
“If he manages to come through all the tests he could be an option and then obviously he’ll be in the squad,” said Mourinho.
Although this match comes early in the season it is still being seen as the first potential title-decider but also, more importantly, a test of just how good Milan really are following a turbulent summer in which they lost eight of 11 pre-season matches and failed to replace the Real Madrid-bound Kaka with a player even approaching his ability.
Even so, Mourinho expects his team’s cross-town rivals to be fired up for the clash.
“I’m convinced that Milan are desperate to play this match, the stadium will be full and it will be a great advert for the whole of Europe,” he added.
Inter have been involved in some mind-games leading up to the match, in which Milan are the nominal hosts at the San Siro, a ground shared by the two teams.
Marco Materazzi claimed Milan are the favourites because they lead Inter in the table having won their opening match, 2-1 at Siena.
He may have been joking but Milan forward Marco Borriello believes a victory for his team would open up an morale-boosting gap on their rivals.
“It’s early days but to have a five point lead would be very improtant,” he said.
“That would be a useful advantage so we can go in to other matches feeling calm and it’s a possibility that might not happen again in this championship.
“Even so, they are the favourites but beating Mourinho is an extra motivation.”
The other big match of the weekend sees Juventus travel to AS Roma in a match that could say a lot about either side’s title chances.
Juve were wasteful in their opening day 1-0 home success against Chievo while Roma fell to a 3-2 defeat at Genoa.
The capital-based side need to bounce back quickly to avoid losing touch with the top sides while a repeat of last season’s 4-1 victory at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico would assert Juve’s scudetto credentials.
“To win at Roma would really be a show of force capable of stamping our authority on the championship, even if we are only at the beginning,” said Juve centre-back Giorgio Chiellini.

Webb holds his hands up over United penalty
April 29, 2009

LONDON (AFP) – Top English referee Howard Webb conceded on Tuesday he had been wrong to award English Premier League leaders Manchester United a crucial penalty against Spurs last Saturday.
Spurs were leading 2-0 at the time when Webb – who only last week was appointed referee for May’s FA Cup final – pointed to the spot after judging Spurs ‘keeper Heurelho Gomes to have fouled Michael Carrick.
That proved to be the turning point as Spurs folded completely to end up on the wrong end of a 5-2 defeat.
“I’ve looked at it again and I think it was a mistake but we make these decisions honestly,” said the 37-year-old, who last year received death threats from Polish fans for awarding Euro 2008 co-hosts Austria a late penalty in their group game which they converted to force a 1-1 draw.
“It’s not always easy to see the way the play pans out from pitch level,” he told the BBC.
“I could see the Manchester United player touch the ball and saw him get clattered by the goalkeeper but didn’t see the extra deviation from the goalkeeper’s fingers touching the ball.
“I’m disappointed as I always strive for perfection. I’ll look at the tape in detail later in the week and try to avoid it happening again in the future.
“I never want to have a negative impact on a game and I get no pleasure from not reaching the high standards we set ourselves.
“But show me a man who’s never made a mistake and I’ll show you a man who’s done nothing.”
Webb admitted in January he had experienced the lowest moment of his career when during the Birmingham Wolves FA Cup third round tie he inadvertently deflected a pass by Birmingham’s Radhi Jaidi to Wolves striker Andy Keogh which led to Sam Vokes scoring – Wolves won the match 2-0.
“You want the world to swallow you up at that moment,” he said at the time.

Webb appointed FA Cup final referee
April 22, 2009

LONDON (AFP) – Howard Webb achieved a lifetime’s dream on Tuesday when he was appointed referee of the FA Cup final on May 30 between Everton and Chelsea.
The 37-year-old – who last year received death threats from irate Polish fans for awarding Euro 2008 co-hosts Austria a late penalty which they converted to force a 1-1 draw – said it was hard to believe he had been chosen.
“When I started out as a referee 20 years ago the FA Cup final was the absolute pinnacle even though it was a very distant dream,” he said.
“It was very unlikely to ever happen, but that it has is the realisation of a dream and I’m thrilled to bits.”
Webb – who has handed out just five red cards this season in 39 matches – was fourth official at the 2007 final and took charge of the semi-final between West Brom and Portsmouth last year.
Webb admitted in January he had experienced the lowest moment of his career when during the Birmingham Wolves FA Cup tie he inadvertently deflected a pass by Birmingham’s Radhi Jaidi to Wolves striker Andy Keogh which led to Sam Vokes scoring – Wolves won the match 2-0.
“You want the world to swallow you up at that moment,” he said at the time.

Adriano didn’t handle on purpose, says Italian FA
February 18, 2009
Brazilian striker Adriano will not be punished for scoring with his arm during Internazionale’s match with arch rivals AC Milan on Sunday.
The forward directed the ball into the net with his right arm in the first half, giving Inter a 1-0 lead. His team went on to win the match 2-1.
The Italian FA (FIGC) judged that Adriano didn’t handle the ball on purpose, and therefore shouldn’t have to undergo any consequences. Earlier this season, Alberto Gilardino of Fiorentina was suspended for two games after deliberately using his hand to score.
