Tottenham say goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini is expected to make a full recovery after surgery on injuries he suffered in an horrific motorbike crash.

The 36-year-old Italian hit a car on Thursday while driving through east London, fracturing his wrist and damaging his pelvis.

The former Chelsea star was operated on at a private hospital on Friday and his north London club believe he is on course for a full recovery from an accident initially described as “life-changing” by ambulance staff.

Tottenham assistant manager Kevin Bond said on Sunday: “It’s going to take some time, he will be on crutches for a period of time and no doubt he’ll be in hospital for a good few days yet,” Bond told Sky Sports News.

“Obviously it’s such good news that all being well he will make a full recovery.

“At this moment no-one is going to put any type of time span on it – we are just glad to know that he’s well.

“That’s the most important thing and hopefully he’ll be back putting his boots on and his gloves on in the not so distant future.”

A female driver and a child passenger escaped unharmed from the car involved in the accident, which was described as a ‘write off’.

Smith warns Rangers not to lose focus in chase for goals

May 16, 2009

GLASGOW (AFP) – Rangers manager Walter Smith has warned his players they must not risk blowing the Scottish Premier League title in a desperate chase for goals.

After Wednesday’s 1-1 draw at Hibernian, Smith’s side are behind leaders Celtic on goal difference with only two matches to play.

Celtic’s goal difference is two better than Rangers, who host Aberdeen on Saturday before their Glasgow rivals face Hibernian on Sunday.

Two big wins could be enough to land Rangers the title even if Celtic also take six points, but Smith knows a gung-ho approach could allow their opponents to score on the break.

“I don’t think we would ever consider the fact that we would get any easy games,” he said. “Aberdeen have been difficult opponents for us over the period of time that I’ve been back.

“That will be a hard enough game for us and we just have to approach it in the manner that we can hopefully take advantage of the fact that we’re at home and go and try to win the game.

“We have to approach the game in the right manner and approach it from the fact that we will hopefully win the match.

“We’ve only lost one league game since the turn of the year so we go into tomorrow’s game with a level of confidence and hopefully if we create as many opportunities as we did against Hibs, we can take them.

“It’s just a matter of making sure we have the right approach and hopefully we win.”

Having played Dundee United on Tuesday, Celtic have two more days to prepare for a massive weekend than Rangers, who host Aberdeen three days after their trip to Edinburgh and Smith admitted his club had questioned the scheduling.

“Our complaint was a fairly simple one,” Smith said. “For anyone who is organising fixtures, if a team is playing on a Tuesday they would play on a Saturday and the team playing on the Wednesday would play on the Sunday.

“That, for me, would be normal. We only asked why that wasn’t the case.

“But we are playing Wednesday and Saturday and we get on with it and we look forward to the game.”

Wolfsburg coach Magath new Schalke boss

May 6, 2009

BERLIN (AFP) – Felix Magath, coach of Bundesliga leaders Wolfsburg, will join rivals Schalke 04 at the end of the season it was confirmed on Wednesday.

Wolfsburg announced Wednesday the 55-year-old will leave them when the season ends on May 23 and hours later Schalke confirmed Magath will take on the dual role of team manager and coach for them next season.

Former Bayern Munich coach Magath has a four-year contract at Schalke and says he leaves Wolfsburg in rude health having used the early exit cause in his contract to take charge at Schalke.

Magath will take over from both Dutch coach Fred Rutten and team manager Andreas Mueller who were sacked from their roles by Schalke earlier this year.

“We have already reached our sporting targets substantially faster than we planned in the summer of 2007 when I took charge,” said Magath in a statement having informed Wolfsburg’s board of his decision on Monday.

“This team is young and is bound to develop more in the future.”

Magath has steered Wolfsburg to the top of the German league this season, while Schalke are up to seventh in the table after an indifferent season, and Hans-Dieter Poetsch, chairman of Wolfsburg’s board, paid tribute to his work.

“We would like to offer our thanks to Mr Magath for his help over the last two years and for his extraordinary achievement in such a short period of time,” he said.

Magath was sacked by Bayern in February 2007 despite leading them to the Bundesliga and German Cup double in both of the two season’s before, but has turned midtable Wolfsburg into table leaders.

Stuttgart suspend Serb Ljuboja

February 5, 2009

STUTTGART, Germany (AFP) – Serbia forward Danijel Ljuboja has been suspended by his Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart until the end of the season on disciplinary grounds, it was announced on Thursday.

"He has not behaved in the way you expect from a professional player," said Stuttgart coach Markus Babbel.

"This is his second infringement in a short period of time."

The Stuttgart coach refused to give any details over what the 30-year-old, who has 19 caps for Serbia and is out of contract in June, had done.

"Danijel had the chance to leave the club during the winter break, but he did not take it, there was always a problem," said Stuttgart’s director of sport Horst Heldt.

Since his arrival in Stuttgart in 2005, Ljuboja has been disciplined on several occasions and after his first season he went into conflict with Stuttgart bosses by asking for his wages to be doubled.

Stuttgart loaned him to Hamburg in 2007, where he fell foul of then-coach Huub Stevens and on his return to Stuttgart, he refused a transfer to Italian side Sienne.

He was loaned again to Wolfsburg in January 2008, but they declined to sign him permanently and returned him to Stuttgart at the end of last season.

Since the start of this season, Ljuboja has made just three Bundesliga appearances.
