Scotland boss Levein gets scout wish

January 8, 2010

Scotland’s new manager, Craig Levein, will have a scout to assist him after the Scottish Football Association (SFA) announced his former club colleague Michael Oliver had been appointed to the post.

For the past two years Oliver has worked at Scottish Premier League side Dundee United, where Levein was the manager until he was installed as Scotland boss last month in succession to the sacked George Burley.

“Hopefully I can have a good impact on the squad’s preparations and have a real go at creating a good picture for Craig of the teams he will face,” Oliver, who has also scouted for English Premier League sides Birmingham and Wigan, told www.scottishfa.co.uk following Thursday’s announcement by the SFA.

He added: “More often than not I’ll be watching club matches where a percentage of players involved are eligible for an international opponent.

“That is where you’ll see a player perform to their full potential and learn most about them, as opposed to an international friendly where not a lot is at stake,” explained Oliver, likely to be Levein’s only full-time member of staff.

Levein, whose first game in charge is the international friendly against the Czech Republic in March, said: “When I was working at club level I didn’t like it if I sent out my team and the opposition brought on a player who I hadn’t briefed my players about.

“When I was offered the job here I made it clear from the start that I wanted a full-time scout.

“Michael fits the role perfectly,” added Levein, who first met Oliver as a 19-year-old when he played alongside him at Scottish lower league side Cowdenbeath.

“He already has a lot of experience in a similar role, he is used to travelling around Europe watching players, and he has made a lot of good contacts along the way.

“For the past two years he was my scout at Dundee United. For me the most important thing is that Michael always gives me a definitive opinion about a player,” Levein explained.

Scotland have not qualified for the finals of a major tournament since the 1998 World Cup in France and Levein’s primary task is to get the team through to the 2012 European Championship finals in Poland and the Ukraine.

Big guns return as United face Hammers test

December 5, 2009

Sir Alex Ferguson is poised to recall his big guns when Manchester United travel to Upton Park on a mission to keep in touch with Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table.

Ferguson fielded a youthful side in the midweek League Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford and was rewarded as the likes of Danny Welbeck, Darron Gibson, Federico Macheda, Gabriel Obertan and Ritchie de Laet impressed in United’s comfortable passage to the semi-finals.

The Scot has been full of praise for those who have stepped up to the plate, and critical of those who who have dared to suggest the players in question might not meet the high standards required at Old Trafford.

Yet it is doubtful Ferguson will trust any of them enough to hand them regular exposure to the tough demands of the Premier League, mainly because United’s margin for error in the title race is minimal given the five-point advantage Chelsea currently hold at the top of the table.

The exception could be Gibson, whose two goals in midweek have presented Ferguson with a selection dilemma.

The Ireland midfielder has shown he is ready for a continued run in the team but the problem Ferguson faces is accommodating him in an area of the side where he is spoilt for choice.

The recent form of Anderson and Michael Carrick has dipped and these two could be the most vulnerable should Ferguson decide to hand Gibson another chance to impress in a line-up that will see Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Darren Fletcher and possibly Paul Scholes return.

Veteran defender Gary Neville believes the midweek display against Spurs was proof that United have another golden generation of young stars on their books and he argued that those on the fringes should now be considered an integral part of United’s first team squad.

“I don’t think they’re younger players,” Neville said. “They’re playing for their countries and they deserve to be there by right.

“They’re Premier League players of that quality, although they’re obviously developing.

“It’s going to be difficult to go all the way in the League Cup, but we’re in the semi-finals again and we want to continue to do well this year.”

Having struggled badly earlier in the season, West Ham have moved out of the relegation zone by winning two of their last four matches and, like Ferguson, manager Gianfranco Zola is reaping the benefit of giving homegrown young players their chance.

Few of the Hammers proteges have impressed more than winger Zavon Hines, who is relishing the chance to test himself against the champions.

The Jamaican-born forward is not lacking in confidence and insists he will not be overawed by the reputations of the players he will come up against on Saturday.

“I am looking forward to the game and it doesn’t matter who you play. When Arsenal came here we were really up for it and came back from 2-0 down so I’m happy to take on anyone.

“Every time I come on I feel happy because not a lot of people get into my position. Playing for West Ham is a big thing for me and every time I play I get more confidence.”

Hines is set to start on Saturday with West Ham’s England striker Carlton Cole sidelined by a knee ligament injury. Swiss midfielder Valon Behrami is also out and Zola is sweating on the availability of Matthew Upson, who is struggling with a hamstring problem.

ManUnited in search of Rovers´ revival

October 31, 2009

Sir Alex Ferguson wants a comprehensive performance from Manchester United against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday to prove they have from last weekend’s loss at Anfield.

Liverpool beat Premier League champions United 2-0 in a thunderous atmosphere on Merseyside to not only keep their own threadbare title ambitions alive but also end their arch-rivals’ 11-match unbeaten run.

A comfortable enough victory at Barnsley during the week put United into the last eight of the League Cup and seemed to prove the Liverpool result has not left any mental hangovers at Old Trafford.

“Part of the challenge is how you react to disappointment,” said Ferguson. “We lost 4-1 to Liverpool at home last season, which was a travesty but the players buckled down and we went on to win the league.”

During last Sunday’s Liverpool encounter, former Anfield star Michael Owen looked United?s most potent force and he also scored in the win at Barnsley.

The England striker may have been a surprise pre-season acquisition by Ferguson but he continues to impress at Old Trafford.

“Michael is always looking and always on the move,” United assistant manager Mike Phelan said. “That is the quality of Michael Owen and those qualities are of benefit to us.

“Michael has come to Manchester United as it a fresh challenge for him and we can use him as and when we need to use him.”

Blackburn will arrive at Old Trafford after one of the most testing weeks for a Premier League football club in recent memory due to the swine-flu problems that have affected their squad in the build-up to this encounter.

Two players missed last weekend’s 5-0 thrashing by Chelsea due to the condition, while a further player and two members of staff have also contracted the illness to disrupt Sam Allardyce’s plans.

The Rovers manager also knows he has significant problems on the pitch because his side is currently incapable of winning on the road, having lost their last nine encounters away from Ewood Park.

Allardyce admitted: “The difference between the team at Ewood and the team away from home is unrecognisable.

“If you beat Aston Villa with 10-men at home you are showing some real quality style, grit and determination.

“But if you then lose 6-2 and 5-0 at Arsenal and Chelsea then you see a team you just can’t recognise.

“It is a baffling problem that I need to resolve immediately before Manchester United.

“I have to resolve it because, if I don’t, it becomes like the ‘yips’ (a nervous and uncertain putting stroke) in golf if you like.

“The ‘yips’ can become a greater and greater problem as time goes on and on and on so we have to resolve it by the time we are at Old Trafford.”

He added: “We need to be organised and resilient enough to make sure that no matter what happens, with 10 minutes to go we are still in with a chance.”

United will be without Park Ji-sung (knee) while Darren Fletcher has yet to play since injuring his foot on international duty with Scotland but could be in contention.

Blackburn defender Christopher Samba is still struggling with swine-flu, but Rovers say they are monitoring the situation day-by-day.

Meanwhile right-back Pascal Chimbonda (calf) and midfielder Vince Grella (thigh) are also doubts.

Capello angers Italians with ultra comments

October 27, 2009

England coach Fabio Capello angered some of his fellow Italians on Monday when he said ultra hardcore fans were ruining Serie A.

“The ultras do what they want. In the stadium they insult everyone,” Capello told reporters at an Italian sports seminar, adding that stadiums in Spain and England were more family friendly.

Italian Olympic Committee chief Gianni Petrucci was one of a number of Italian sports officials to hit back, saying: “It is absolutely not true. It is easy to talk from up high.”

Capello also sympathised with Italy coach Marcello Lippi, who has been heavily criticised in the media for overlooking in-form Sampdoria playmaker Antonio Cassano.

“I have (Michael) Owen, I also have a tormentor. Everyone has one,” Capello said.

The England coach did not select Owen during World Cup qualification and the Manchester United striker has a difficult task to make it into the squad for South Africa 2010.

Ferguson banking on Owen´s big-match record

October 24, 2009

Alex Ferguson believes former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has it in him to heap fresh misery upon the Reds when he returns to Anfield with English champions Manchester United on Sunday.

The 29-year-old made his name on Merseyside by scoring 158 goals for Liverpool before joining Real Madrid for an ill-fated spell in Spain.

Injuries then diminished his impact at Newcastle, who were relegated from the Premier League last season and it was a surprise to many when Ferguson brought him to Old Trafford before the start of this campaign.

Owen’s transfer to their fiercest rivals will not sit well with Liverpool fans and their mood is unlikely to be improved if their one-time hero condemns Rafael Benitez’s side to a fifth straight defeat.

The England forward struck a dramatic derby winner against Manchester City last month and Ferguson said that if he repeated the trick against Liverpool, Owen’s place in United folklore would be secure.

“That will never be forgotten,” Ferguson said. “I don’t know if it puts him in the history books but it will certainly never be forgotten.

“He is only just starting with us. He has only been here a few months and I hope the boy is here for a long time,” the Scottish boss added.

“I think he is well capable of doing that. He is showing he is a terrific professional, he lives his life the right way and there are no complications with him,” Ferguson added.

Although Owen has mainly been used as a substitute by Ferguson, he could start at Anfield after fellow England forward Wayne Rooney sustained a calf injury during the midweek Champions League victory away to CSKA Moscow.

“When he (Owen) came on Wednesday, I think he did very well, his movement troubles opponents,” Ferguson said.

“There is nobody better at holding the line in the last third than him, he is very seldom offside.

“That is experience, of course, but also talent.”

“Michael is capable of scoring in any type of match at the highest level,” Ferguson added. “He has proved that, we knew that.

“Looking at his CV, I think any club in the world would have taken him.

“The issue was his playing record over the last two or three years and that obviously put some clubs off.

“But I spoke to one or two people about him – Nicky Butt (the former United midfielder who joined Newcastle) was almost forcing me to sign him, he had so much good to say about the lad.

“I think it was good advice and I took that on board.”

Rooney was due to have his fitness assessed on Saturday, the former Everton striker’s 24th birthday.

Carragher issues warning for Owen

September 25, 2009

Jamie Carragher expects former Liverpool striker Michael Owen to receive a frosty reception when he returns to Anfield with Manchester United next month.

Owen’s decision to join United in the summer on a free transfer has not gone down well with all Liverpool fans and Carragher knows the forward will be the focus of attention when the Red Devils make the trip to Merseyside on October 25.

“Our fans are usually brilliant with former players but he might get a cool reception,” Carragher told the October edition of Sky Sports Magazine. “That won’t bother him though.

“You can understand the fans’ point of view. He used to play for us and now he’s at our big rivals so of course there will be some reaction.

“That’s football and Michael will know that.

“At the same time, Michael has got his own career to think about. He wants to get his name back up there, he wants to play Champions League football and get into the World Cup squad.

“The move gives him that opportunity. It will upset some fans but that’s football.

“He’s a mate of mine so I suppose I have to wish him well but only to a certain extent.”

Carragher admits he was shocked by Owen’s move to Old Trafford after the end of his contract at Newcastle.

“I was a bit [surprised]. Not because I ever doubt Michael’s ability but it was just so out of the blue. It happened so quickly,” he added.

“One minute you’re wondering where he’ll end up and the next he’s at Old Trafford.”

Owen has helped endear himself to the United faithful with a dramatic late winner against local rivals Manchester City and Carragher knows he will face a tough task keeping his former team-mate quiet if they come up against each other next month.

“When I’ve played against him he’s been kept fairly quiet but – and no disrespect to Newcastle – he wasn’t getting the service and it’ll be a harder experience when he’s in United’s line-up,” added Carragher.

Plucky APOEL sink Copenhagen in thriller

August 27, 2009

Cypriot international Chrysis Michael played a captain’s role here Thursday night by bagging a brace to ensure Cyprus minnows APOEL Nicosia reached the Champions League groups following a 3-1 win over Copenhagen.

The Cypriot outfit overturned a 1-0 away defeat in Denmark to win the tie 3-2 on aggregate and put Cyprus back on the European map.

APOEL got off to a flying start with Polish midfielder Kamil Kosowski catching the defence square and volleying home from six yards after chesting down a lofted through ball from Cypriot international Costas Charalambides.

The Danish visitors were shell-shocked by the early goal with nervy defenders unsure of themselves and making unnecessary errors.

And it was a reckless challenge by Zdenek Pospech inside the area that enabled APOEL to go two up on 18 minutes when Michael calmly converted from the penalty spot.

Just when Copenhagen seemed to be sinking without trace Dame N’Doye pegged back the score with a vital away goal four minutes later, scoring with a downward header as APOEL failed to deal with a low cross into the box.

But the scoring didn’t finish there, during an entertaining first half, when Michael scored his second with a diving header after an inch perfect Charalambides cross.

Copenhagen almost mustered an instant reply but a Zanka Jorgensen effort was cleared off the line as the interval beckoned.

The Danes pushed for another away goal after the break but William Kvist had a shot smartly tipped over by reliable Greek keeper Dionisis Chiotis. Striker Ailton Almeida and sub Jasper Gronkjaer posed a constant threat as Copenhagen piled on the pressure but the Nicosians held firm to register a famous victory.

Serb coach Ivan Jovanovic had called for a superhuman effort from his team to reach the next stage and emulate Anorthosis Famagusta, who became the first Cyprus side to reach the Champions League groups last season.

And a full house of 22,000 home fans created a noisy atmosphere at the GSP stadium in the hope APOEL could achieve a landmark by reaching the next phase in a contest billed as the club’s most important in its 83-year history.

The hosts had only lost one European tie at home in the past six years and set about their task – in clawing back a 1-0 deficit – with gusto.

The Danish champions seemed to struggle in the humid conditions with night time temperatures still a balmy 27 degrees Celsius – there was a water break with only 15 minutes gone.

APOEL have won more league titles than their rivals but a tilt at Champions League glory is what their passionate fans can now look forward to in the coming months.

Fergie expects 100-goal Rooney to get even better

August 23, 2009

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Wayne Rooney will score “many more” for Manchester United after he joined a select band of players to net 100 goals for the club.

Rooney reached the milestone after opening the scoring during his side’s 5-0 victory at Wigan on Saturday.

The England striker ended the match with two goals as United’s season exploded into life after a low key start, which included a surprise 1-0 defeat at newly-promoted Burnley.

“It’s great for Wayne,” said Ferguson after United made it two wins from their first three Premier League games.

“He’s still a young lad and some players are at a club for many years and don’t reach that total.

“Because of his age I’m sure he’ll go on and score many more goals for us. He’s a very important player for us.”

United paid Everton 20 million pounds for Rooney in 2004 ago but the 23-year-old has easily repaid that fee over the years.

He has shone from the moment he opened his United goal account with a hat-trick against Fenerbahce in the Champions League at Old Trafford.

Rooney could have left the DW Stadium with four goals but for two fine saves from Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland.

Ferguson also singled out Michael Owen for praise after the former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker came off the bench to score his first Premier League goal in a United shirt.

Owen, a free signing from Newcastle, produced a fine finish for his side’s fourth goal which will have done his chances of earning an England recall no harm at all.

“Strikers have to score and when they don’t they think it’s the end of the world,” added Ferguson.

“Michael needed a goal. It was a fantastic goal. He has proved over the last decade that he is one of the best strikers in England.”

United looked set for a frustrating afternoon after failing to score in the first half at Wigan.

But they moved up a gear in the second half, with Dimitar Berbatov’s well-taken effort and a Nani strike adding to the goals from Rooney and Owen.

It was the perfect response after the embarrassment of losing to Burnley four days earlier.

“It was a really good result and performance,” added Ferguson.

“The reality is Wednesday was disappointing. But we’re not going to kill ourselves because of it.

“We’ve got to be prepared for setbacks. It shouldn’t have happened but it did happen. But we’ve done something about it.”

This was Wigan’s ninth top-flight game against United and they were still searching for a first win over over their north west neighbours after eight straight defeats.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez admitted his side had been taught a lesson.

“The big difference for me was conceding the first goal,” said Martinez. “That was a bit too sloppy for my liking.

“Mentally we left ourselves a bit too exposed. We’ve got to make sure we learn our lesson.”

Martinez believes Mohamed Diame will make a big impact at Wigan. The French midfielder made his debut after joining from Spanish side Rayo Vallecano.

“Mohamed’s been training with us a few days,” added Martinez. “He’s going to be a big player for us.”

Fergie anticipating Berbatov and Owen goal spree

August 22, 2009

Sir Alex Ferguson expects Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen to answer the critics and re-discover their goal scoring form as Manchester United battle to overcome an indifferent start to the new campaign.

United fell to a surprise midweek defeat at Burnley, meaning that the opening two matches, against promoted Birmingham and Burnley, had seen them score just one goal.

Observers have naturally noted that Cristiano Ronaldo, and his prodigious goal scoring talents, have not been directly replaced by Ferguson this summer and that Owen, whose own career was hardly at its peak following an injury-plagued spell with relegated Newcastle, was the only significant addition to the attacking corps.

Bulgarian Berbatov also has much to prove after scoring just nine times in 33 Premier League games last season following his 30.75 million pound transfer from Tottenham.

But Ferguson has confirmed that he will not be adding to his current squad in the ten days that remain in the transfer window and that he has faith in Owen and Berbatov finally discovering the kind of form to match their reputations.

“Dimitar would like to score a goal, strikers are like that,” said Ferguson.

“He is no different from Michael Owen or Wayne Rooney. Strikers always feel as if scoring is the most important thing.

“Michael is exactly the same as Dimitar, he could do with a goal. He had two (chances) on Wednesday and should have scored both of them. He knows that. He was unlucky and he will be wanting that goal.

“There’s no question about it that his movement and positional play in the last third is very, very good. We are just waiting on that goal that will set him off. I am sure about that.”

Owen, 29, is also facing an uphill battle to force his way back into Fabio Capello’s England squad head of next summer’s World Cup Finals in South Africa, although Ferguson does not want his new striker focusing on international goals.

“Forget the England thing at the moment,” said Ferguson. “Whatever he does with us will be the road for him (to England). If he does well with us, then England will be there for him.’”

Ferguson has downplayed the significance of the midweek defeat at Burnley, pointing to the fact that his side are traditionally slow starters in a Premier League campaign.

MANCHESTER, England (AFP)

However, having seen United win last season’s title with 90 points and Liverpool finish second despite suffering just two defeats, the veteran manager accepts there is not much scope for the defending champions to lose more games.

“That’s been the way this league has been for the past few years,” said Ferguson. “There’s not much leeway.

“Last season we had a points total of 90 and that is about average in this particular league. Even though we say it is the most competitive league, you still have to think about 90 (points) as the winner.

“Liverpool’s 86, when they were second last year, was an exceptional total, too. Every season we keep saying it is tighter and harder, but none the less you have to think about that 90-point total and I don’t think it will change this year.”
