Twente close on PSV in Eredivisie
February 22, 2010

FC Twente closed on Eredivisie leaders PSV after a 1-0 win over Willem II on Sunday, while the Eindhoven outfit gave away two points against Sparta Rotterdam.
Things were going according to plan for PSV after Otman Bakkal put Fred Rutten’s side ahead in the 14th minute against Sparta, and very few would have expected the visitors to get the equaliser through Rydell Poepon in the third minute of added time, 1-1.
Twente had no easy match either, but did manage a 1-0 win over Willem II with Peter Wisgerhof scoring the only goal after 54 minutes.
As such, the gap between PSV and Twente is now just one point with ten games to go.
Third-placed Ajax cruised to a 4-0 win over Vitesse with first-half goals from Siem de Jong, Luis Suarez and Paul Verhaegh, who accidentally scored in his own goal. De Jong added another goal near the hour mark.

Nigeria call up injured Mikel Obi for crucial qualifier
November 3, 2009

Nigeria have selected Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi, who is sidelined with an ankle injury, for a crucial World Cup qualifier against Kenya on November 14 in Nairobi.
Mikel missed Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying match at home to Mozambique last month as a result of the injury.
Russia-based right fullback Chidi Odiah has been reconsidered by coach Shuaibu Amodu after he was frozen out of the team’s last three matches.
Nigeria need to win in Kenya and hope Tunisia do not do so in Mozambique so as to finish top of Group Two and qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa

Van Basten out as coach at Ajax
May 6, 2009

THE HAGUE (AFP) – Marco van Basten has stood down as coach of Ajax after failing to guide the Dutch giants into next year’s Champions League, the club announced Wednesday on its website.
The former star striker for the Dutch national side “had reached the conclusion that he had failed to achieve the goals he had set at the start of the season and that he would be unable to do any better next season,” a club statement said.
The 44-year-old Van Basten took over at his former club last July after being Dutch national coach for four years, notably at the 2006 World Cup finals and Euro 2008.
The former European club champions are currently lying third in the Dutch first division behind unfashionable AZ Alkmaar and FC Twente and with just one game to go cannot grab one of the two spots available for next season’s Champions League.
The final straw was a 4-0 defeat away at Sparta Rotterdam last weekend.
Their last game of the season on Sunday against FC Twente will see assistant coach John van’t Schip in charge on an interim basis.

Fulham´s Etuhu gets Nigeria recall
April 25, 2009

LAGOS (AFP) – Nigeria have recalled Fulham midfielder Dickson Etuhu for World Cup qualifiers against Kenya and Tunisia in June.
Etuhu, who was snubbed by coach Shuaibu Amodu for last month’s World Cup game against Mozambique, is part of a 29-man squad that will also play two friendlies against Republic Ireland on May 27 in London and France on June 2 in Saint Etienne.
Etuhu last played for Nigeria at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana after he was first capped by the country against Mexico the previous year.
Several uncapped players have also been named in the squad, including Hamburg midfielder Dennis Aogo, Elderson Echiejile (Rennes) and Chibuzo Okonkwo from Nigerian league leaders Bayelsa United.
Nigeria will host Kenya on June 7 in Abuja and a fortnight later travel for a crunch tie against group leaders Tunisia.

PSV’s Mendez sidelined with Achilles injury
March 21, 2009
Dutch side PSV Eindhoven could be without midfielder Edison Mendez for two weeks. The Ecuadorian is suffering from an Achilles injury.
As a result, the South American should miss the league match with Vitesse and possibly Sparta Rotterdam.
The player’s replacement is likely to be either Otman Bakkal or Haibin Zhou, who could make his debut against Vitesse this Saturday.
With seven games to go in the Eredivisie, PSV are currently in fifth place and already of contention for the title after four consecutive championships.

Netherlands: Alkmaar win, Lazovic saves PSV
February 22, 2009
AZ Alkmaar added another three points to their season tally as the Dutch title continues to near, while defending champions PSV Eindhoven scored late to earn a small win at FC Groningen.
AZ travelled to face Heracles Almelo, who are dangerously close to the relegation zone. The man that made the difference was Mounir El Hamdaoui, who scored in the 53rd and 94th minutes to earn his side a 0-2 victory.
The match between Groningen and PSV had 0-0 written all over it, but the reigning champions made the difference three minutes into added time when Serbian Danko Lazovic netted for 0-1 to silence the home fans.
Second-placed FC Twente visit Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday, in an attempt to bring the gap with AZ back to nine points.
