Instead, the only goal of the match was in Maritimo’s favor and was in fact an own goal from Rolando in the 30th minute.

Standard drop points in Belgian league
October 31, 2009
Defending champions Standard Liege dropped another two points in the Belgian League, being held to a goalless draw at Excelsior Mouscron on Friday.
Pressure was on Standard to win the game at Excelsior, who are in penultimate position with only two victories from 11 games this season.
But Standard never managed to control the game at Mouscron’s Stade Le Cannonier, as the two sides were equal throughout the game.
Standard did get an opportunity to decide the match late on, but Milan Jovanovic somehow missed the chance from close range.
However, the draw may not have much of a negative effect on Standard, as Excelsior risk removal from the top flight due to financial troubles. All their previous results would be rescinded in that case.
Standard remain in third place, behind Club Brugge and Anderlecht, and could drop another spot on the weekend. Mouscron are still in 16th position.

AZ Alkmaar escape in Dutch Cup
October 29, 2009

AZ Alkmaar needed extra time to take distance from amateur side Spakenburg in the Dutch Cup, while PSV Eindhoven advanced after an away win at Roda JC.
Defending league champions AZ had an extremely difficult time in their home match with Spakenburg, who took an early lead through Thijs Houwing.
It took until the 51st minute for substitute Pontus Wernbloom to equalize, after which Stijn Schaars made it 2-1 in minute 76. Against all expectations however, Christy Bonevacio leveled late on to force extra time.
But in extra time, AZ clearly had more energy than their opponents. Wernbloom, Nick van der Velden and Mounir El Hamdaoui scored for a 5-2 win.
PSV Eindhoven never impressed in the match at Roda JC, but walked away with a 0-2 win. Stanislav Manolev netted the opening goal in the 32nd minute, and Jonathan Reis added a second in the 78th.
FC Twente left it until late to increase the gap with amateur team Capelle. A goal from Luuk de Jong gave Steve McClaren’s men a lead in the 28th minute, but it took until the 88th minute for De Jong to add a second. Nikita Rukavytsya went on to make it 3-0 in added time.
The draw for the round of sixteen will be performed on Thursday, following the match between Dordrecht and Ajax.

Argentinian classic ends undecided
October 26, 2009

The Argentinian classic between River Plate and Boca Juniors ended in a 1-1 draw, a result that helps neither side at this point.
At only a few spots from the relegation zone, most of the pressure was on River to deliver a good performance in this match. Boca on the other hand, needed a win to limit the gap with the top of the Argentinian Primera Division.
River Plate were first to find the net at their own Estadio Monumental, with Marcelo Gallardo beating Boca keeper Abbondanzieri after 39 minutes.
Both teams had a player sent off in the first minutes of the second half. River’s Cristian Villagra conceded a second yellow card in minute 46, and Julio Caceres of Boca followed with a direct red card four minutes later.
Three minutes after the hour mark, it was former Villarreal player Martin Palermo to level the score for Boca.
The draw leaves Boca in tenth place at five points from joint leaders Estudiantes, Banfield and Newell’s Old Boys, while River Plate are in 16th place with just seven points from ten games.
