Domenech ridicules bonus claims

November 24, 2009

France coach Raymond Domenech on Monday dismissed claims that he had received a bonus of 862,000 euros for successfully guiding the side to next year’s World Cup finals.

The combative 57-year-old – whose team reached the finals in controversial circumstances last Wednesday as Thierry Henry’s double handball set up the decisive goal in the 2-1 aggregate victory over the Republic of Ireland – told France Bleu that France Football’s claims over his bonus were way over the mark.

“The figure they cite is totally astounding,” said Domenech, who has never won over the French fans despite taking the team to the 2006 World Cup final.

“If it really was that, I would be as happy as anything.

“But it is way over the mark. I won’t even try and contradict the information because it is their usual editorial line. It is a lie. Money is not my motivation.

“If I was coach of a club, I would be earning 10-times the amount I am at the moment.

“It is not a question of money. It was Roger Lemerre (France coach from 1998-2002) who said that ‘We have one function, one real role, to be coach of France, that is enough’. I would do it for free, it is an honour to have such a post.”

Domenech said that football treated its best paid people with less respect than other sports.

“In tennis, one hears of this and that tournament with astonishing prizemoney. In motorsport the wages are astronomical. In golf, the more money one wins the more one is respected. In football it is the reverse.

“One is given the impression that those who make money in football are cheating.

“It is astonishing.”

Chelsea boss Hiddink pleads for video replay

May 10, 2009

LONDON (AFP) – Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink, still reeling from his team’s stormy Champions League exit, wants video technology introduced to help referees make the right call in contentious decisions.

Norwegian referee Tom Henning Ovrebo turned down several strong appeals for Chelsea penalties during the 1-1 draw with Barcelona at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, a result which put the Spanish giants into the final.

“In other sports like rugby and American football they have the ability to use technology at vital moments,” said Hiddink.

“Everyone waits five seconds for the video referee before making a decision. It can be done only on key moments that make a difference to the outcome of the game otherwise it would stop the game too much.

“The video referee must have authority to overrule the first man in charge. It’s a fact that if technology had been in use we would be in the Champions League final now.

“It would help a lot what is a difficult job for the referee when they have to make crucial decisions. It’s up to UEFA whether they act.”

Platini wants extra refs not video replays

February 18, 2009

BRUSSELS (AP)—UEFA chief Michel Platini is calling for world soccer to add two more referees to reduce officiating mistakes, rather than backing the use of video replays.

Platini said Wednesday that two more referees would catch “99 percent of the unacceptable mistakes” and would not delay play like video replays in other sports.

The five-official system will be taken up by the rule-making International Football Association Board—made up of representatives from FIFA and the soccer associations of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales—which is scheduled to meet in Northern Ireland in March.

Platini said its value would already have been proven last weekend, when forward Adriano appeared to score Inter Milan’s first goal in a 2-1 victory over AC Milan with his arm.

“If we have additional referees, they would have seen the mistake,” Platini said.
