AZ Alkmaar escape in Dutch Cup
October 29, 2009

AZ Alkmaar needed extra time to take distance from amateur side Spakenburg in the Dutch Cup, while PSV Eindhoven advanced after an away win at Roda JC.
Defending league champions AZ had an extremely difficult time in their home match with Spakenburg, who took an early lead through Thijs Houwing.
It took until the 51st minute for substitute Pontus Wernbloom to equalize, after which Stijn Schaars made it 2-1 in minute 76. Against all expectations however, Christy Bonevacio leveled late on to force extra time.
But in extra time, AZ clearly had more energy than their opponents. Wernbloom, Nick van der Velden and Mounir El Hamdaoui scored for a 5-2 win.
PSV Eindhoven never impressed in the match at Roda JC, but walked away with a 0-2 win. Stanislav Manolev netted the opening goal in the 32nd minute, and Jonathan Reis added a second in the 78th.
FC Twente left it until late to increase the gap with amateur team Capelle. A goal from Luuk de Jong gave Steve McClaren’s men a lead in the 28th minute, but it took until the 88th minute for De Jong to add a second. Nikita Rukavytsya went on to make it 3-0 in added time.
The draw for the round of sixteen will be performed on Thursday, following the match between Dordrecht and Ajax.

Da Silva´s late show forces Arsenal to settle for a point
October 21, 2009

Arsenal were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against AZ Alkmaar in Tuesday’s Champions League clash as the Dutch champions snatched a last-gasp equaliser.
Arsene Wenger’s side were within seconds of securing their third successive Group H victory after Cesc Fabregas’s first half goal.
But David Mendes Da Silva punished the Gunners for a lacklustre second half display when he struck deep into stoppage time at the DSB Stadium.
Wenger had already claimed he wouldn’t pause to celebrate his 60th birthday on Thursday and the French coach has even less reason to break out the party hats now.
The north Londoners are still firmly on course for the knockout stages, but they have more work to do before they can be sure of finishing as group winners.
Wenger once again opted to keep faith with young Italian goalkeeper Vito Mannone ahead of Manuel Almunia, but the Gunners boss was without injured wingers Theo Walcott and Tomas Rosicky.
Although AZ boasted an impressive European home record of just one defeat in 34 home matches, Arsenal arrived in Holland on a high after seven successive wins in all competitions.
In stark contrast, Ronald Koeman’s Dutch champions, who had taken just one point from their first two group matches, were reeling from the news that the club’s owner Dirk Scheringa had been declared bankrupt on Monday.
Koeman could take heart from a famous Champions League win over Arsenal when he was in charge at PSV Eindhoven two years ago.
But it was Arsenal who made the early running. Robin van Persie had scored five goals in his previous six games and should have added to that tally in the ninth minute from Abou Diaby’s cross.
Van Persie’s finish didn’t match the quality of the incisive attack though and he shot straight at Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero.
AZ created their first threat when Moussa Dembele fed Mounir El Hamdaoui on the edge of the Arsenal penalty area, but his shot didn’t test Mannone.
After a period of stalemate as both sides struggled to find their rhythm, Arsenal were gifted the lead in the 36th minute.
Niklas Moisander’s careless control allowed Andrey Arshavin to play in van Persie down the left side of AZ’s penalty area. Van Persie picked out Fabregas and the Arsenal captain dispatched a cool strike past Romero for his fifth goal of the season.
Romero almost presented Arsenal with a second goal before half-time when he allowed van Persie’s long-range effort to skim off his gloves and just past a post.
There was little repeat of that flurry of goalmouth action in the second half as Arsenal settled for keeping possession without ever really promising a second goal.
Van Persie forced Romero to make a fine save from a low free-kick but AZ gradually began to realise there was little to fear from Arsenal in this mood and they poured forward in the closing stages.
Diaby almost deflected a cross into his own net as the Gunners began to creak, then Hector Moreno squandered a glorious chance to equalise.
Moreno had the goal at his mercy from no more than six yards, only to head wide via a team-mate’s leg.
Arsenal appealed in vain for a penalty when Kew Jaliens got in a tangle and appeared to foul substitute Carlos Vela.
But they were made to pay for their lethargic performance in the third minute of stoppage time.
Arsenal’s defence stood statuesque as Graziano Pelle flicked on a high ball towards Da Silva, who was perfectly placed to lash a volley past Mannone and end Arsenal’s winning run.

NKufo leads Twente past AZ in Dutch league
October 18, 2009

Eredivisie leaders FC Twente left it until late to score a winning goal against defending champions AZ Alkmaar, winning the Dutch top clash 3-2.
Former AZ midfielder Kenneth Perez put Twente in the lead after 36 minutes, but the away side turned things around through Mounir El Hamdaoui (57th) and an own goal from Peter Wisgerhof three minutes later.
Costa Rican Bryan Ruiz immediately equalized however and Blaise NKufo made it 3-2 near the full time whistle.
PSV struggled to a 1-0 win over Heerenveen at Eindhoven’s Philips stadium, where Danko Lazovic scored the only goal of the match with just nine minutes left to play.
Ajax had an easier night against troubled Willem II. Eyong Enoh netted just before the break, and Miralem Sulejmani, Marko Pantelic and Luis Suarez found the target in the second half for a 4-0 victory. Leonardo Veloso conceded a second yellow card for Willem II in minute 80.

Disastrous season start for Dutch champions AZ Alkmaar
August 2, 2009

AZ Alkmaar have lost their first match of the season 3-2 to Heracles Almelo, and had two players sent off in the process.
The Dutch champions, now led by manager Ronald Koeman, conceded an opening goal from Everton after just seven minutes. Willie Overtoom beat keeper Romero for 2-0 shortly after the break and Mark-Jan Fledderus converted a free kick in the 62nd minute for a comfortable 3-0 lead.
AZ did strike back with two goals in one minute. Graziano Pelle made it 3-1 in the 71st minute and Mounir El Hamdaoui netted from close range 30 seconda later.
But instead of scoring an equaliser, AZ couldn’t control themselves and lost both Gill Swerts and Pelle to red cards in the final minutes.
It is the first time since 2000 that a defending Dutch champion loses its opening game.

Netherlands: Alkmaar win, Lazovic saves PSV
February 22, 2009
AZ Alkmaar added another three points to their season tally as the Dutch title continues to near, while defending champions PSV Eindhoven scored late to earn a small win at FC Groningen.
AZ travelled to face Heracles Almelo, who are dangerously close to the relegation zone. The man that made the difference was Mounir El Hamdaoui, who scored in the 53rd and 94th minutes to earn his side a 0-2 victory.
The match between Groningen and PSV had 0-0 written all over it, but the reigning champions made the difference three minutes into added time when Serbian Danko Lazovic netted for 0-1 to silence the home fans.
Second-placed FC Twente visit Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday, in an attempt to bring the gap with AZ back to nine points.

Alkmaar keep winning, Twente move into second place
February 5, 2009
AZ Alkmaar added another win to their account, beating Roda JC 1-0 at DSB Stadium. FC Twente move into second place thanks to a 4-1 win over NAC Breda.
Mounir El Hamdaoui scored the only goal of the match between AZ and Roda after 76 minutes.
Louis van Gaal’s side now has an 11-point advantage over Ajax but a new rival has appeared as Twente are the new numbers two in the Dutch league, trailing the leaders by nine points.
Marko Arnautovich, Peter Wisgerhof, Eljero Elia and Romano Denneboom scored for the home side, and only Fouad Idabdelhay could do something back for the visitors.
In the 100th Rotterdam derby, Feyenoord beat Sparta 1-0 thanks to a first-half goal from Diego Biseswar.

AZ Alkmaar extend Dutch lead
February 2, 2009
AZ Alkmaar extended their Eredivisie lead to nine points while PSV Eindhoven easily won their first match without manager Huub Stevens.
AZ travelled to Rotterdam to face Sparta and Moussa Dembele opened the score after 65 minutes. The second and final goal came from Mounir El Hamdaoui with five minutes to play.
Thanks to this win, AZ are now nine points ahead of Ajax who lost to Heerenveen on Saturday.
PSV Eindhoven, without manager Huub Stevens who resigned earlier this week, easily beat De Graafschap 0-3. Ibrahim Affelay scored twice and Finnish Ola Toivonen took care of the remaining goal.
Feyenoord Rotterdam crashed to a 1-0 defeat by NEC Nijmegen, led by future Feyenoord manager Mario Been. The defeat was extra painful as Milano Koenders scored the only goal in the 93rd minute.
