Ghana target Nigeria in west African derby

January 28, 2010

Ghana face neighbours Nigeria in a charged west African derby here Thursday with the prize a ticket to the Africa Cup of Nations final.

The semi-finalists who face off at Luanda’s 11 November stadium made it through in wildly contrasting fashions.

While four-time winners Ghana impressed in their 1-0 quarter-final win over hosts Angola, Nigeria laboured to a goalless extra-time draw with Zambia, only prevailing on penalties, with Israeli-based goalkeeper Victor Enyeama converting the decisive spot kick for a 5-4 win.

Despite their far from impressive performance Ghana coach Milovan Rajevic is too wily a coach to take Nigeria’s form in Benguela at face value.

“If you just look at Nigeria’s quarter-final performance it can create a false impression,” warned the Serb, speaking as ever with the help of his trusty translator.

“Yesterday (Tuesday) they showed they were an experienced team who knew what they wanted.

“You can’t draw any conclusions from that game, you have to look at the bigger picture.

“Take for example Ivory Coast. They didn’t play very well against Burkina Faso, then showed they could play a lot better in their next matches.”

Rajevic has worked wonders to get Ghana this far given the injury crisis he has had to contend with, Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien among a host of key players out injured.

Yet he said he wasn’t surprised at Ghana’s progress to the semi-finals.

“When you consider we have eight younger players from Ghana’s Under-20 World Cup winning team combined with some experienced players it’s an excellent mix.

“My team has proved its quality, they know how to compete, they are tough, and there is an excellent atmosphere and spirit in the squad.”

Rajevic is due to welcome back Norwegian-based midfielder Anthony Annan, who has missed all of Ghana’s matches in Angola up to now.

“Anthony is recovering well and we can use him for the semi-final,” Rajevac confirmed.

However, he will be without Agyemang Opuku, who is suspended.

Rajevic, meanwhile, may be a ‘blow in’ from Serbia but he doesn’t need reminding of the importance Ghanaians attach to beating Nigeria.

“There is a definite rivalry between the two countries. On top of that this is a semi-final in the Africa Cup of Nations, with a place in the final up for grabs.”

Recent history is on Ghana’s side, after they knocked out Nigeria in the quarter-finals at the 2008 competition on home soil.

Asamoah Gyan scored the decisive goal in Ghana’s quarter-final win over the hosts in Luanda on Sunday and the Rennes striker is relishing facing Nigeria again.

Gyan said: “Every Ghanaian knows how important it is to play Nigeria. We are ready for them and prepared and we will stick to the game plan that the coach has mapped out for us.

“We beat Nigeria two years ago. We have a lot of young guys in the team but we are concentrated and we will do everything possible to win.”

Ghana are four time winners of the competition but their last title dates back to 1982.

Nigeria, meanwhile, champions in 1980 and 1994, have yet to catch fire in Angola, and will have to put in a more convincing display than they did against Zambia to see off Ghana.

Nigeria’s under-fire coach Shaibu Amodu said after edging Zambia: “I was worried for the reputation of Nigeria, not for my job. It wouldn’t have been good to once again be knocked out in the quarter-finals.

“We’ve said from day one that we have a team that can win this tournament. I know that I have the players to win it.

“We didn’t play very well against Zambia but we showed how to play as a team.

“We’re not at our best at the moment but we are improving all the time, and in five months (at the World Cup) we’ll be a lot better.”

Sky brightens for Argentina after kind draw

December 5, 2009

After a qualifying campaign plagued by acrimony and embarrassment, Argentina can look to the 2010 World Cup with hope after being drawn in a group with South Korea, Nigeria and Greece on Friday.

The events of a turbulent 18 months have given Argentine fans little to cheer, but in newly crowned European Footballer of the Year Lionel Messi they boast the world’s best player, while their squad is thick with guile and top-level experience.

Diego Maradona was the only national coach absent from Friday’s draw in Cape Town due to the FIFA ban imposed upon him because of his abusive rant at the media in the wake of the 1-0 win over Uruguay that secured qualification.

One of the world’s all-time greats as a player, Maradona led his country to the 1986 World Cup title and then the final in Italy four years later, but as a coach he has cut an erratic and controversial figure.

“I tell my players that 30 days of sacrifice for the chance to kiss the World Cup is nothing in the life of a man,” he said.

“An achievement like that is like touching the sky. I played in World Cups and I reached two finals. I know what it takes.”

Argentina qualified despite a humiliating 6-1 loss at altitude in Bolivia and a first ever home qualifying defeat to Brazil, but underwhelming recent form is something of a feature in Group B.

South Korea, semi-finalists on home soil in 2002, overcame a sluggish start under new coach Huh Jung-Moo but eventually qualified with two games to spare to reach their eighth finals – an Asian record.

“We were drawn in the so-called Group of Death in Asian qualifying and we made it through,” said Huh.

“We believe we can do the job again in South Africa. I will go back to South Korea and start working on our strategy.”

Nigeria are not the force that captivated the world at the 1998 tournament, when players like Jay-Jay Okocha and Sunday Oliseh illuminated their participation, but in Everton’s Joseph Yobo, Chelsea’s John Mikel Obi and Wolfsburg’s Obafemi Martins they possess a steely spine.

Greece edged Ukraine by a single goal in their qualifying play-off after finishing behind Switzerland in a less than daunting group.

Otto Rehhagel, the man who masterminded their stunning Euro 2004 success, remains at the helm and can call upon seasoned veterans from the Euro adventure as well as 10-goal European qualifying zone top scorer Theofanis Gekas.

France, Portugal face nervy World Cup play-offs

November 18, 2009

Three years ago France beat Portugal in the World Cup semi-final – on Wednesday both could fail to even reach the 2010 finals as they take narrow leads into their play-off second leg clashes.

France, champions in 1998, hold a 1-0 lead over the Republic of Ireland while Portugal hold the same advantage over Bosnia Hercegovina though the French unlike the Portuguese have the added advantage of it being an away goal.

The other two play-offs see Euro 2008 semi-finalists Russia also looking a bit shaky as they take a 2-1 lead to Slovenia while Ukraine – who made the 2006 finals – have everything to play for when they host Euro 2004 champions Greece in Donetsk as they are tied at 0-0. Related article: No room for panic, says Russia’s Hiddink

The French-Irish clash looks likely to be a high octane affair after the angry exchanges between rival players at the end of the match in Dublin on Saturday provoked by derogatory remarks by Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra. Related article: France eye World Cup slot

“They were disrespectful and anti-Irish,” commented Irish midfielder Keith Andrews.

“Everyone knows what he (Diarra) said but we don’t need those to get ourselves motivated for the match.”

The Irish, though, face a mountain of a task to overcome the deficit as they have not beaten a top-ranked side away from home since beating Turkey 3-1 in the Euro ‘92 qualifiers – which they didn’t reach and to be fair the Turks really became a top side from 2000 onwards.

However, their veteran Italian coach Giovanni Trapattoni used another statistic to add evidence to his belief that the men in green can turn it around.

“I have reminded my players that we scored in every one of our away matches in the qualifiers save against Montenegro (including world champions Italy) – a group that was of a better quality than that of France,” said the former Italy national coach. Related article: Italians playing for World Cup places

“Winning 1-0 may be enough as then it goes to extra-time and then penalties,” he added.

His France counterpart Raymond Domenech was frank about where he saw the situation lying.

“We have to play, because for me the match begins at 0-0,” said the sphinx-like coach, who guided France to the 2006 final but has rarely won over either the fans or the press.

“Our strong point is our ability to score goals. There is no point thinking they are coming here to pose us problems. We have to take the match by the scruff of the neck. Playing to win is the best fashion of doing it.”

Bosnia and Portugal’s match should be an interesting encounter given that Bosnian coach Miroslav Blazevic ever the eccentric handler – though it worked wonders with Croatia in the 1998 finals when he took them to the semi-finals where they led France before losing 2-1 – has promised some savage entertainment.

“In the next few days I will have to create such an atmosphere among the players so they attack the Portuguese like hungry wolves,” said the 74-year-old in an interview with the Dnevni Avaz daily. Related article: Bosnia coach says squad will be ‘hungry wolves’

The Bosnians can take great heart that not only will there be no Cristiano Ronaldo as in the first leg but that they hit the woodwork three times in the first leg.

With this in mind the Portuguese are convinced they should go all out in attack to get what could be a crucial away goal. Related article: Shevchenko warns Ukraine of tough battle

“When it is necessary to defend, we have to do it well, but we will attack when the possibility arises,” said Chelsea’s veteran defender Ricardo Carvalho, who was a member of the side that reached the 2006 World Cup semi-finals.

“We are not going to play defensively, because if we score, that will complicate things for them.”

Coach Guus Hiddink is optimistic Russia will make it to the 2010 World Cup despite play-off rivals Slovenia grabbing an away goal.

Ahead of Wednesday’s second leg in Maribor Hiddink said there was no cause for panic.

“Of course, I was dissappointed with the result,” the Dutchman said.

“We were leading 2-0 and had plenty of chances to increase our advantage.

“But I thing there’s no need to go from one extreme to another. We did not lose the first match we won it! And there’s no room for panic.”

Ukraine star Andrei Shevchenko has warned his teammates to be prepared for a tough battle against Greece.

“We and Greece have a 50-50 chance to reach next year’s finals,” Shevchenko said.

“In Athens we played very good in defence and, I believe, we could repeat such a performance in Donetsk.”

Ronaldo hopes to play in ´clasico´

November 13, 2009

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo said Thursday he was recovering well from his ankle injury and hopes to play in the “clasico” match at Barcelona on November 29.

“Everything is going very well, I have started running again and I think I will start training with the team next week,” the Portuguese winger told Spanish media at a ceremony at Real’s Bernebeu stadium.

“Of course, I want to play against Barcelona, but I want to play again before then,” including against Zurich in the Champions League on November 25.

Ronaldo injured his right ankle in Real’s 3-0 Champions League victory over Marseille at the end of September and aggravated the problem while playing for Portugal on October 10.

On Tuesday he was ruled out of his country’s crucial World Cup play-off matches against Bosnia-Herzegovina on November 14 and 18 after undergoing medical tests on the injury in Lisbon.

Both Portugal – World Cup semi-finalists in 2006 – and Real had been locked in a battle over Ronaldo with the club insisting that he was not fit enough to travel.

Ronaldo, bought from Manchester United last summer for a world record 94 million euros, is the top scorer in the Primera Liga with five goals and in the Champions League with four.

Spanish media have reported that Real coach Manuel Pellegrini’s job is in jeopardy after the team was eliminated from the Spanish Cup by third division minnows Alcorcon.

Ferguson backs English clubs to excel in Europe

November 3, 2009

Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager of Manchester United, is adamant that English clubs will continue to dominate the latter stages of the Champions League this season.

England’s Premier League has supplied a finalist in each of the last five seasons – with United losing to Barcelona in European club football’s show-piece match in Rome in May – and three of the four semi-finalists for the past three.

But there have been suggestions the standard of English football is on the decline while Spanish giants Real Madrid have been spending lavishly on players in a bid to make sure they reach the Champions League final due to be played at their own Bernabeu Stadium next May.

Liverpool, United’s bitter English rivals, are struggling in their first round Champions League group but Ferguson said talk of the Premier League’s top teams being on the slide was premature.

“The English teams will be involved in the semi-finals again,” he said.

“They have been very dominant in the tournament for the last six or seven years. That is shown by the evidence of the latter stages and I think it will be the same this year.”

Ferguson added: “Obviously Barcelona are one of the favourites. You cannot dismiss them.

“But there is no question in my mind that the English teams will compete for the trophy.”

United will secure their place in the last 16 with two games to spare if they beat CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford later Tuesday.

Chelsea are equally well positioned after their opening three games, while Arsenal are also on course to reach the knockout stages.

By ontrast, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich are currently outside the automatic qualification spots, while AC Milan and Real Madrid have already lost matches in a group they were expected to dominate.

Portugal ease Sweden out of play-off picture

October 15, 2009

Portugal rescued an unconvincing World Cup 2010 qualifying campaign by securing a play-off place with a 4-0 victory over Malta here on Wednesday.

Carlos Queiroz’s side prevailed thanks to goals from Nani, Simao, Miguel and Edinho to finish second in Group 1 ahead of Sweden, who missed out on qualification despite beating Albania 4-1.

Queiroz said: “For sure some points lost at home made life difficult for us but the important thing is that we made it and now we have to prepare for these two finals.”

Reflecting on this all-important win the former Manchester United assistant coach added: “We played well, we scored goals and the fans were fantastic,

“We fought from end to end with the aim of reaching our objective.”

Talisman Cristiano Ronaldo was forced to miss Portugal’s match with an ankle injury, but it was his replacement and former Manchester United team-mate Nani who broke the deadlock, rifling into the top corner after 14 minutes.

The former Sporting Lisbon winger saw another effort strike the post just after the half-hour mark before Simao settled the home side’s nerves with a fine finish from the edge of the box on the stroke of half-time.

Miguel put Portugal further ahead in the second half before Edinho struck in the last minute, as the 2006 World Cup semi-finalists celebrated a result which means Sweden and their 69 million-euro Barcelona striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will watch next summer’s South African showpiece from home.

Portugal endured a terrible start to their bid to reach South Africa, winning just two of their first seven games and at one stage registering three back-to-back goalless draws.

Sweden’s 1-0 defeat to Denmark on Saturday allowed them to move into second place, though, and the win over Malta means they join seven other sides in the draw for the two-legged European play-offs, which take place in November.

Olympiakos centre-back Olof Mellberg scored twice for Sweden in Solna, with Marcus Berg and Anders Svensson also on target for the hosts and Hamid Salihi netting a consolation for Albania.

Denmark’s victory over Sweden at the weekend meant they were already assured of qualification as group winners although they rounded off their campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Hungary in Copenhagen.

Germany, Italy, close in on South Africa 2010

October 10, 2009

Footballing superpowers Italy and Germany can seal their places at the 2010 World Cup on Saturday as qualifying for South Africa enters the home straight.

England, Spain and the Netherlands are the only European countries to have already secured their tickets for next year’s finals leaving six automatic places still up for grabs.

A further four countries will gain qualification through the play-offs.

World Cup winners Italy travel to Dublin to play the Republic of Ireland requiring only a point to guarantee their presence in South Africa as winners of Group Eight.

Germany are in Moscow to take on Guus Hiddink’s Russia where a win for Joachim Loew’s side will see them safely through from Group Four.

Portugal, semi-finalists in 2006, have struggled in Group One but victory over Hungary last month has given Cristiano Ronaldo and company an outside chance of making it.

The Portuguese are lying third and must take maximum points when they host the Hungarians in Lisbon to keep their slim hopes alive.

Denmark can seal top spot if they beat Sweden in a top-of-the-table clash in Copenhagen.

France are fighting for their World Cup lives in Group Seven.

Distant are the memories of Les Bleus’ stirring journey to the 2006 World Cup final and their penalty shoot-out loss to the Italians as they lie second, four points adrift of table toppers Serbia.

Raymond Domenech’s men improved their prospects of making it to South Africa with a gutsy 1-1 draw away to the Serbs last time out and can guarantee a play-off with victory over minnows the Faroe Islands.

Serbia however could be docked points should there be crowd trouble in their final two qualifiers against Romania and Lithuania.

The threat was made by FIFA after incidents during previous qualifying matches against France, Austria and Romania.

England’s inspired run of eight wins out of eight has left Fabio Capello’s side in the enviable position of being assured top spot in Group Six irrespective of their results against Ukraine and Belarus on Wednesday.

That’s left Ukraine and Croatia in a fierce scrap for the table’s runners-up spot.

Like England Euro 2008 champions Spain have coasted through Group Five leaving Bosnia-Herzegovina favourites to go into the play-offs, something they can guarantee if they beat Estonia.

The tighest table is Group Three where any one of five teams are still in contention with Slovakia needing just one point to ensure automatic qualification.

In Dublin, Ireland are facing an injury crisis with key winger Damien Duff, midfielders Steven Reid and Darron Gibson and striker Caleb Folan all out of contention for the Italy clash in Croke Park.

There is also a doubt over Aston Villa centreback Richard Dunne who was forced to sit out training on Wednesday because of a bruised ankle.

Ireland’s Italian manager Giovanni Trapattoni is optimistic that the Aston Villa defender, a mainstay of the Irish side, will recover in time.

Over in Moscow Russia’s artful Dutch coach Hiddink is plotting the downfall of three-time world champions Germany.

Hiddink compared Russia’s task to the one they faced two years ago ahead of the deciding match with England in Moscow in Euro 2008 qualifying.

“Yes, the situation looks pretty similar but now we are more experienced team than we were two years ago,” Hiddink said. “And I hope we will receive the same furious support of our fans that we had then.”

Germany meanwhile are intent on wrapping up their qualification campaign with a game in hand.

Midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger said: “Our goal is to decide the World Cup qualification places for ourselves on Saturday.

“We are all united on that: We travel to Moscow in order to win.

“We know Russia has an extremely strong team and we respect them.

“But we have already beaten the Russians and to go there standing tall as table leaders. We have every reason to be self-confident.”

Barca sink Kiev to get defence up and running

September 30, 2009

Holders Barcelona recorded their first Champions League win of the new campaign with goals from Lionel Messi and substitute Pedro securing a 2-0 win over Dinamo Kiev at Camp Nou on Tuesday.

After a perfect five wins in the league Barca kick-started their European defence and replace Kiev at the top of Group F on four points after Inter Milan drew 1-1 with Rubin Kazan.

Argentine Messi, top-scorer in last season’s Champions League with nine goals, scored Barca’s first goal after 25 minutes before substitute Pedro, the latest hope from the club’s youth team, added a second to bring up a scoreline that still didn’t reflect their dominance.

“I was fortunate enough to score and just hope it is not the last,” said Pedro. “I have to take advantage of the minutes I get in this team and try to make my mark.

“It is important to get a first win in the Champions League so we can relax a bit and be at the top of the table although we still have to keep on working hard and winning.”

With French international striker Thierry Henry out injured, Spanish international Andres Iniesta, Barcelona?s Champions League semi-final hero against Chelsea last season, made his first start since the 2-0 final win over Manchester United in May.

After several months out with a thigh injury Iniesta has been bedded in slowly with substitute appearances but he looked razor-sharp and had a penalty shout turned down on the quarter-hour mark after he went down after having his shirt tugged.

Dinamo, semi-finalists in 1999, went close themselves though when Barca’s Brazilian defender Dani Alves had to shuffle his feet quickly to clear a ball zipped across the penalty area.

Then with 25 minutes gone Barca registered their first Champions League goal in this season?s competition and, predictably, it was Messi who scored it.

The Argentine, who has been scoring freely in the league, drifted inside with a burst of pace and before the Kiev defence had time to react he had curled a trademark finish into the corner.

A minute later Zlatan Ibrahimovic produced a vintage pass for Messi but the chance went begging and when the pair reversed roles shortly afterwards Ibrahimovic saw his chip blocked.

The two stars have struck up a real rapport despite having just started playing together and were carving a hapless Kiev open at will.

In contrast, former AC Milan striking icon Andriy Shevchenko, celebrating his 33rd birthday, was starved of service up front for the away side.

A youthful Shevchenko scored a first-half hat-trick for Kiev in a 4-0 group stage win over Barcelona at Camp Nou back in November 1997 but he didn’t have a look-in this time around as Barca controlled proceedings.

In the second half Ibrahimovic and Messi resumed their torture of the Kiev defence and both had chances to score in the first five minutes after the interval.

After 67 minutes Ibrahimovic was denied again as his drilled shot was well saved after a great run and pass from Seydou Keita.

The second goal finally came in the 76th minute with the ubiquitous Ibrahimovic setting up substitute Pedro to slot home after neatly shifting the ball onto his left foot.

Barcelona sit a point above Kiev at the top, with Inter Milan two points back in third, and the champions’ next match is against Rubin Kazan on October 20.

Eduardo diving ban over-turned by UEFA

September 14, 2009

Arsenal striker Eduardo’s two-game Champions League ban for diving has been over-turned by UEFA’s Appeals Body, UEFA announced on Monday.

The Brazil-born Croatian was retrospectively punished after being found to have deceived the referee when winning a penalty in Arsenal’s Champions League play-off return leg at home to Celtic last month.

Arsenal appealed after saying that the decision was “deeply biased” and based on “errors” and “uncertainties”.

“Following examination of all the evidence, notably the declarations of both the referee and the referees’ assessor, as well as the various video footage, it was not established to the panel’s satisfaction that the referee had been deceived in taking his decision on the penalty,” read a statement on the UEFA website.

The decision to ban Eduardo, which was taken by UEFA’s Control and Disciplinary Body on September 1, was subsequently “annulled”.

During Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over Celtic, Eduardo won a first-half penalty, which he then scored to put his side 1-0 up, after going to ground under a challenge from visiting goalkeeper Artur Boruc.

The London side, losing semi-finalists last season, begin their Champions League campaign with a trip to Belgian champions Standard Liege in Group H on Wednesday.
