Jo joins Neill at Galatasaray

January 22, 2010

Brazil striker Jo has joined Turkish club Galatasaray on loan until the end of this season, it was announced Thursday.

Jo was on a season-long loan from Manchester City to their Premier League rivals Everton, where he scored seven goals in 36 appearances during two spells at Goodison Park, but the Merseysiders confirmed that deal had been cut short.

He did not endear himself to manager David Moyes by returning to Brazil earlier this month without the Everton boss’s permission and a club statement said: “A season-long loan deal for the player had been agreed between Everton and Manchester City in the summer, but this has been cut short.

“Earlier this month David Moyes revealed that Jo had been suspended by the club for returning to Brazil without permission. That sanction proved temporary but Jo’s association with Everton has now ended,” the statement added.

Jo joined Australia defender Lucas Neill in leaving Everton for Galatasaray.

Neill only arrived at Everton in the close-season but left Goodison Park in a transfer reported to be worth 750,000 pounds (1.22 million dollars)

Jo came to City from Russian side CSKA Moscow in July 2008 for a fee of around 18 million pounds (29 million dollars).

But the 22-year-old did not become a regular at Eastlands, hence his loan spells with Everton.

A statement on Galatasaray’s official website said: “Our club have agreed to sign Brazilian Joao Alves de Assis Silva (Jo’s full name) on loan until the end of the season from English Premier League team Manchester City.

“He is welcome and we wish him success in the yellow and red jersey.”

Feyenoord departure not impossible, says Makaay

January 7, 2010

Former international striker Roy Makaay expects to finish his season at Dutch outfit Feyenoord, but would not want to rule out a move just yet.

In recent media reports, Makaay was linked with German sides Nürnberg and Alemannia Aachen, although both stories are untrue according to the player.

In an interview with magazine Voetbal International, the veteran downplayed the reports and said that these always occur when the transfer window opens.

“This is how it always goes. But I agree with Jansen (Rob, his agent) that he’ll only call me when a club is seriously interested.

“I want to make clear that I plan to finish my season at Feyenoord. But I also know that football is unpredictable. The situation can always change. I’m not saying I want to leave, I just can’t rule it out.”

Makaay, 34, joined Feyenoord in 2007 after very successful spells at Deportivo la Coruña and Bayern Munich.

Volz gets Schalke chance

January 3, 2010

Former Arsenal and Fulham defender Moritz Volz has been handed a chance to resurrect his career after Schalke 04 have signed the 26-year-old.

Volz had left the Royal Blues to join the Gunners in 1999 and spent further spells with Wimbledon, Fulham and Ipswich, but he has been without a club since July after his contract expired at Craven Cottage.

Schalke manager Felix Magath now wants to take a close look at the full-back, who was part of the 26-man squad that flew to Jerez this morning for a one-week training camp ahead of the Bundesliga restart on January 15.

With the future of Schalke’s current first-choice right full-back Rafinha unclear after he reported for training late, Volz has the chance to not only earn a contract but also stake a claim for a place in the Royal Blues’ team.

Volz earned one call-up to the Germany squad in 2004 but has yet to win an international cap.

Man United´s ´Busby Babe´ Scanlon dies aged 74

December 23, 2009

Former Manchester United player Albert Scanlon, one of the survivors of the Munich air disaster, has died aged 74, the club said on Wednesday.

Scanlon, who was one of the ‘Busby Babes’ earning their nickname for being trained up through the youth system to playing for the first team under manager Matt Busby, made his debut for United in 1954 aged 19 and had reportedly been unwell for some time.

Eight of his teammates and three officials were killed when their plane crashed in a blizzard at Munich airport in 1958 following a European Cup match.

Scanlon suffered a broken leg and fractured skull in the crash, but recovered to play again in the 1958/59 season, scoring 16 goals to help United finish runners-up in the league.

Scanlon left Old Trafford in 1960 ending a six-year association with the club, that included 127 senior appearances and 35 goals, United said.

His departure was followed by spells at Newcastle, Mansfield and Lincoln.

“Manchester United is sad to report the death of former player Albert Scanlon,” the club said on its website.

“Everyone at Manchester United sends deepest condolences to Albert’s family and friends.”

Nürnberg sack coach Oenning

December 22, 2009

After entering the winter break second from bottom in the Bundesliga, Nürnberg have parted ways with manager Michael Oenning.

Oenning, 44, guided Nürnberg to promotion last season with a second place finish in the German second division, but they have lost four straight games to leave them on just 12 points from 17 games this season.

The final straw for club management was Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of Köln, a team that had managed to score just seven goals in 16 matches prior to Sunday’s game.

The Nürnberg job was Oenning’s first as a first team manager in Germany, though he had spent spells in the training staffs of Borussia Mönchengladbach, Wolfsburg and Bochum.

Nürnberg president Franz Schäfer wished Oenning well at a press conference on Monday but did not announce if a replacement or caretaker manager had been named.

The Bundesliga is in its winter break until 15 January.

Donovan, LA agree to deal; Everton move likely

December 17, 2009

American midfielder Landon Donovan agreed to a new four-year contract with Major League Soccer side Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday. The deal also moves Donovan close to a loan deal with Everton.

Donovan, 27, put signature to the contract with Los Angeles that locks him up through the end of the 2013 MLS season. In addition, the contract allows Donovan to pursue short-term loan moves to other clubs, provided he returns to America for the start of the season.

Everton and Los Angeles have been in talks recently about landing the American captain on loan through March, at which point he would return home for the MLS campaign.

Donovan has had unsuccessful spells at Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich in recent years, but has been a talisman for Los Angeles. They were beaten finalists in the MLS championship by Real Salt Lake last month.

Ben Haim and Yebda join Portsmouth

September 1, 2009

Portsmouth made a double swoop for Manchester City defender Tal Ben Haim and Benfica midfielder Hassan Yebda on Tuesday.

Israel international Ben Haim has agreed a four-year contract and his free transfer will be rubber-stamped once he has been given a work permit.

The 27-year-old, who made just nine starts for City following his switch from Chelsea last year, could make his debut against Bolton – another of his former clubs – on September 12.

Ben Haim joins a team who are bottom of the Premier League after four successive defeats but he is determined to help them climb out of the relegation zone.

“It is a big challenge because after four games we have no points but I am ready for the challenge,” Ben Haim told Portsmouth’s website.

“I want to help Pompey get some good results and take them to the position they belong in.

“We’ve bought a few players in now and I believe we can turn things around and win some games.”

Pompey boss Paul Hart also landed Yebda from Portuguese club Benfica.

The 25-year-old French-born Algerian has moved to Fratton Park on a season-long loan.

He began his career with Auxerre and has also had spells at Laval and Le Mans.

Bari claim Donati deal

August 28, 2009

Serie A outfit Bari claim they have reached an agreement with Scottish giants Celtic regarding Italian midfielder Massimo Donati.

The Italian midfielder has spent the last two years at Parkhead, but now looks set to head back to his homeland.

Donati began his career at Atalanta, before moving on to AC Milan in 2001, and struggled to make an impact at the Giuseppe Meazza, though, and was often sent out on loan, taking in spells at Parma, Torino, Sampdoria, Messina and back at Atalanta.

The 28-year-old then moved to Scotland in 2007 and helped Celtic to the SPL title in his first season at Parkhead.

Donati soon fell out of favour under Gordon Strachan, though, and was tipped to be on the move during the 2009 January transfer window.

He ultimately remained with the Hoops and was brought back into the first-team fold on a regular basis by new boss Tony Mowbray.

However, Celtic have accepted an approach from Bari for his services and he is expected to be on his way back to Italy before the summer window slams shut.

“Celtic have accepted Bari’s offer for the transfer of midfielder Massimo Donati,” read a statement released by Bari.

“The contract formalities will be completed on Friday.

“The player has agreed a four-year deal and he is expected in Bari on Monday.”

City snap up Sylvinho on one-year deal

August 25, 2009

Big-spending Manchester City have signed veteran Brazilian defender Sylvinho on a one-year deal, the club announced Monday.

Sylvinho, 35, was a free agent after leaving Barcelona at the end of last season and has previously played in the English Premier League for Arsenal, for whom he made 55 appearances between 1999 and 2001.

City boss Mark Hughes has signed the experienced defender essentially as cover for England left back Wayne Bridge.

Sylvinho won the Champions League twice and three La Liga titles with Barcelona as well as picking up six caps for Brazil in a career which has also included spells at Celta Vigo and Corinthians.

He could make his City debut in a League Cup second round tie at Crystal Palace on Thursday.

“Sylvinho has a wealth of experience at the very top level, having represented Brazil and played for some of the very top clubs in Europe,” said Hughes.

“When the chance presented itself to bring him to Manchester City as a free agent I saw it as representing excellent business for us. Sylvinho won the European Cup last season at Barcelona and he will strengthen our defensive options.”

The Sylvinho deal was announced as City were putting the finishing touches to a deal to sign England centreback Joleon Lescott from Everton for a reported fee of 24 million pounds.

The fee was agreed late on Sunday and Lescott was undergoing a medical on Monday.

City have also secured the services of former Arsenal centreback Kolo Toure, who joined earlier this month in a 16-million-pound deal.
