Greece: Panathinaikos and PAOK victorious

April 6, 2009

The battle for second place in Greece remains undecided as both Panathinaikos and rivals PAOK Saloniki won on Sunday.

Panathiakos earned a 2-0 win over AO Xanthi with Dimitris Salginpidis netting the opener on 42 minutes. The second goal came from Gabriel in the 66th.

PAOK were similarly successful at Asteras Tripolis with goals from Ilias Anastasakos and Sergio Conceicao.

Olympiakos still unstoppable in Greece

February 15, 2009

Olympiakos are still on course to win this year’s Greek league, as the Athens outfit beat Aris Saloniki to add yet another win to their impressive account.

Predrag Djordjevic put Olympiakos in the lead after 23 minutes and Argentinian Luciano Galletti added another with 15 minutes to go. At this point, Aris were already a man down following Vitolo’s second booking on 69 minutes.

Vassilis Torosidis scored an own goal to give Aris a ray of hope in the 89th minute but Olympiakos avoided further damage and secured the win.

PAOK Saloniki moved into second place, temporarily at least, following a 0-3 win at Levadiakos. Sergio Conceicao, Olivier Sorlin and Vladimir Ivic (penalty) scored.

Fourth-placed AEK Athens were heading for a dissappointing goalless draw with Thrasivoulos Fylis, but Panagiotis Tachtsidis’ injury time goal earned the home side three valuable points.

PAOK held by Aris in local derby

January 25, 2009

PAOK Saloniki were held to a goalless draw by local rivals Aris Saloniki on Sunday, and do move into second place but allow Olympiakos to extend their advantage to 11 points.

The only event to remember from the Thessaloniki clash was the red card for veteran Sergio Conceicao on 38 minutes.

As Panathinaikos lost to Ergotelis on Saturday, PAOK are now second in the Greek lead. However, the gap with Olympiakos grows from nine points ahead of this weekend to 11 points now.

AEK Athens applied pressure on PAOK and Panathinaikos with a convincing 3-0 win over Panionios. Blanco scored on 7 minutes, Edinho close to the half hour mark and Scocco added a third early in the second half.
