We predict the worst … you show us how it’s done
January 29, 2010

It seems like ages since we last managed a proper weekend programme* but at last, here we are, with an all-singing, all-dancing snow-free extravaganza, with the dubious attraction of Arsenal v Man Utd’s traditional handbags at 10 paces highly competitive fixture being shown in 3D at select boozers across the land.
Below you will find the Reuters Soccer Blog standings and predictions for the week but remember, we’d like you to join in as well. If you’re a newcomer, you get 10 points for correctly predicting the exact score from the weekend’s Premier League game, or two for getting the right result. (If you’ve been with us for a while, it’s five points and one point).
Being on double-bubble means you can catch us up in no time, especially with huge bonus points on offer for incidental details like scorers, penalty misses, substitutions, or indeed anything else. So please send in your scores and have the satisfaction of out-predicting the stat-obsessed football nerds here at Reuters Soccer Blog Towers.

A New Year, a new chance to show your prediction skills
January 5, 2010

Happy New Year to you all, and welcome back to our score predictions, as English football continues with the breathless pace of Jason Bourne reciting Gilbert & Sullivan* while performing vodka-soaked surgery on his own left lung and driving off a roof (you can guess what the Christmas Day movie was in our house…)
After the brief respite of an FA Cup weekend, we’re back with a bang on the predictions trail, with one match on Tuesday, another on Wednesday and a full weekend programme.
The festive period was equally messy, and I know a lot of people failed to get their predictions in on time. In the spirit of good will, if you missed out over the holidays, feel free to give yourself a 10-point bump to ensure you don’t fall too much off the pace. (And 10 points is more than many of our panellists managed).
Remember: you get five points for the correct score, or one for the correct result but the wrong scoreline. As another festive gift, anyone who wants to start now will get double points on every game for the next two months, meaning you’re almost certain to catch us old-timers up in no time.
So don’t be shy! Send in your predictions via the comments button and put us to shame.
Current standings:

UPDATE:Warm yourselves up with our hot predictions league
December 22, 2009

MONDAY UPDATE: Well the cold weather only put pay to Wigan v Bolton in the end so I guess we’ll have to count the points for that game whenever it’s rescheduled (that will be a nightmare to remember and a challenge for my maths).
Below are the updated scores for the panel, who thanks purely to luck had a better weekend than usual despite there being one game less! Simon Evans guessed right that City boss Mark Hughes wouldn’t last til Xmas Eve, but in reality the decision to sack him had been taken long before the game. Given the festive spirit, Simon can have the dubious bonus point.
Season’s greetings to all, I reckon we’ll have to skip the Boxing Day fixtures given panel members and contributors will be too full of brussel sprouts and brandy butter to file their predictions but we’ll see.
Reuters Soccer blog panel: Patrick Johnston 172, Paul Radford 160, Mitch Phillips 154, Neil Maidment 136, Simon Evans 125, Mike Collett 126, Mark Meadows 126, Kevin Fylan 126, Julien Pretot 120, Miles Evans 107, Martyn Herman 95, Asia Sports Desk 93, Sonia Oxley 56, Justin Palmer 41

What better way to warm ourselves up than our Premier League predictions competition. Admittedly our panel have not exactly been red hot of late (see the midweek matches) but some of our outside contributors have outshone us all.
Not an obvious standout game this weekend but I guess Gianfranco Zola’s struggling West Ham against his former side Chelsea is an interesting one so we’ll make that our double pointer. Remember, one point for a correct result and five for getting the score spot on.
Please play along in the comments below and don’t be put off about having to register, we are not MI5. I’ll add in our panel’s predictions just as soon as my frozen fingers thaw out.

UPDATE – Christmas has come early: Midweek prediction special
December 18, 2009

Thursday Update: I have very little to shout about personally after my confident predictions of Liverpool scoring nine and Chelsea 10 proved to be a little wide of the mark.
Still, looking on the bright side, I still got a couple of points for those 2-1 wins and the way I’ve been plummeting lately I’ll take what I can get.
Just a brief update today as we’ll be back with more tomorrow morning. Phew. Breathless pace these days in the Premier League, what?
How about a winter break?
In the mean time, I’ve updated the table:

Quantum theories of score prediction won’t help you now, Mr Bond
December 12, 2009

In a week of Nobel Prize presentations, our thoughts here at Reuters Soccer Blog have naturally turned to Niels Bohr, and we can’t help agreeing with the Danish physicist’s observation that prediction is very difficult … particularly about the future.
We’ve tried everything to get better at predicting the weekend scores but no matter how much we study the form, no matter how many statistical models we, erm, model, no matter how many random numbers we generate or pins we stick in, we remain at least as uncertain as any Heisenberg principle you care to mention.
Let’s recap: All you have to do is predict the scores of the weekend matches in English football’s top flight. If you get the score dead on, it’s five points. If you get the right result, wrong scoreline, it’s one point. Easy, huh?
Well, not for us. The Reuters Soccer Blog panel continues to be more Call My Bluff than QI. Here are the scores as they stand:
Reuters Soccer blog panel: Patrick Johnston 146, Mitch Phillips 132, Paul Radford 122, Simon Evans 113, Mark Meadows 112, Mike Collett 111, Kevin Fylan 100, Neil Maidment 100, Miles Evans 89, Julien Pretot 89, Asia Sports Desk 79, Martyn Herman 74, Justin Palmer 41, Sonia Oxley 37
Rest of the World: Chipking is on at least 112, sean harrison is up to 104 (after a late start, too) and there are plenty of others, slightly shier with their declarations, comfortably beating the likes of me.
Remember, this is all done on the honour system, so send us your predictions in the comments, count up your scores, let us know, and you get to lord it over us here.
Double points this week on … Liverpool v Arsenal.
And don’t be put off by the new registration system for comments. It only takes a second and, if the cookie monster doesn’t show up to wreck everything, you’ll be golden.

UPDATE: Derby fever hits the predictions league
December 1, 2009

Monday update: You would think 14 games into the season we would have learnt who was likely to beat who in the Premier League. Sadly not. I did OK for a change but only Martyn Herman really covered himself in glory with two five pointers for Villa 1-1 Spurs and Manchester City collecting yet another draw against Hull City.
But I wouldn’t celebrate like Jimmy Bullard just yet, Martyn, you’re still third bottom.
So how did you do? Let us know in the comments. If you predicted at least one Drogba goal you can have a bonus point but I doubt anybody thought Rooney would get a hat-trick. As for Liverpool actually winning, well they had to get a flukey deflection sometime…
Updated Reuters Soccer Blog panel scores: Patrick Johnston 134, Mitch Phillips 118, Paul Radford 113, Mike Collett 105, Mark Meadows 99, Simon Evans 95, Kevin Fylan 91, Miles Evans 89, Neil Maidment 81, Julien Pretot 74, Asia Sports Desk 68, Martyn Herman 61, Justin Palmer 41, Sonia Oxley 31 (bonus point for getting predictions in early)

Friday post: Some bumper Premier League matches this weekend but will that mean we’ll be seeing bumper points totals in our predictions competition?
A Merseyside derby is probably the last match Liverpool’s Rafa Benitez wanted and if they lose, it will surely be the worse week of his managerial career. Club bosses say his job is safe but bottom side Portsmouth also gave their backing to Paul Hart just a few weeks ago…
New Pompey manager Avram Grant takes on Manchester United hoping it turns out better than the last time he met them in Moscow (see photo).
Oh, and I almost forgot, it’s Arsenal v Chelsea too! Let’s make that our double pointer this week. Remember you get one point for correct result and five for a correct score.
Here’s the panel’s latest standings with this weekend’s fixtures and their wild guesses underneath. Give us your predictions in the comments.

No replay hopes here … the score predictions are back
November 21, 2009

Tired of Thierry? Had enough of Henry? Exhausted at the attempts of headline writers around the world to come up with a catchy way of describing Ireland’s unfortunate World Cup exit? (The Hand of God II, Le Hand of God, La Main de Dieu, Thierrygate … and that’s just us on Reuters Soccer Blog).
If so, we have just the thing for you, as our predictions game is back with a bang following that pesky World Cup break.
Remember the name Rafa? The big big man is back, quite possibly with Sir Steven Gerrard, as the Premier League returns with a belter: Liverpool v Man City at Anfield, 1245 Saturday.
Elsewhere, Man Utd need to put the Chelsea defeat behind them at home to Everton, while Wigan Athletic will have to watch out for the angriest striker in the Premier League, Ireland frontman Robbie Keane, when they face Spurs.
For those new to our score predictions game, you get one point for getting the right result, but make that five points if you get the score exactly right. Pit your wits against us here at the Reuters Soccer Blog panel and just see how quickly you overtake us. Here’s the state of play at the moment.
Reuters Soccer Blog panel: Patrick Johnston 117, Paul Radford 102, Mitch Phillips 93, Mike Collett 88, Miles Evans 86, Simon Evans 85, Kevin Fylan 78, Mark Meadows 77, Julien Pretot 74, Neil Maidment 67, Asia Sports Desk 55, Justin Palmer 38, Martyn Herman 28, Sonia Oxley 26
