Rubin Kazan defend lead in Russia
October 18, 2009

Rubin Kazan avoided a third consecutive defeat on Saturday, and in the process defended their first place in the Russian league.
Gokdeniz Karadeniz put the defending champions in the lead after 31 minutes against FK Khimki, and Alan Kasaev made it 2-0 ten minutes after the break.
Alexander Antipenko pulled one back late on, but it wasn’t good enough for the visiting side. As result of this win, Rubin extend the advantage over second-placed Spartak Moscow to four points, although the latter still have to play against local rivals Lokomotiv Moscow on Sunday.
CSKA Moscow dropped two valuable points at Spartak Nalchik, being held to a 1-1 draw. The Muscovites did score an early goal through Milos Krasic in the third minute, but Alexander Amisulashvili leveled in minute 26.
CSKA now risk dropping from shared third to fifth position.

Zenit beat CSKA in Russian top clash
September 26, 2009

CSKA Moscow’s title hopes were handed a severe blow as the Muscovites crashed to a 2-0 defeat by Zenit St. Petersburg. The latter move into second place, CSKA drop to fourth.
The referee handed Zenit a penalty just before the break, and Mateja Kezman made no mistake from the spot.
A goal from Vladimir Bystrov doubled the gap in the 87th minute and allowed the home side to sit back for the remaining few minutes of the match.
Zenit are now second at seven points from leaders Rubin Kazan, but may be surpassed again on Sunday when Spartak Moscow host Tom Tomsk in the capital city.

UEFA Cup winners Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine will clash with Romanian debutants FC Timisoara, while Anderlecht are up against newcomers Sivasspor from Turkey.
Sparta Prague and Panathinaikos come face to face and Portugal’s Sporting take on FC Twente of the Netherlands.
Under UEFA’s new seeding pattern for the tournament, clubs which do not qualify directly into the group stage have two ways of reaching the core part of the competition.

The other, known as the “best placed path” is for the remainder – named in the ties on July 28/29 and August 4/5.
The winners of the five best-placed path ties will face one of Arsenal, Lyon, Stuttgart, Fiorentina and Atletico Madrid in the play-off round.
For Celtic, their July 29 home game against the Muscovites will be new manager Tony Mowbray’s first competitive game in charge.
The Russian side finished third in the league last season, while they sit seventh in the current campaign after 13 matches of the Russian season.
The last time Celtic played Russian opposition was two years ago when they faced Spartak Moscow in a similar stage of European club football’s showpiece tournament.
After a 1-1 draw in the Russian capital, the sides fought out a 1-1 draw at Celtic Park, with the Hoops progressing to the group stages of the competition following a dramatic penalty shoot-out, with Artur Boruc the hero on the night.

Zico set to take over at CSKA Moscow
January 10, 2009
MOSCOW (SW) – Brazilian manager Zico is about to add yet another adventure to his career, as he is ready to sign a deal with Russian giants CSKA Moscow.
Zico is to replace Valery Gazzaev, who recently resigned from his position.
The 55-year-old Brazilian has a rather exotic resume, having coached Japanese side Kashima Antlers before taking the reigns at the country’s national team. In 2006, Zico moved to Fenerbahce and in September 2008 he tried his luck at Uzbek side Bunyodkor, whom he recently led to a domestic league title.
"I expect to sign," Zico told Brazilian newspaper O Globo. "But there are still a few small things that need to be solved."
CSKA have been going through one of their best spells in history. Under Gazzaev, the Muscovites won three national championships and the UEFA Cup in 2005.
