Interim tag removed from Latapy’s title
March 3, 2010
Former Trinidad international Russell Latapy has had the interim tag removed from his title as manager of the Soca Warriors, agreeing to a two-year contract to coach the side.
Latapy, who replaced Francisco Maturana on a temporary basis in April after three of 10 matches in the final round of World Cup qualifying, was one of several announcements made by the Trinidad federation, including technical director Lincoln Phillips taking over as goalkeeping coach of all TTFF teams, particularly the senior and under-23 teams.
Other announcements included the retention of David Muhammad as senior team manager, and Zoran Vranes and Cheryl Abrams remaining in their posts as head coach and manager of the under-23 and under-21 teams.
“It is indeed a pleasure to stand before you today as the newly reappointed coach of our national football team,” Latapy said. “This is a task that I again accept with a great sense of pride, honor, gratitude and humility. ”
Trinidad won only one of seven World Cup qualifying matches under Latapy, a 1-0 victory over El Salvador on August 12, and finished last in the six-team “hexagonal”. It’s only other victory was a 3-2 friendly victory over St. Kitts and Nevis on July 12.
The Soca Warriors became the smallest nation ever to qualify for a World Cup when it accomplished the feat in 2006, but failed to qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2009.
Latapy played 22 years as midfielder before retiring as a player last year, including stints with clubs in his native Trinidad, Portugal and Scotland. He is one of three players to participate in six World Cup qualifying efforts along with compatriot Dwight Yorke and Northern Ireland goalkeeper.
He was an assistant coach at Falkirk, where he played for six years, as well as under Maturana before taking over as interim manager.

US and T&T move in opposite directions
September 9, 2009

Two teams going opposite directions will meet in a World Cup qualifier in Port of Spain Wednesday night.
On one side, the United States comes to Trinidad & Tobago off a come-from-behind victory against El Salvador in Sandy, Utah, Saturday night, a win that puts the Americans level on points with Honduras atop the final hexagonal group. Los Catrachos, though, have the edge on goal differential.
Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore struck late in the first half for the United States after Christian Castillo put El Salvador in front on 32 minutes, capitalizing on a defensive miscue at Rio Tinto Stadium.
While the United States is all but a lock to advance to a sixth straight World Cup, the Soca Warriors dreams of returning to the tournament are all but dashed after a 4-1 loss to Honduras on Saturday night in San Pedro Sula.
Kerry Baptiste scored the lone goal for T&T, which is tied with El Salvador with five points from seven matches, alone in last on goal differential.
While their spirits are low, Trinidad coach Russell Latapy said his team’s goals have not changed.
“We know that we’re in a very difficult situation right now, but again, we have to represent our country with pride and desire,” Latapy told the media following Monday night’s training session at Hasely Crawford Stadium. “In saying that, we want to win the last few games that we have.”
A loss to the United States would mathematically eliminate the Soca Warriors.
“We’re in a situation (where) in order to qualify we have to win our three games and we have to depend on other results from the other teams, so it makes it very difficult,” Latapy said. “Again, we’re playing at home and we’re going to play to win and we’re going to look at the other results and play all the games to win and see where that leads us.”
United States goalkeeper Tim Howard isn’t sure what to expect from the Soca Warriors or the home fans Wednesday night.
“I don’t think anybody gives up, but obviously it’s deflating for them,” he said. “It’s still a home game and you wonder how their crowd will react to them. Will they get on their backs or will they give them a lift? It’s tough to say. I think the best thing for us is to go down there with the right focus and the right mindset.”
Indeed, the sole focus for the Americans is on securing three points and moving atop the group.
“They’re playing at home so they’ll have some pride,” Altidore said. “It’s hard to know what to expect, but we can’t really worry about that. We have to go and try to win the game.”

El Salvador faces long odds against US in WC qualifiers
September 5, 2009

Arturo Alvarez grew up in the United States but the first team he envisioned himself playing for was his father’s native El Salvador.
Alvarez, who plays professionally for the MLS San Jose Earthquakes, recently switched his soccer nationality from the US to El Salvador making his debut with the Los Cuscatlecos in their last game against Trinidad and Tobago.
“My dad’s been a fan his whole life,” Alvarez said. “When the Salvadoran national team played you couldn’t get them on TV. He would take me to a bar so we could watch on pay-per-view.
“I truly believe this is the way things were meant to turn out.”
Alvarez is one of three MLS players who will play for El Salvador in a World Cup qualifier Saturday against the Americans at Rio Tinto Stadium.
He grew up in Houston and played for the US Youth National Team before applying to FIFA to change associations.
The odds are long, some say impossible, but a loss to the US would not automatically eliminate El Salvador from World Cup contention.
The top three teams from the group automatically qualify for the 2010 World Cup while the fourth place team faces the fifth place finisher from South America in a playoff.
El Salvador (five points) currently sits in fifth place, four points behind Mexico. The US is in fourth with 10 points.
El Salvador has lost three of their last six games but on a positive note sniper Rudi Corrales leads all scorers in the region with seven goals in World Cup qualifying.
American Landon Donovan has recovered from the swine flu and can make US history on Saturday. Donovan is poised to vault past Claudio Reyna, Kasey Keller and Eddie Pope, into first place with 32 career appearances in World Cup qualifying.
The last time the two teams met they battled to a 2-2 draw in March in San Salvador.
The Americans recently had their 58-game home soil undefeated streak snapped in a heartbreaking loss to Mexico on August 12. They will be seeking to start another streak against El Salvador.
In other qualifying matches on Saturday, Trinidad and Tobago takes on Honduras and first place Costa Rica battles Mexico.
Like El Salvador, Trinidad and Tobago has a steep hill to climb on Saturday.
The last time the teams met, they played to a 1-1 draw in Port of Spain.
“I expect it to be a difficult game, but no game is an easy one,” Trinidad coach Russell Latapy said. “Honduras has some good players and they are coming off a good result. We have some work to do.”

Honduras and T&T confident ahead of WCQ
September 4, 2009

The climb is still steep, the odds long, but Trinidad & Tobago is confident ahead of Saturday night’s World Cup qualifier against Honduras in San Pedro Sula following a critical 1-0 victory against El Salvador on Aug. 12.
The Soca Warriors are tied with El Salvador at the bottom of the final hexagonal stage, but are just four points behind fourth-place Mexico.
The top three teams from the group automatically qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, while the fourth place team faces the fifth place finisher from South American in a playoff.
“I expect it to be a difficult game, but no game is an easy one,” Trinidad coach Russell Latapy told reporters at Ramón Villeda Morales Airport in San Pedro Sula. “Honduras has some good players and they are coming off a good result as well. We have some work to do because there is a game to be played on Saturday.”
The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in Port of Spain in March, with Khaleem Hyland striking for the equalizer two minutes from full time after Carlos Pavon put the visitors in front on 50 minutes.
Bolton Wanderers defender Jlloyd Samuel is one of 10 overseas players in contention for the Soca Warriors, including Fulham striker Bobby Zaomora, who will undergo a fitness test.
“It’s obviously going to be a difficult game, but I expect it will be the same for the two teams,” Trinidad & Tobago veteran Dwight Yorke said. “We haven’t lost to them in this campaign and they haven’t had much success at home in World Cup football. But I think it’s going to be a very exciting game and a tough one for either team.”
Honduras is buoyed by the return of Inter Milan’s David Suazo, who has been sidelined since the spring after suffering a knee injury playing for Portugal’s Benfica.
“I am very pleased with the confidence that [Honduran coach Reinaldo Rueda] has given me,” Suazo told reporters. “I tell you I have been good and committed. I come in good condition and I hope that the professor can count on me.”
Los Catrachos celebrated a historic and stunning 4-0 victory against group-leading Costa Rica at Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano on Aug. 12 and move into a tie for second place with the United States in the standings, two points behind the Ticos.
“The patience in us will be important and we should handle this game as we did against Costa Rica,” Honduran captain Amado Guevara said. “The goal is near and we must continue to strive to achieve the goal.”

Borges scores twice to give Costa Rica 3-2 victory over Trinidad, move Ticos closer to World Cup
June 7, 2009

BACOLET, Tobago – Celso Borges scored two second-half goals and lifted Costa Rica to a 3-2 victory over Trinidad & Tobago on Saturday, giving the Ticos command of the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.
Borges, who scored in the 13th minute Wednesday night in San Jose in a 3-1 victory over the United States, scored in the 52nd and 69th minutes, to give Costa Rica 12 points atop the standings as the final round of qualifying reached its midpoint.
Three of the six teams will qualify automatically for the 32-team field in South Africa with the fourth-place finisher entering a playoff with the fifth-place finisher from South America for the last berth.
Borges’ first goal gave Costa Rica a 2-1 lead before second-half substitute Collin Samuel equalized in the 63rd. Borges then restored the advantage, finishing unmarked from the middle of the penalty after Pablo Herrera drove a cross from the right side through the box.
Trinidad, playing its first game under player-coach Russell Latapy who replaced Francisco Maturana in April, remained with two points after four games and precariously in last place.
Trinidad started quickly, dominating the first 15 minutes before a home crowd in Dwight Yorke Stadium and taking the lead in the 30th minute when Gonzalo Segares gave away a free kick 35 yards from goals and Carlos Edwards drove a right-footed ball past an apparently misplaced wall. The shot was well left of the wall, skipped twice and entered just inside the left post past slowly reacting Costa Rica keeper Keylor Navas.
Costa Rica reacted by testing Clayton Ince two minutes later, forcing the Trinidad keeper to tip Alvaro Saborio’s header over the bar.
But Saborio converted in the 41st, appearing to mis-hit a cross by Esteban Sirias by missing with his right leg but deflecting it inadvertently with his right thigh, dribbling it between Ince and the far post.
Borges capitalized on a Trinidad mistake to put Costa Rica ahead in the 52nd, reacting to Dennis Lawrence’s attempted headed clearance. Lawrence cleared the ball up the middle, where Borges ran on and drove a ball from inside the area.
Samuel, who replaced Hayden Tinto to start the second half, restored the life to the crowd in the 63rd. Kenwyne Jones had the ball at the top of the area before Segares forced the ball wide, where Samuel ran on and drove a ball that Navas was able to partially block, but not stop from bouncing into the goal.
Costa Rica next will enter the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July before returning to World Cup qualifying in August. Trinidad must travel to Mexico on Wednesday to face an opponent it has only beaten three times in 15 matches.

Costa Ricans spoil Latapy´s debut with 3-2 victory
June 7, 2009

BACOLET, Trinidad and Tobago (AFP) – Celso Borges scored two second-half goals to give Costa Rica a 3-2 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in a North American World Cup 2010 qualifying match.
The victory ensured Costa Rica’s place atop the regional table midway through the six-team round-robin qualifying tournament that will determine three qualifiers for next year’s global football showdown in South Africa.
Costa Rica, now 4-1 for 12 points, spoiled the debut of Russell Latapy as coach of the Soca Warriors, who fell to 0-2-2 to remain last on the table.
Carlos Edwards gave the hosts a lead in the 29th minute but Alvaro Saborio’s strike in the 40th minute pulled Costa Rica level 1-1 at half-time.
Borges, who plays for Norway’s Fredrikstad, struck in the 52nd minute but Collin Samuels answered 10 minutes later for Trinidad and Tobago.
Borges shut down notions of an upset with his goal in the 68th minute and from there the Costa Ricans clamp down to deny the Warriors another goal.

Costa Rica tavels to Trinidad riding momentum of victory over United States
June 5, 2009

Fresh off a thorough 3-1 win against the United States that sent Costa Rica to the top of the table in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, the Ticos travel to Trinidad & Tobago to play a squad that has never beat them in 12 previous qualifiers dating back to 1966.
On Wednesday night in front of a raucous crowd, Costa Rica dominated the Americans, scoring twice in the first 13 minutes and delighting the fans at Estadio Saprissa in San Jose.
The Ticos improved to 3-0 at the Monster’s Cave in the final round of qualifying, their lone defeat coming to Mexico in its only road match at Estadio Azteca on March 28.
While Costa Rica has momentum and history on its side, Trinidad, which is desperate for a result, will have the crowd support at Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago. The Soca Warriors are tied with El Salvador in last place of the six-team group with two points from three matches, drawing Honduras and El Salvador.
Saturday’s match will mark the managerial debut of Russell Latapy, who replaced Francisco “Paco” Maturana. The Colombian resigned April 8 and the 41-year-old Trinidad legend, who scored a critical goal against the USA to advance the Soca Warriors to the final round of qualifying, took over on an interim basis.
“I’m pretty satisfied with the way things are going at the moment,” Latapy told FIFA.com. “I’ve had a good bit of time to work with the local players, and I have to applaud the coaches from the pro league here, who have allowed me access to their players for two full weeks of camp. So, as far as I’m concerned, things are going well and I couldn’t be more pleased.”
As if the task of securing points against Costa Rica isn’t daunting enough, it became even more difficult when Stern John injured his back, putting added pressure on other players. But English-born midfielder Chris Birchall told Trinidad & Tobago reporters that he’s ready to assume the responsibility.
“I know the last time was the goal against Bahrain (in the playoff for the 2006 World Cup), and then I scored in a friendly after the World Cup against St. Vincent, but it’s felt like such a long time since I’ve scored for Trinidad and I think I owe the team a goal or two now,” Birchall said. “It would be great to get on the score sheet on Saturday and help the team to a victory.”

Latapy replaces Maturana as manager of Trinidad & Tobago
April 9, 2009
PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad – Forty-year-old midfielder Russell Latapy assumed the job as interim manager of Trinidad & Tobago’s national team on Wednesday, replacing Francisco Maturana who resigned from the position, the Trinidad federation said.
Latapy, who has more than 70 caps for the Soca Warriors, will work as a player-coach and be assisted by Zoran Vranes, who qualified the country’s junior team in March for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup later this year in Egypt.
Maturana resigned “due to differences in opinions regarding the way forward in the FIFA 2010 World Cup qualification campaign for South Africa,” the Trinidad federation said in a statement on its Web site.
The change comes a week after Trinidad was beaten 3-0 by the United States in Nashville, Tennessee, leaving the Soca Warriors with two points after three of 10 games in the final round of World Cup qualifying, last in the six-team “hexagonal”.
Latapy, who has played professionally in Scotland since 1998, has participated in Trinidad’s last six World Cup qualifying campaigns, scoring nine goals in 40 games. He also played in the 2006 World Cup finals, when Trinidad became the smallest nation to qualify for the quadrennial championship.
“I’m absolutely delighted with being given opportunity to be coach of my country’s national team,” Latapy said in a statement on the Trinidad Web site. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and the people who’ve been involved with me in football and from a family standpoint over the years all know this.
“The task ahead of us is by no means an easy one but I think once we can get everything together, and with the support of the nation, we can achieve our goal which right now is qualifying for the next World Cup and continuing to take the country’s football forward.”
Trinidad, which failed to qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July, will play its next World Cup qualifier on June 6 at home against Costa Rica, followed four days later with a match at Mexico.

Absences of Yorke, Suazo create voids for Trinidad & Tobago, Honduras
March 26, 2009
This is not the time in World Cup qualifying to be without your scoring inspirations.
Trinidad and Tobago will be without Dwight Yorke while David Suazo will be missing from the Honduras starting 11 in as for both teams face off in the second match of the final round of qualifying Saturday in Port-of-Spain.
Yorke’s profanity laced tirade against match officials in Trinidad’s opening 2-2 draw at El Salvador on February 11 earned him a four-game suspension and dealt a significant blow to the Soca Warriors.
Trinidad’s Colombian manager Francisco Maturna will be forced to look to 40-year-old player-coach Russell Latapy and Yorke’s Sunderland teammates Carlos Edwards to compensate, not only on Saturday but on April 1 in Nashville, Tennessee, against the United States. “The Honduras fixture is very important for us as a team, and Dwight missing the game is a big blow – but a four-match ban is massive for us,” said Edwards, who scored in their opening game in San Salvador.
“I think we all believe we have what it takes, and even if he’s not there on the pitch with us, we must step up and bring home the results that will get us there.”
Latapy played 67 minutes in a 1-0 friendly win over Panama on March 19 and “The Little Magician” said he is confident he can make an important contribution in the absence of Yorke.
Scottish based defender Marvin Andrews also will be unavailable for both matches due to personal problems, and an accumulation of yellow cards means that goalkeeper Clayton Ince and midfielder Christopher Birchall also are suspended for Saturday‘s game.
Trinidad will have the option of Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones as a targetman along with Stern John (Bristol City) and Jason Scotland (Swansea City) in attack.
Honduras manager Reynaldo Rueda, also a Colombian, has a gigantic hole with Suazo out for four months after injuring his knee in the final minutes of Benfica’s Portuguese League Cup victory over Sporting Lisbon.
Without Suazo, Rueda and his squad who will face a very physically punishing Trinidad squad on its home turf.
“We will be facing a very strong side in Trinidad and Tobago with world class athletes, it is a solid team with a great formation and tactician in Francisco Maturana,” Rueda said. “They are a very different team than we are used to facing and we have been studying their match tapes very closely.”
A renewed emphasis has been placed on the finishing touch of in-form Italian Serie B striker Julio “Rambo” Cesar of Parma, who returns to the national program after club commitments kept him away for several months.
Honduras midfielder and captain Amado Guevara may have misfired on several scoring opportunities in a frustrating 2-0 opening loss to Costa Rica on February 11, but appears to have found his scoring touch after a two-goal performance in Saturday’s 3-2 Major League Soccer victory for Toronto FC against Kansas City.
Other important ingredients in the Honduras attack for Rueda will be Necaxa striker Carlos Pavon, Birmingham City target man Carlos Costly and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Wilson Palacios.
Honduras warmed up for Saturday’s match with 2-0 win against the Montreal Impact of the United Soccer Leagues on Sunday in Miami.

World Cup Profile: Trinidad & Tobago looks to return to form when qualifying resumes
January 27, 2009
It’s a new year with new hope. Trinidad & Tobago and coach Francisco Maturana is hoping to dismiss December’s disappointing Caribbean Championship as an anomaly, and recover the its form when it resumes World Cup qualifying next month.
A two-week training camp in Argentina could provide the inspiration the Soca Warriors need.
Maturana, who guided Colombian to the 1990 World Cup, saw Trinidad earn just four points from three matches at the Caribbean cup, denying the side from a trip to the CONCACAF Gold Cup for only the third time.
Maturana will have a chance to tinker with his roster in matches against first-division clubs Independiente, Valez Sarsfield, Gimnasia y Esgrima de la Plata and second-division outfit Quilmes as the team prepares to open the final round of World Cup qualifying at El Salvador on February 11. Of some consolation to Maturana was that he was without most of his European-based players, unavailable with the Caribbean cup played outside the international fixtures window.
Maturana has assured fans that the recent appointment of midfielder Russell Latapy as a playing assistant coach won’t be a distraction, and will further T&T’s chances of a second consecutive appearance in the World Cup.
“He understands me as a coach as well and we have our roles to play,” Maturana said. “We also discussed his role and importance as a player and he will be very important in relaying instructions out in the middle [of the field].”
The return of Sunderland striker Dwight Yorke gave the squad a boost during the semifinal round of qualifying, which included a 2-1 win over the United States where the former Manchester United forward scored the winner.
Not to be forgotten is out-of-contract Keon Daniel, who led the Soca Warriors in scoring during the semifinal round with four goals in six matches.
Meanwhile, San Jose Earthquakes striker Scott Sealy, Bristol City’s Stern John, Swansea City’s Jason Scotland and newcomer Errol McFarlane, who plays with Lebanon’s Al-Mabarrah, will provide Maturana plenty of other attacking options as he looks for a solution to the team’s recent drop in form.
Veteran goalkeeper Clayton Ince of English club Walsall appears to have settled back into the starter’s role and, with 72 caps, should be the No. 1 choice after a freak injury to backup keeper Marvin Phillip.
Phillip, who split net the duties with Ince in the semifinal round, was injured in a bizarre December 20 knife attack while coming to the defense of a friend in the street, and his fitness level has become a big question as he recovers. Defender Dennis Lawrence anchors the T&T defense. Osei Telesford of the Puerto Rico Islanders and Miami FC’s Avery John, both of whom play in the United Soccer Leagues – the U.S. second division, also will provide Ince with valuable cover.
