Fowler staying after coach dispute resolved – Fury
January 25, 2010

Former England international Robbie Fowler was committed to serving out his contract with North Queensland Fury after resolving his dispute with coach Ian Ferguson, the A-League club said Monday.
The Liverpool great refused to play in the 1-1 home draw against Brisbane Roar on Saturday after being informed by Ferguson that he would be starting on the substitutes’ bench.
Fowler, 34, who is in the middle of a two-year contract, watched from the stands, heightening speculation that he may be finished at the club.
But Fury chairman Don Matheson said both Fowler and Ferguson had agreed to stay committed for the duration of their contracts following talks on Monday.
“I?ve spoken to them today and realise there has been a misunderstanding,” Matheson said in a statement.
“Ian wanted to play a particular formation and that included utilising Robbie as an impact player off the bench and Robbie believed he wasn?t part of the squad.
“There has been an unfortunate outcome because of that misunderstanding.”
Matheson said the issue had been sorted out between the pair and they had given a commitment to try and win Fury’s three remaining matches of the season.
“The club apologises to the fans for what?s happened, but moving forward I am happy that we?ve been able to resolve this in the best interests of the club and the game,” he said.
Matheson said Fowler was frustrated by speculation that he would be quitting.
“Robbie is getting pretty tired of the speculation that he will be leaving North Queensland Fury FC. He is not leaving the club,” said Matheseon.
“He and his family have made some sacrifices for him to play for North Queensland and he?s happy with his decision.”
Fowler told a British newspaper last week that his wife was finding it tough to adjust in Townsville, where Fury are based.
The former Liverpool star is the highest-profile signing in the five years of the A-League.
He is playing club football outside England for the first time since he finished as the fourth-highest all-time scorer with 161 goals in the Premier League.
Fowler’s manager, George Scott, later played down the events of the weekend.
“There was a bit of a misunderstanding and that’s all it was,” Scott said.
“He’s alright, he’s fine there. He’s under contract, so at the moment he’s a Fury player so he’ll

Fowler faces bust-up with coach
January 24, 2010

Former England and Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has caused controversy following a selection fall-out. His future at Australia’s A-League with his North Queensland Fury looks uncertain.
Fowler refused to play in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Brisbane Roar. After coach Ian Ferguson changed his playing formation and moved Fowler to the bench, the 34-year-old sat in the stand in street clothes.
Fury chairman Don Matheson said he would talk to Fowler, the highest-profile signing in the five years of the A-League.
“They were unlucky not to take the game and, although Robbie has been fantastic for the club, we’re not a one-man team,” Matheson said. “He’s here to play football. He didn’t play last night for reasons between him and the coach.
“Obviously I’ve been set up to speak to Robbie to sort out their differences.
“It didn’t pan out the way I would like so I will probably intervene on that tomorrow and we’ll move forward from there.”
Fowler joined the Fury last year after finishing as the fourth highest scorer in Premier League with 161 goals.

Fowler´s A-League future ´in doubt after dispute´
January 23, 2010

Liverpool great Robbie Fowler’s playing future in Australia’s A-League is in doubt after a selection dispute at his North Queensland Fury club, reports said on Saturday.
The former England international striker refused to play in a changed playing formation for the Fury’s home match against Brisbane Roar in Townsville, according to Fox Sports.
Fowler, 34, was subsequently not named in the Fury’s squad for the match and his position with the club appears uncertain.
The former Liverpool star is the highest-profile signing in the five years of the A-League and is playing club football outside England for the first time since he finished as the fourth-highest all-time scorer with 161 goals in the Premier League.
There have been reports that Fowler has been prepared to walk out on the club with a year of his contract still remaining because his wife has failed to settle in North Queensland.
Fowler told a British newspaper this week that his wife was finding it tough to adjust.
“The kids are very adaptable to where they are, but I think my wife still needs a bit of convincing,” he said.
“It’s not like back at home where there’s more stuff to do and more families that we know, so she’s still adjusting.”

Is Bullard’s celebration the best?
December 1, 2009
Jimmy Bullard’s re-enactment of Hull City manager Phil Brown lecturing his players on the field has been widely praised — even by Brown himself.
Bullard sat his team mates down and wagged his finger after scoring the equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Manchester City, where Brown had dished out his unsual telling off at halftime in a 5-1 defeat last term.
Is Bullard’s the best goal celebration you’ve seen? If not what was better? Marco Tardelli? Robbie Fowler? Bebeto?

Fowler scores on losing A-League debut
August 8, 2009

Liverpool great Robbie Fowler scored on his Australian A-League debut but it wasn’t enough to prevent North Queensland Fury from losing their opening home game of the season on Saturday.
The former England international striker equalised with his 60th-minute penalty but Fury went down 3-2 to Sydney FC, with former Australian international forward John Aloisi scoring a brace for the winners.
Fury trailed 2-0 after 28 minutes but fought back to level after Fowler sent Sydney goalkeeper Clint Bolton the wrong way to score the first goal of his A-League stint before Aloisi clinched the win with a 73rd-minute penalty.
Fowler, 34, is the highest-profile signing in the five years of the A-League and is playing club football outside England for the first time since he finished as the fourth-highest all-time scorer with 161 goals in the English Premier League.
“We put ourselves on the back foot, but all credit to the lads to get it back to 2-2,” Fowler said.
“It was not the ideal result but I think we’ll take some credit to get back from two goals down — it shows a bit of fight in the team.”
Fowler has been handed the captaincy of the Townsville-based Fury, who have entered the expanded 10-team A-League competition this year along with Gold Coast United.
Gold Coast won their first-ever match 3-1 over Brisbane Roar on Saturday with New Zealander Shane Smeltz, Socceroo Jason Culina and Brazilian Robson all getting on the score sheet.

Injured Iwelumo to miss Wolves´ EPL start
July 11, 2009

Chris Iwelumo will miss next month’s start of the English Premier League season because of a foot injury picked up in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 1-0 pre-season win over Perth Glory.
The 30-year-old Scottish international forward was helped from the field in Friday’s match after a 50-50 challenge and was later found to have broken a metatarsal in his right foot, club officials said.
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy said there was no malice in the strong tackle from Glory’s new Socceroo signing Jacob Burns that forced Iwelumo .
“The game was fine, no badness in it at all,” McCarthy told reporters after the match. “It was just an accident. Nothing we could have avoided.
“It wasn’t too physical, it was purely an accident. I think they just clashed.
“But it’s disappointing. Chris has worked his socks off to have the career he has.
“We just got to the Premiership and he breaks his metatarsal… it’s hugely disappointing for him and for me.”
Wolves controlled possession for large periods but failed to put the Glory away, with goalkeeper Tando Velaphi pulling off two crucial saves.
“We were hopeless,” McCarthy said. “I hate pre-season, it’s a means to an end.”

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake’s strike in the second minute proved the winner for Wolves, who will play Robbie Fowler’s new Australian club, North Queensland Fury, in a double-header here on Wednesday.

Fowler raring to go for new A-League club
July 10, 2009

SYDNEY (AFP) – Former Liverpool star Robbie Fowler says he is keenly counting down to next month’s kick-off for the Australian A-League season with his new club North Queensland Fury.
The 33-year-old former England striker, whose goal-scoring exploits once saw him idolised on the red half of Merseyside, will be the Fury’s marquee player as the club makes its debut in the A-League this season.
Fowler dismissed suggestions earlier this week that he was seeking a move back to England and said he was eagerly anticipating his first appearance for the Fury against Sydney FC on August 8.
“The season’s coming up and everyone’s starting to get the butterflies in the stomach and it’s an exciting time,” Fowler said on Friday.
Fowler said he hadn’t experienced too many problems with northern Queensland’s tropical climate and didn’t think the heat would be a factor for him in the coming Australian season.
“I think people are probably make more of it (the climate) than what it is to be fair,” he said.
“As a player you play in hot countries and hot climates anyway so you tend to get used to them.”
Fowler said the arrival of his family in Townsville would help him settle further, though he had enjoyed his time in Australia so far.
“I was quite settled anyway. The fact is I was over here for two months without them,” he said.
“Obviously I missed them immensely and the fact they are over here now helps a little bit more but I was settled anyway and the fact is they’re here which will calm me down a little bit more.”
Fowler scored 120 goals in 236 league appearances for Liverpool and also played for Leeds United, Manchester City, Cardiff City and Blackburn Rovers, where he was released late last year after a short stint.

Doyle to start for Wolves in Aussie friendly
July 9, 2009

PERTH, Australia (AFP) – Wolverhampton Wanderers’ club record signing Kevin Doyle will play in an Australian pre-season friendly against Perth Glory, manager Mick McCarthy said Thursday.
Wolves, newly-promoted to the English Premier League, signed striker Doyle in a 6.5 million pounds (10.47 million US) deal from Reading late last month.
McCarthy said Doyle, a Republic of Ireland international, will lead the attack against Glory on Friday and will prove to be a vital asset for Wolves this season.
“I’m delighted with Doyle, it’s a real coup for the club,” he said. “There were a number of clubs interested and it was brilliant we managed to persuade him to come to Wolves. When we signed Doyle it got a great response.
“It looks like we’ve got a much better squad (with him in there).”
Doyle said he was confident Wolves would survive in the Premiership.
“I’m happy with my decision (to sign with Wolves),” Doyle said.
“Time will tell but I’m pretty confident we’ll do well, I wouldn’t have signed otherwise.
“I had a chance to go to a team who’s (playing) in Europe this year and I came to Wolves instead, so I think that shows my confidence.”
McCarthy, who led Wolves back to the top flight after a five-year absence, said he expected a rusty performance from his squad, who only started pre-season training last week.
“It’s the first pre-season game, it’s the first game after being off for two months,” McCarthy said. “Two months off, it takes you a while to get back into it.
“It is about us getting fit though. It’s not about us having a great result against Perth Glory, and having a great result throughout all pre-season … and then getting slapped on the first day of the new season against West Ham.
“This is preparation for our Premiership season.”
Wolves are in Western Australia for an 11-day training camp and will play former England striker Robbie Fowler’s new Australian club, North Queensland Fury, on a double-header bill here next Wednesday.
Glory coach David Mitchell said he intended to unveil his new signings, Socceroos Mile Sterjovski and Jacob Burns and former Derby County defender Andy Todd against Wolves.

Fowler dismisses talk of return to England
July 8, 2009

MELBOURNE (AFP) – Former Liverpool and England striker Robbie Fowler on Wednesday dismissed reports he would leave Australia to play for ex-teammate John Barnes at English League One side Tranmere Rovers.
The 34-year-old signed a two-year contract with A-League debutants North Queensland Fury in February and said he had no intention of walking away from the deal.
“It looks like somebody’s put two and two together and come up with six,” Fowler said.
“I’ve got a two-year contract with North Queensland Fury and I’m a man of my word — I’ll play it out.”
Fowler, whose goal-scoring exploits once saw him idolised in the red half of Merseyside, said his family had recently arrived in Australia ahead of his A-League debut later this month.
“They wouldn’t have travelled all this way if I had any intention to leave,” he said.
Fury coach Ian Ferguson said he had not been contacted by Barnes and was confident his marquee signing was staying.
“When you’ve got a world-class player in your team there’s always going to be speculation about him going to other clubs,” he said.
Fowler scored 120 goals in 236 league appearances for Liverpool and also played for Leeds United, Manchester City, Cardiff City and Blackburn Rovers.

Fowler is happy down under
July 8, 2009

Australian A-League side North Queensland Fury’s striker Robbie Fowler has denied reports that he is set to reunite with former Liverpool team-mate John Barnes at Tranmere, insisting his future remains in Australia.
The former Liverpool marksman, who signed a two-year contract with the new A-League franchise in February, but hasn’t made his debut or even taken part in full training session due to a string of groin and hip injuries.
With lack of match practice after his three-month contract with Blackburn expired in December, the 34-year-old has been linked with a move to Prenton Park where former Celtic and Jamaica manager Barnes, is now at the helm after taking over from Ronnie Moore last month.
Jason McAteer, a former Liverpool team-mate of Barnes and Fowler, who is also employed as Barnes’ assistant at Tranmere, just missed out on the League One play-offs last season on the final day.
The report suggested Fowler’s family has also failed to settle in Australia and that, coupled with his succession injuries, would force his return to England.
However, the former England and Manchester City striker has insisted that he is staying put ahead of North Queensland’s season opener against Sydney FC on August 8, with featuring of the player still in doubt after his latest injury setback Fowler.
“I don’t know where it’s come from,” said Fowler. “It looks like somebody’s put two and two together and come up with six.
“I’ve got a two-year contract with North Queensland Fury FC and I’m a man of my word – I’ll play it out.
“I wouldn’t want anyone to do that sort of thing to me and I certainly wouldn’t do it anyone.
“There’s nothing to this – my family has just arrived and they wouldn’t have travelled all this way if I had any intention to leave.”
Even Fury coach Ian Ferguson has also spoken to Fowler at length regarding the report.
“Robbie’s happy here and he want to play football for the Fury,” Ferguson said.
“There’s no doubt he’s the sort of player other clubs would be interested in, but John Barnes would have had to come through the Fury if he was interested in Robbie and that hasn’t happened.”
“Robbie is under contract to us for two years and it would be a breach of FIFA regulations for another club approached him.”
“There’s no one quoted in the story and it just isn’t right.”
“When you’ve got a world class player in your team there’s always going to be speculation about him going to other clubs.”
